Mornin' all

My PC has become infected with spyware and odd windows keep opening. I've run Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D and removed a few odds and ends, but can't seem to remove the main problem. :rant2:

Hello blu-tac man, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. If you still need help please follow these directions.

1) Go here: http://www.malwareremoval.com/downloads.html and download the newest version 1.99.1, I want you to use this version for the repair.

2) Please download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Take the time to review the instructions on the download page so that when I ask you to run it you will know what you are doing.

3) Open Hijack this and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser window, then click on "Fix Checked"

SHOW HIDDEN FILES: Follow the instructions in the follow link to enable hidden files for your operating system.
You may wish to reverse this process if you have any concern about anyone getting into these hidden system files.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT click on Start then click on Explore, locate and delete this file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ap9h4qmo.exe >>> file

Run CCleaner then restart the computer and post a new log along with any feedback you have.

A thousand thanks pskelley - I think I'm now clear! :D

Unable to download Hijackthis 1.99.1 from anywhere, as all downloads appeared to be infected by w32/Generic.worm!p2p (or at least that's what my McAfee antivirus said each time I tried!).

But I deleted the lines you suggested (although I couldn't find the ap9h4qmo.exe file - just one called ap9h4qmo.ini which I left), and then ran CCleaner, and on re-boot my PC appears to be clear. I've just taken another Hijack this log, and it's below. If you see anything else nasty, please let me know.

Many thanks once again

blu-tac

Hello blu-tac, The issue below occured because McAfee was seeing something in our script as malware and I also had the same issue. I must tell you that this was fixed by McAfee months ago, you should update the McAfee software. If once you have updated you still can't download HJT 1.99.1, I suggest you contact McAfee for instructions as they are well aware of this.

Unable to download Hijackthis 1.99.1 from anywhere, as all downloads appeared to be infected by w32/Generic.worm!p2p (or at least that's what my McAfee antivirus said each time I tried!).

Your log appears clean, I would appreciate an opportunity to look at a new log once you update as it does show a couple of areas I can't see with this version. I will leave this thread open for a few days and as soon as you have successfully updated please post a new log.

This item is explained in the link below it and does not show in the log. I would do a search for the .exe and delete any instance of it you find.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ap9h4qmo.exe

As a final check, please run this free online scan. If it should locate anything, especially if it finds something it can't remove please post with the exact name and location of the item. You may be asked to allow ActiveX, please do so as it can't run without it.

Since the log is clean, here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

It is always a good idea to purge the System Restore points after an infection since if something got into that area it could reinfect you if you had to use SR for a legitimate reason. Please use the information in the following link to do this:
