Fixing a friends computer just completely loaded down with spyware and a whole lot of junk. I think I got rid of most but some just seem to come right back. Here is my HJT log. Thanks in advance.

Hi fdrn,

Welcome to TomCoyote Forums. It would help if you did not post identical logs in several threads. We have people who wait patiently for days for one of our helpers to get to their logs, and such multiple postings give the appearance that you are trying to push to the front of the queue. Many of our people will pass over such postings, so it's really counterproductive.

That said, let's see what we can do to help relieve your friend's problem.

Download this: http://www.downloads.subratam.org/VX2Finder.exe and run it

1-Click on "Click To find Find VX2.Abetterinternet"

2-Delete all files found. You will get a message about "cannot delete this one" matching the same name in the Guardian Key.

3-Click "Open regedit" will take you right to the Guardian Key (no need to search for it)

4-Highlight "Guardian", RightClick and choose "Security/permissions"; you'll get another window with "advanced"…
DESELECT (UNCHECK) the lower box with "Inheritable Permissions"
Press "OK" and then "REMOVE" on the following security prompts.

REBOOT computer.

5-On restart use VX2Finder again, select + delete the last file, click "User Agent$" will remove that entry from the registry.

6-Click "Open regedit" again; this time RESTORE the check in "Inheritable Permissions"

7-Click "Guardian.reg" in VX2Finder; this DELETES the Guardian Key.

8-Use "Find" again; this time it should produce a clean log of blank values.

9-Click "Restore Policy" to restore the Debug policy that was altered by the malware app.

Now, run HijackThis. CLOSE YOUR BROWSER AND ALL WINDOWS EXCEPT THE ONE IT'S RUNNING IN, and put a check in the box at the left end of ONLY the lines below. Then click on FIX CHECKED and let it run.

When the program finishes, reboot and post a fresh log so we can see what else may be needed.
I'm sorry for the multiple posts, When I posted the first one the web browser hung and I had to shut it down to get out of it. I wasn't sure the first post was sent. My bad. I'll try all the fixes you posted on Friday. To be honest I wasn't expecting such a fast reply. I'm impressed, and thankful. I'll get on it as early as I can Friday. Talk to ya then.
Ok, I did all that and here is my HJT log now. Thanks again for the help.

Marc

As you can see I've added some extra protection. I hope I didn't jump the gun.
Hi fdrn,

Man, that log looks a LOT BETTER. GOOD WORK! CONGRATULATIONS! It's clean.

Now that it's clean, the trick is to KEEP IT THAT WAY. Here are a few suggestions; they're painless, I assure you. (By the way, you DID NOT jump the gun on improving security.)

First, KEEP YOUR WINDOWS AND BROWSER UPDATED. As new security problems are found, Microsoft issues UPDATES to plug the holes that have been found. The top entry on your START menu should be "Windows Update," so this one is as easy as falling off a log.

Next, I recommend installing SpywareBlaster. It "inoculates" your computer against literally THOUSANDS of known malware items, and it works in such a way that it DOES NOT need to be running (and consuming system resources) to protect you. The program sets a "Kill-Bit" for each malware item, and then that thing can't download to your computer, or run if it's there. I don't know just how it works, but I can assure you IT DOES! Once the protection is set, all you have to do is check for updates about once a week, install them and run SB to set protection against the new items on the list. Once a Kill-Bit is set, you have PERMANENT protection from that item unless you remove it. Best of all, this is FREEWARE. Follow this link to download it: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

For a good overview of basic Internet security, this is a good article: http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957 If I can leave you with one thought, it's this: Security is NOT a destination, it's an endless journey.
