I've got some awful spyware plauging my computer. After a while it will forget all subtelty and go into such a massive plethora of ads that I'm forced to restart. A website with the name 'banners' comes up a lot along with the classics we know and hate.

Hello Lunatic. :wavey:

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.

Step 1
Reboot the computer into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').

Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

O2 - BHO: ohb - {4D568F0F-8AC9-40AB-88B7-415134C78777} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: ohb - {999A06FF-10EF-4A29-8640-69E99882C26B} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\rtneg.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdtl] C:\WINDOWS\System32\winupdt.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinTask driver] C:\WINDOWS\system32\wintask.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msmc] C:\WINDOWS\system32\msmc.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [etbrun] C:\windows\system32\elitensf32.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [sysmonnt] C:\WINDOWS\System32\sysmonnt

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 3
Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove the following items (if found):

mscman

Step 4
Please set your computer to show all files.

* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 5
Please delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\winupdt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wintask.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msmc.exe
C:\windows\system32\elitensf32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\sysmonnt
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wwkror.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system\xdjkhu.exe

Step 6
Reboot normally. I see no signs of a Firewall or Antivirus program on your computer. I recommend downloading and installing the following free programs: ZoneAlarm Firewall and AVG7 Antivirus. Be sure to check for updates after installation.

Step 7
Scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread. Be sure that no items are unchecked with Msconfig or a startup manager.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Thanks for the detailed instructions. Here's the new log:

I installed the programs you reccommended, and so far everything seems fine. I'll reply to this post if anything turns up.

Once again, you have my thanks. On an internet of such corrupt buisness practices, you truely are saints. You can expect donations from me in the future- in fact, hold me to it.
Still have two bad items in the running process.

Click on this link http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip to download Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit. Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it.
In the 'Paste Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste this entry:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wwkror.exe

Check the option for "Delete on Reboot". Click the button with the red circle with a
white X in it. Click 'yes'. When asked to reboot choose 'no'.

In the 'Paste Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste this entry:
C:\WINDOWS\system\xdjkhu.exe

Click the button with the red circle with a
white X in it. Click 'yes'. When asked to reboot choose 'yes'.

After the computer reboots, scan with HijackThis and post the new log as a reply to this thread.

When I used Killbox, it said the file had already been removed by another process. This is probably because I ran AVG like you reccommended, and it removed a few more things. Thanks for helping.
Your new log is clean.:)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the Performance tab, click File System, or press ALT+F.
3. On the Troubleshooting tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
4. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 3, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

Here are three very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3
AdAware SE v1.05
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE
A2 Squared

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
