Please help analyze this Hijackthis Log. I have been experienceing numerous pop-ups many of those after my computer has been on for 15 minutes or so. I have disabled my internet connect connection to see if that would stop it and then I get a pop-up of IE looking for "http://Ads.deskwizz.com - cannot find server". I have Adaware SE Personal, Spybot, Spyblaster and Microsoft AntiSpyware (Beta version), all have helped some but the pop-ups keep coming back.

Hello once again DGSmith, I will see what I can do for you in your log.

1) Please tell me if this is valid: C:\WINDOWS\system\nfkx.exe
I get this when I check it
http://www.jonna-ras...0753&width=1600
I can't proceed with this one until you let me know if it is valid or not.

2) You have a lot of clutter left my MSN Search and emachines I would like to remove. I will leave the good search which is Google. If you wish to keep the clutter, just don't check them in HJT.

3) This appears to be a problem:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [muqhumw] c:\windows\system32\muqhumw.exe
Information is scarce and when it is located it is removed at other forums. I suggest it is a random named trojan and unless your know what it is, we will remove it.

4) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AUNPS2] RUNDLL32 AUNPS2.DLL,_Run@16 Same as above, everywhere it appears in a log it is being removed.

5) I can see no reason why you have to look at an emachine startpage:
O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://www.emachines.com
unless you enjoy it, and I will remove that also.

6) Please see what CastleCops has to say about this item, you can correct that in MSCONFIG or Add Remove Programs if you wish:
C:\Program Files\BigFix\BigFix.exe
http://castlecops.co...uplist-400.html

7) SCAN with HijackThis and check the box in front of each line item:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://ie.search.msn.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.emachines.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.microsoft...=ie&ar=iesearch
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://ie.search.msn...st/srchasst.htm
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,CustomizeSearch = http://ie.search.msn...st/srchcust.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.microsoft...B_PVER}&ar=home
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [muqhumw] c:\windows\system32\muqhumw.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AUNPS2] RUNDLL32 AUNPS2.DLL,_Run@16
O8 - Extra context menu item: &AIM Search - res://C:\Program Files\AIM Toolbar\AIMBar.dll/aimsearch.htm
O9 - Extra button: AIM - {AC9E2541-2814-11d5-BC6D-00B0D0A1DE45} - C:\Program Files\aim\aim.exe
O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://www.emachines.com

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows then click "Fix Checked"

Follow the instructions in the following link to enable hidden files for your operating system.
You may wish to reverse this process if you have any concern about anyone getting into these hidden system files.
http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html

RIGHT click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete this file:

c:\windows\system32\muqhumw.exe >>> file

I suggest you look at this utility to clean for you: http://www.ccleaner.com/

Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer. Stay in this thread, post a new log along with your comments and any information that I requested.

Thanks...pskelley

pskelly,

I have copleted your recommendations as you stated above with one exception. I was not sure about removing or disabling the Bigfix.exe program, I know Emachines uses this to send their upates occassionally. I wasn't sure about using MSCONFIG to remove it from the start-up window. I will do what you think is best. The other question you had was concerning the program nfkx.exe, that was removed by AVG virus checker, it was tagged as a Trojan Horse downloader.small.26.Bl virus. I believe I have fixed all the HijackThis items that you identified. I have also remove the Spyware Nuker and Spyware doctor programs as they wanted to charge for their programs.
I have run another Hijackthis log please analyze it as I am still getting a couple of pop-ups every 4-8 minutes, not near as bad as before. Thanks again very much for your help.

David

OK David, let's see where we are. I will try to answer your questions first:

I wasn't sure about using MSCONFIG to remove it from the start-up window.

The good news is it's your computer you get to do what you want. The bad news is the item is a resource waster but if you have plenty of resources why worry about it. I think you owe it to your self to read a little more. Open http://www.google.com/ and type BigFix.exe into the search to see what is said about the program. My suggestion is that you review this information: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/ and at the very least considering unchecking it in MSCONFIG and running it manually when you think you need to. If it creates a problem, which I do not think it will, you can always recheck it,

The other question you had was concerning the program nfkx.exe, that was removed by AVG virus checker, it was tagged as a Trojan Horse downloader.small.26.Bl virus.

This item was still showing in the first log you posted for me:
C:\WINDOWS\system\nfkx.exe so I assume you ran the AV program after you posted the log.

This is an old line left when your removed SpywareDoctor, use HJT to check and fix it.

Use this information to remove temp files and Prefetch files, follow the directions carefully:
http://www.personal-...ngtempfiles.htm
http://techrepublic....70-5165773.html

This is a good free utility to clean for you: http://www.ccleaner.com/

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

http://russelltexas....re/allclear.htm
http://forum.malware...wtopic.php?t=14

StayClean: I suggest the following free software, links contain the tutorial and download site:
Spybot
http://www.bleepingc...tutorial43.html
Ad-aware
http://www.bleepingc...tutorial48.html
SpywareBlaster
http://www.bleepingc...tutorial49.html
SpywareGuard:
http://www.bleepingc...tutorial50.html
IE-Spyad
http://www.bleepingc...tutorial53.html

Purge system restore file: when everything else is done, follow the link instruction to make sure nothing bad is hiding in System Restore that could get back on the computer if you had to use it.
http://service1.syma...src=sec_doc_nam

David, Your log is clean and I can see nothing that should be causing these popups. Perhaps the cleanout of temp junk will help. I run the same Google toolbar, are you sure you have it configured to block popups?
Look for options for the toolbar on the same line as the word GOOGLE to the right. Make sure you have the blocker activated. I also get a few popups, but my blocker stops the large majority of them. If you have any questions once I post this, let me know, I will leave the post open for a couple of days.

Thanks...pskelley (Clearwater, Florida)
