Hi-
I've been on a self help mission getting rid of a sudden spate of popups and spyware on my computer including "desktop.exe", "isrvs", etc. My methods were to run AdAware SE and Spybot and Symantech antivirus. Then I discovered Hijack This and read some of the forums and found problems similar to mine and followed the instructions which seemed to work (although I may have removed something I shouldn't have removed…how to know?

In any case I still get a message that says something like "can't run ofoto" which is a program I deleted from my computer but it still seems to be in the start-up routine somehow (how can I remove this?).

I'd appreciate it if someone could look at my latest Hijack This log and tell me if I should remove something else or if there is something that SHOULD be running that isn't.

Also I'd appreciate any advice on how to prevent infections in the future (given that I have a 16 year old who plays SIMS on this computer and apparantly needs "administrator rights" to run the game?

Finally, when I run microsoft's "Baseline Security Analyzer" it shows an account with administrative priveledges titled "S-1-5-21-1497286466…" that doesn't show up on the oppenning XP login screen. There was another account that showed up too but I seem to have gotten rid of that. Does spyware have the ability to create new hidden accounts?

Anyway I hope this is all appropriate for this forum and appologize if it isn't.

Thanks in advance for your help–

Dick

Hey Shelf:

Thanks for your help. I used HJT to delete the five items you mentioned and ran three of the scans. The Symantec scan showed the computer relatively safe in its connection to the internet (all areas green) but it found a bunch of viruses. The Panda scan found about 56 viruses but I couldn't find a log. Below is the log from
Microworld and Symantec:

Since the Symantec showed the computer relatively safe I assume these viruses are behing downloaded. Norton anti-virus seems to let them through. I also have
Spy-bot and AdAware on hear. Any suggestions? (I'll bet a lot of the trouble is teenagers downloading music. Any suggestions on how to prevent them downloading viruses or spyware inadvertantly also?

Thanks for your help,

Dick
hi carnwathd,

i would print this out or copy it to a text file somewhere so you can follow it as we will be in safe mode:
make sure all files are set to show:

FOr XP: on the desktop double click my computer,go to tools>folder options>view> then select "show hidden files and folders", then UNcheck "hide protected operating system files " also UNcheck "hide extensions for known file types" click apply to all folders, apply then ok

looking better. look in add/remove programs panel and uninstall POP! if its present, in the event that you registered with them do this before uninstalling:

If you registered with People OnPage, you'll need to unregister before removing People OnPage.

To unregister, sign in to POP! with the email address and password of the profile you are unregistering. Click the Controls button on the POPBAR and choose My Account from the menu that displays. When the My Account page opens, click the Registration Information link. When the Change Registration page opens, click the Unregister from POP! link. When the Unregistration page opens, enter your email address and password and choose whether you want to unregister from POP! Dating or from POP! Completely, then click the Unregister button.

ok now boot computer into safe mode by tapping the F8 key at restart, chose hte safe mode option from the list. may take couple minutes to get to safe mode desktop- ok once in safe mode:

delete the entire folder>>AutoUpdate>>located here>C:\Program Files

delete these two files only>>cdmrprof.exe and >>chac16gt.exe both are located>>C:\WINDOWS\system32
———————————————
ok still in safe mode do this:

Click Start>Run then type %temp%
Hit OK. Delete all the files you can.

Empty your Temp folders. Go to Start > Run and type:cleanmgr. Windows will scan. When done check these 3 and press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin
———————————————
next do this:

using explorer(right click on start>explore) drill down to these >>> you want to delete whats >inside< the folder, not the folder itself<<

C:\Windows\Temp\

C:\Documents and Settings\-Your Profile-\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ (will dump all your cached internet content including cookies)

C:\Documents and Settings\-Your Profile-\Local Settings\Temp\

C:\Documents and Settings\-Any other users Profile-\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\

C:\Documents and Settings\-Any other users Profile-\Local Settings\Temp\

after the above reboot computer normally, and run hjt and post a new hjt log.

downloading music can be safe. some file sharing programs can install garbage you probably dont want (but so do lots of other programs)you can also download carp** from these networks (trojans etc)i dont see any file sharing programs on your computer
do you keep your norton av updated with the latest files?
do you know you have a keystroke logger on there?

krec32.exe>> see this link:

http://castlecops.com/startuplist-1804.html
Hi Shelf-

A couple of comments first, then the HJT log:

There was no People OnPage file to delete. Since I never heard of People OnPage I don't have a user name or password to get off it. (It may be that one of the teenagers who use this computer signed on and then removed the program).

I deleted all the stuff you suggested except "O16 - DPF: {E06E2E99-0AA1-11D4-ABA6-0060082AA75C} (GpcContainer Class) - https://altegris.webex.com/client/v_mywebex...atgpc.cab"

which is related to a company I do business with called Altegris. I've communicated with them using WebEx and I assume this is part of that program. Since I may do this in the future I left it on there. Is that OK or are you of the opinion I should deep six it?

I had some trouble getting in Safe Mode until I disconnected a USB hub I have to connect my external hard drive, printer and ipod. For whatever reason tapping F8 didn't work until I pulled the plug. I only have two USB ports on the back of the computer (1.0).

There were no files cdmrprof.exe and chac16gt.exe in c:WINDOWS\system32.

Cleaned out all the temporary files as you said.

Using Explorer I deleted all the files WITHIN Local Settings \ Temp and Temporary Internet Files. This was a little scary as they contained the following items which I don't know what they are:

desktop.ini which was identified as a "system file",

and in several cases files with the following names:
CPQRSD6V
M1365MFP
N25FAIRO
O1GLZNS1

I have no idea what those are.

As to KREC 32–I admit to putting this distasteful program on here for reasons I won't go into. I no longer use it, but if the People OnPage keeps showing up maybe I'll use it to find out "my" username and password.

Finally, I ran a program from Microsoft called "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer\mbsa.exe". This listed foour Administrators on the system:

Administrator
Playtime (which is the kids account)
Richard Carnwath (which is my account)
S-1-5-21-1497286466-255218965-2221179514-1003

The Administrator account is never used. Should I delete it as I use my accont for administration?

The Playtime account has Administrator status so the kids can play SIMS 2 which apparantly doesn't work in restricted mode. Maybe this will work in "Limited" mode?

The last one, " s-1-5…is a total mystery. I have no idea what this is. But a few weeks ago another account showed up with some more normal name that I never heard of. I deleted that entire account and it never showed up again. Is this strange account supposed to be here?

Here's the HJT log:

hi carnwathd,

good work, last hjt looks good.

some comments;

[AutoUpdater] "C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate\AutoUpdate.exe—this item must not have been POP! since it wasnt in the add/remove programs panel. in any case it was probably some other malware, but its gone now.

that 016 item–(GpcContainer Class) - https://altegris.webex.com/client/v_mywebex...gpc.cab"-- i wasnt sure about, but if hjt fixed it, you would have been prompted at the website to install it again.

all the stuff in Local Settings \ Temp and Temporary Internet Files can be deleted, in normal mode you probably couldnt delete everything, folders will be created on reboot

iam not that familiar with xp and accounts.
i found some links on the subject:

if things are ok, for reference:

Please follow a few tips to remain malware free:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
occasionaly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

Also download, install and keep updated- Antivirus Software (and use only one):
Free for home users:
avast! 4 Home Edition Download
AVG free version 7.0 AVG free version v6.0 updates ended 12/31/04
AntiVir Personal Edition

Adjust your browser settings: Change your(active x) settings in IE. With IE open go to tools, internet options, security tab. Click on the internet globe, then custom level. Set the first option "download signed active x controls" to prompt, the next two to disable. Read more:
Internet Explorer Privacy & Security Settings
Working with Internet Explorer 6 Security
Many exploits are directed at Internet Explorer, you dont have to use it. Try a different browser:
Like Firefox,
And Pegasus Mail for a safer e-mail client.

Install a firewall. A firewall will control what comes in from the internet and what leaves your computer to the internet. A firewall will also alert you when a application trys to connect to the internet from your computer, this is a good way to catch crapware or trojans, trying to connect out bound from your computer- whats that and why does it need a internet connection? You can deny it access it until more investigation is done. Zone Alarm is a free and easy to use firewall, that will provide in and outbound protection. Microsoft XP firewall only provides inbound protection. SP2 adds in and out bound protection which is better than nothing, but is not as robust as third party firewalls, Be sure to run only >one< firewall. If you use another, be sure to disable XP's built in firewall. A inexpensive NAT hardware router with SPI (firewall)would be even better, along with a software firewall.
Zone Alarm
Kerio Personal Firewall
Outpost Firewall
Sygate Personal Firewall

Download, install and update before using:(if these are constantly finding malware, then you need to make some changes)
Ad-Aware SE Personal edition
Spybot Search and destroy
Becarful with spyware "removers and scanners"– there are many "rogue/suspect" programs that "claim to remove" spyware.

Other programs to consider:
SpywareBlaster
IE-SPYAD
AntiTrojan software to fill in the gap:
a2 free
Ewido Security Suite
Trojan Hunter (30 day trial version)

Watch what you download, and where you download it from. Many programs come bundled with "extra" crapware you may not want. Make sure you know what it is you will be downloading and installing. Visit the makers website, learn more about the program, Does the program you want come bundled with other "3rd party" programs? What do the 3rd party programs do? Will they deliver ads? Track your surfing habits?.You may be installing more than you think, Read the EULA agreement, you know that paragraph of stuff you "agree to" before the software installs? Stay away from warez and crack sites. Becarful what you download from file sharing networks. If you are not sure, scan it with your Antivirus app. A small file (in KB) is probably not what you think it is. Some p2p clients also install 3rd party stuff you probably dont want. If you search hard enough you can usually find a "clean" alternative to any software.

shelf life
Shelf- Hi again. Thanks for all your help. I have upgraded my virus protection from Norton Anti-Virus 2003 (with current definitions) to Xymantec SystemWorks 2005 which includes a firewall. I figured the XP Firewall was OK but apparantly not so. Will this suffice for the programs you listed in your last post? I know Symantec is big but are they good? I ran a virus scan with the new version and found the following: Norton AntiVirus Quarantine Report Created: Thursday, April 07, 2005 11:57:58 AM —————————————————————————— File Name Location Status Size Virus Name User Name Machine Name Domain Date Quarantined Date Submitted —————————————————————————— Buddy.exe C:\WINDOWS Backup of a deleted Security Risk 152 KB Adware.BetterInternet Richard Carnwath DGRRQ811 MSHOME Thursday, April 07, 2005 9:51:37 AM Not submitted —————————————————————————— ceres.dll C:\WINDOWS Backup of a deleted Security Risk 320 KB Adware.BetterInternet Richard Carnwath DGRRQ811 MSHOME Thursday, April 07, 2005 9:51:40 AM Not submitted —————————————————————————— ph.exe C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-1497286466-2552189465-2221179514-1007\Dc2154 Backup of a deleted Security Risk 100 KB Adware.Envolo Richard Carnwath DGRRQ811 MSHOME Thursday, April 07, 2005 9:51:43 AM Not submitted —————————————————————————— backup-20050405-092815-117.dll C:\Documents and Settings\Richard Carnwath\My Documents\Downloads\hijackthis\backups Backup of a deleted Security Risk 88.0 KB Adware.Envolo Richard Carnwath DGRRQ811 MSHOME Thursday, April 07, 2005 9:51:37 AM Not submitted These are all in the "backup copy" folder so they are not doing anything to me, but you will notice the file c:\RECYCLER mentioned a couple times. This is an unknown file to me except that it is huge: 379 MB. It also has the same long number attached to it as the mystery "Administrator" account. I can't delete the file as it contains subfolders like "Dc357" that say "accesss denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use" I tried the following that I got to from one of the web pages you suggested (apparantly other people want to get rid of this file too) This is from XPFORUM in the UK from a guy named "brian" posted on April 19, 2004: Go to START, RUN enter CMD press control-alt-del stop "explorer.exe" Go back to the DOS commands and navigate to the C:\ Directory Delete the file Turn "explorer.exe back on However, when I do all that the file doesn't show up in the c:\DIR as it does when I use the Windows Explore button from right clicking the START button. In other words I can't delete RECYCLER yet that is the location of one of these adware things. Any ideas? What is this file and what is the relation to the hidden Administrator Account? Thanks, Dick
hi carnwathd, not familiar with Symantec systemworks 2005. iam sure its av is good. the important thing is to check for updates manually afew times per week or configure the software to do it automatically for you. c:RECYCLER is your recycle bin. make sure its empty for each user account, (from the desktop icon) is anything protecting it from being emptied? do the icons show it empty.
Shelf- It turns out the Norton (Symantec) product was protecting them. I managed to get most of the stuff erased. I'll poke around in the Microsoft or XP forums on the strange "Administrator" question. Right now my spyware-trojan problems are solved thaks to your help. Thanks a lot. Dick Over and out (I hope!)
