Uncontrollable Ad Pop-ups

This is my first post to any forum, so bear with me if I make any mistakes.

I am trying to help a friend clear his PC of unwanted ad pop-ups. The pop-ups are occurring so frequently that it interferes with any downloads we attempt. He had been using a 56 kb modem to connect to the Internet via MSN.com. We tried to update his forms for TurboTax and the pop-ups made the download times unbearable.

I finally brought his PC to my house and connected it to my cable modem. The ad pop-ups are occurring faster than I can close them. I haven't been able to install any updates to his OS, which is Windows XP Home Edition because of the problem.

I have run Adaware and Spybot Search & Destroy in an attempt to clean up the system. Each time I run the applications, they find more offending files, which are deleted. Some files are unable to be deleted because they remain resident in memory. I have run Norton Anti-Virus and it has cleaned up some viruses. The PC seems to infest itself each time I connect to the Internet.

I have read posts from other people and feel I have come to the right place. I'm sure I can clean up this machine with your help. Thank you in advance.

Hello Mike , Welcome to the forum.

Important: Do this before any fix.

You need to update your version of HijackThis. Open HJT> Config> Misc Tools> Check for update online. If that doesn't work, download it from my signature and remove the hijackThis.exe you have now.

Also please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

After the above:

This is what I suggest you do.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thank you for the quick reply.

I did as you asked and here are the results:

1. CWShredder didn't find anything.
2. The online virus scanner found 13 viruses and was able to delete 12 of them. The only one it couldn't delete was MediaAccess.exe (Win32.SillyOfHZ)
3. Spybot S&D found 20 problems, fixed 12, and 8 remained in memory.
4. Adaware was able to delete all the files it found except for C:\Program Files\istxvc\istsvc.exe

Regards,
Mike

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Do I call you LD or LDTate? :)

I completed the tasks you had set for me and so far the PC seems to be acting pretty good. No Ad pop-ups so far. I've been connected to the Internet for a couple minutes, but that was all it took before ads started popping up before.

If it remains stable, the next step is to make sure the OS and Internet Explorer have the latest patches.

Mike

LD,

I think I was a step ahead of you because I was doing some rechecking and I found the ELITECLR32 running again. I either missed it the first time or the PC loaded it from somewhere else.

Either way, I did as you suggested and didn't find anything regarding the ELITECLR32.exe file because I had already deleted it. I did delete the SLSERVE.exe file.

I have a question though… I did a search on ELITECLR32.exe and found one in the \WINDOWS\PREFETCH folder. The file was prefixed with a couple numbers and a file extension of .PF. There were also ELITERDM32.exe, ELITEsah.exe, ELITEvot32.exe, and ELITEvxk32.exe. These were in the \PREFETCH folder only. I went ahead and deleted them.

I also found, in the \PREFETCH folder, the MSDATLST. MSPRCSS32, MEDIAACCK, and MediaAccess files. Should these be deleted as well?

Regards,
Mike

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
LD, Thank you for all your help. I really appreciate it and I know my friend thanks you too. Me more than anyone because I can give his PC back to him. :) I will download the files you suggested and let my friend know what he has to do. Thank you again. Regards, Mike
