Hello,

Windows 2000, all updates installed.
McAfee virus scan updated, no problems.
Spybot updated, no problems found.

SYMPTOM: Upon reboot, all seems fine. After using browser for a little while, it becomes extremely slow, taking several minutes to load google.com.

Also, when problem is happening, cannot download via browser right click "save target as", gives message that file is not available but able to download same file on another computer in my house

Your help appreciated: DAVE M.

Hello dmonshaw , Welcome to the forum.

This is what I suggest you do.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
First of all, thanks for your response. I learned a few things from you and a few things from reading all the other closed items. I see the trend here. I have always used spybot but never ad-aware.

Steps Taken:

1. Ran TrendMicro HouseCall – Nothing Found

2. Ran AdAware - Found [Alexa] and [GigexAgent], both removed

3. Ran Spybot (again) this time found WildTangent, didn't find last time. Removed.

4. Went to WildTangent home page and ran their remover too (found here: http://www.pchell.com/support/wildtangent.shtml)

5. I also went into the add/remove programs control panel and removed like 20 old programs that I don't use anymore (don't know if this is important but couldn't hurt).

6. Windows Update (no new critical updates needed)

The exact problem I was having is that my browser would slow down, other pieces of software were OK. I would check the processor usage in Task Manager and Iexplore.exe would be peaking the CPU at 100%. Additionally, any website that I would visit that had a file to download, if I right-clicked and selected "save target as" it would tell me the file was not available (even though it was, and I proved from an alternate computer nearby). The only way to fix this issue was to reboot the pc, but after some short amount of time the problem would be back.

After doing all these things it has been only 12 hours, things seem to be fixed, I don't know which item fixed it. Will monitor the situation.
