I removed Brutus-v1-b2 with CounterSpy which deleted 5 registry keys, but it returns every time I reboot. Is there any way to get rid of this spyware? Thanks

Hmm, according to what counter spy says, this is a password hijacker

So, if possible, dont connect to the computer with the infected machine.

do the following:
1. Click on start (located on the lower left hand corner of your screen)
2. Click on My Computer
3. double click on c:
4. find the folder called "Program files" and double click that folder
5.In the program files folder, click the file menu, then click new->folder
6.Name the folder HJT
7.Look below to my signature :weee: Click on the link named "hijack this"
8. If it asks you if you want to run, save, or cancel the file click save
9. Browse to this location: c:/program files/HJT and save the file there
10. When the download is complete, go to c:/program files/hjt and extract the folder.
11.delete the zipped folder. You will not need it anymore.

When that is done, run Hijack This and post a new log by replying to this log. Please do not post your response in a different thread.

Good luck,
wng

Hi, Before we fix with HijackThis, we need to disable AdWatch, because this may interfere with the fix. (You can re-enable it later) To do this: In Ad-aware, go to the Settings area (the gear). Then click the Ad-watch button. The "Load Ad-watch on Windows start up" option controls if Ad-watch launches at start up or not. A green check means Ad-watch will load on Windows start up. A red X means Ad-watch will not load automatically. To toggle between these two settings, click the red X or the green check to switch to its opposite. Then click the Proceed button to save your settings. Reboot. ----------------------------------- Now, open HijackThis, click the "Scan" button, and check the following items: R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Stationery\blank.htm R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Stationery\blank.htm O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SystemTray] SysTray.Exe If you or your administrator did not put this restriction on Control Panel, also check this item. These restrictions can also be set by software like Spybot Search & Destroy, SpywareBlaster or another similar protection software: O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present Close all windows except HijackThis, and click the "Fix Checked" button. Click Start --> Find. Find the following file and delete it: SysTray.Exe Reboot and post a new log. dk

Thank you dk. Here is a new log. But I think I killed the beast in my own weird way. I was suspicious of one of the program I downloaded recently, which is Authentium's ESP (and it is not free, mind you). Since I had uninstalled it, I have not seen Brutus any more. Another possibility is a System32 file Cswsk32.ocx, than was mentioned in one of the Brutus' registry keys. I did both things simultaneously and do not know which one worked. Or maybe it is simply my luck. Any way, files that you mentioned in HijackThis did existed and I fixed them as you suggested and here we go: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.0 Scan saved at 9:27:12 PM, on 3/13/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccProxy.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\ISSVC.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SPBBC\SPBBCSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\EPSON\EBAPI\SAgent2.exe C:\Program Files\Roxio\GoBack\GBPoll.exe C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton Utilities\NPROTECT.EXE C:\Program Files\CheckPoint\SecuRemote\bin\SR_Service.exe C:\Program Files\CheckPoint\SecuRemote\bin\SR_WatchDog.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe C:\Program Files\CheckPoint\SecuRemote\bin\SR_GUI.Exe C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\OmniPagePro12.0\Opware12.exe C:\HP\KBD\KBD.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\ACDSYS~1\DEVDET~1\DEVDET~1.EXE C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software\CounterSpy Client\sunasDTServ.exe C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software\CounterSpy Client\sunasServ.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Roxio\GoBack\GBTray.exe C:\Program Files\CMS Peripherals\ABSpro Backup\ABSLauncher.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\3\E_S10IC2.EXE C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe C:\Program Files\Highjack_this\HijackThis.exe F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=userinit.exe O2 - BHO: AcroIEHlprObj Class - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\Reader\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.ocx O2 - BHO: Norton Internet Security - {9ECB9560-04F9-4bbc-943D-298DDF1699E1} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\AdBlocking\NISShExt.dll O2 - BHO: NAV Helper - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll O3 - Toolbar: Norton Internet Security - {0B53EAC3-8D69-4b9e-9B19-A37C9A5676A7} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\AdBlocking\NISShExt.dll O3 - Toolbar: Norton AntiVirus - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Tweak UI] RUNDLL32.EXE TWEAKUI.CPL,TweakMeUp O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PS2] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ps2.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Opware12] "C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\OmniPagePro12.0\Opware12.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KBD] C:\HP\KBD\KBD.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Camera Detector] C:\PROGRA~1\ACDSYS~1\DEVDET~1\DEVDET~1.EXE -autorun O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ccApp] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Symantec NetDriver Monitor] C:\PROGRA~1\SYMNET~1\SNDMon.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sunasDTServ] C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software\CounterSpy Client\sunasDTServ.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sunasServ] C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software\CounterSpy Client\sunasServ.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Ad-aware] "C:\Documents and Settings\alexey kovalev\My Documents\my_docs_3_software_080104\Lavasoft\update_072103\Ad-aware.exe" +c O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe O4 - Startup: ABSpro Launcher.lnk = ?
