help would be greatly appreciated. i've tried using Ad-Aware but that doesnt seem to be able to get rid of them. I've tried getting things changed over to Netscape as my browser and stopped using IE, it seemed to slow them down for a bit but not fully stop them.

here's my log:

Hi milk! I'm 'KotaGuy. Welcome to TomCoyote!

If you still require assistance, could you please post a new HijackThis log. It has been a few days since you've posted and something might have changed since then.

Before you do, I'd like you to do some scans. Please do scans at Panda ActiveScan and TrendMicro HouseCall. Let them fix anything they find. Reboot between each scan.

Next, download and install Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D. Visit this page for proper configuration. Update both programs. Run and scan with both, letting them fix whatever they find. Remember to reboot between each scan.

Once you have done the scans, post a new HijackThis log please.

Thanks!
Thank you, 'KotaGuy for the help!

okay, i followed all your directions with these results: panda active scan gave me 182 errors; 45 on HouseCall; 249 on AdAware; and 0 on SpyBot.

here is my newly updated log:

2. Tap the F8 button as your computer is booting to bring you to an Advanced Options Menu.
3. Select Safe Mode and press Enter.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly — this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Run and scan with HijackThis. With all other browsers and windows closed, place a check beside the following and Fix:

well, i've done as best i could with your follow-up instructions however there were a few proplems:

The Ewido logfile– i think i messed up, because the only reports i was able to make a log of were: the PRocess report and a Startup report. I dont think they were what you intended for me to save. Sorry.

After i did a Run and Scan with HijackThis, i wasnt able to place a check by the following items because they weren't listed:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ricimq] c:\windows\system32\cfigsv.exe r

and

O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

As for searching for and deleting these files:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\voah.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\cfigsv.exe

i couldnt find them to delete them, however i did find the third one you had listed.

upon restarting in normal mode, Ewido found an infected file:
mkctup.exe
C:\Windows\System32
SPyware.BitterInternet

i cleaned that and then rebooted once again and here is the new log:

Thanks for the help, if there is anything i have to redo, please let me know.

milk
Well, I am extremely happy to report that my computer seems to be mine again and not held hostage to the popups and browser takeovers *g* Startup seems to be a bit faster for everything except YIM, but that really doesnt bother me too much. Now, the programs i downloaded– will they continue to help me stay popup/cookie free as i am right now? Thank you so much, 'KotaGuy for all the work and help you'v given me. milk
Good to hear! Glad I was able to help!

The programs I have had you download will help prevent infection. I cannot guarantee you will never be infected again, however. All I can do is make suggestions to help minimize the chance.

The Ewido Suite is a trial version… as such when the trial ends you should either uninstall it or pay for it.

Now that your computer is clean, its a good time to reset your System Restore point. This will ensure a clean backup to fall upon if you ever need it. To do this:
  • Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
Reboot your computer, follow the steps above, this time unchecking the "Turn off System Restore" and reboot.

I recommend downloading and installing SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE-SPYAD as well. You can get them from the links in my sig. The programs are free and can be updated… so please do so. Installing these will go a long way in preventing reinfection.

If you don't have one, I recommend installing a Firewall. I'm sure you've heard of ZoneAlarm.

Check out the links in my sig named How'd I get Infected and Understanding Spyware as well, some good information for you.

You should update XP to SP2 now that we got your computer clean. It will close a lot of security holes.

Other than that, remember to update Windows frequently, update your protection programs, scan often and…
