I use IE for one or two sites that don't work well on Netscape. Yesterday I suddenly started getting lots of popups and popunders on IE, and a friend suggested that it was an adware problem. Also, for the last couple of months my computer has been running more slowly than it should. I use XP, and am on ADSL. I downloaded and ran "Hijack This", and will paste my log below. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Hello suhaila ,welcome to the forum.

Important: Do this before any fix.

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

The reason we do this is Hijackthis creates backup files just in case you'd need to restore one and we'll be cleaning out the temp files.

After the above:

This is what I suggest you do.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
CWShredder didn't find anything. I tried to run the online scan from TrendMicro HouseCall via Netscape, but couldn't get it to work. I ended up running it through IE and no known viruses were detected. There were three possible viruses/non-cleanable that are listed below: Possible Virus \ Non Cleanable \ E:\Temp\atiupdate.exe Possible Virus \ Non Cleanable \ K:\WINDOWS\system32\msshed32.exe Possible Virus \ Non Cleanable \ K:\System Volume Information\_restore{60231E79-9666-42C6-835D-96A9DFD26069}\RP480\A0027999.exe I've noticed something unusual, and don't know if it has anything to do with the problems I'm having, but will post it just in case. I sometimes have programs show up on my "recently used" list (found on XP by pressing "start", and the list is on the bottom left of that menu…in case I'm calling it the wrong thing). There is one item that sometimes pops up there, and is a file that I haven't opened in at least 6 months. That shortcut is: K:\WINDOWS\system32\Notepad.exe d:\PROGRA~1\Torpor\SILICO~1\HOWTOA~1.TXT This is a directions file for a program that I haven't used in awhile. Should I delete it? Also, "Paint" was on that list this morning, but wasn't yesterday. I haven't opened that program in more than a week, if then. The exact shortcut is: %SystemRoot%\System32\mspaint.exe Neither program shortcut was on the list prior to the onslaught of popups/popunders two days ago. I'll continue with the other directions you gave me, and will report back. Thanks so much for your help. You can be assured that a donation will be on the way if you can get me through these problems! :)
Finished. Here's the log:

Still getting popups/popunders on IE. I've noticed that there are some sites on which I'm not getting any popups/popunders, and that those site have no advertising on their sites. The barage seems to occur only on the sites with ads.
I suggest you do this:

Open Spybot S&D, click Mode>Advanced>Tools>Resident and remove the check from the Tea Timer box. You can reinstate it later but we don't want it interfering with what we need to do. Reboot when done.

Run HijackThis again and put a check by these.

Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Search for and delete these files if listed:
A0027999.exe
K:\WINDOWS\System32\xpbwc.exe
K:\WINDOWS\system32\msshed32.exe
E:\Temp\atiupdate.exe

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

I opened IE, reset my homepage and surfed around the sites that I was having the most popups/popunders, and they're gone! Thank you so very much!!!

I do have one question about your directions. You said:

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

NOTE you need to do these for ALL listed drives: Like C: E: K: etc.

What do you mean by "Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS"?

What do you mean by "Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS"?

We can do it this way.

Do this for ALL drives you have.
1. Open My Computer
2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files (If listed)
7. Click OK and windows will comply.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
