Don't know what infection I might have.

Hello,

This is my first post to the forum and thought I would see what someone thinks of the issue I’m seeing. I think I might have an infection, but I don’t know where it could be hiding.

A little history, the kids were using the computer during the day when I returned home I noticed that when opening IE I was getting these popup notifications that my system was slow or infected and I should download some virus scanning software. Initially I dismissed all the windows not thinking much about it, some time later randomly these windows popped up again prompting me to download this virus scanning software. At this point I started looking at the Norton logs: Norton had detected WinFixer, Downloader.Trojan, and Dialer.Saristar. Norton claims to have blocked and removed these Viruses. Still every time I opened Explorer I would eventually get the popup. WinFixer was detected every time that these windows would popup and I killed them all. I switched from IE to FireFox since I had had it with IE. I had not problems for a few days until my son one day opened IE instead of FireFox. Norton started notifying me of Downloader at this point in the form of INFl32.dll and a few days later pmnnk.exe. Norton once again claims all has been removed, but somehow I don’t think so. It is my impression that I have some virus (process) that is triggered by I don’t know what (IE?) that goes out and fetches the viruses. I have run a few windows updates all the way up to the update for XP service pack 2. I read somewhere that I should not run the XP service pack 2 update until I’m sure I have removed any infections. Norton says my system is clean, Ad-aware says my system is clean. I have run hijack and am hoping that someone can give it a look to see if they see something suspicious. The only entries that I see that look like they might be something are:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {62543599-c416-4948-834c-8e0dda1bc670} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\INFl32.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: INFl32 - INFl32.dll (file missing)

But this file has been removed by Norton. The Norton report was:

Action taken: Quarantined
Description: Affected areas:

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.
Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.
    Let the system reboot.

I see your Sun Java may be out of date.
It is important to remove older versions as these are the ones with the holes in them. First, Uninstall all versions of Sun Java, from Add/Remove Programs. Then,
    Download the Newest Version>>>> http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Once installed, it is very important to test and see that it is in fact installed >>>> Use this link. Sun Java Test

Please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log, then post it into this topic.

Please advise if any problems remain.

Hello Piatan,

I ran through all your recommendations, and did not have any problems with any of the steps. I did remove my old Java runtime, but I still see the old version listed in the O16 section. I don’t know what the O16 section is, so I don’t know if it is important to remove the old Java runtime entries in this section? I installed the new Java runtime, but I don’t see it listed in the same way (I have not rebooted since the new Java runtime install).
For the past week I have not had any issues with Norton detecting viruses (or the popping up of browser windows prompting me to get some virus application). But, I have also stopped using IE. I opened it once after running all your recommendations and nothing odd happened. I did not wait long enough to see if I would get the popup windows after some time. I have also disabled ActiveX in IE. At this point I’m happy with FireFox, but I still want to be confident that all traces of whatever was causing the problem are removed from the system. I have included a new HiJackThis file of my system. Based on this file do you think I can update to XP SP2? Should I run IE (with ActiveX enabled) a few times to see if all is working as normal?
Thank you for all your help and time in looking at my computer issue. I really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Angus

Hi Angus Og:
You're welcome. Glad to be of assistance.

Might as well reboot and get a fresh start.
We will take care of those 016 Java entries with HJT. I'm surprised they are still present.

Here's a link, that may help you decide which Active X settings to use.
http://www.pensacolasgreatest.com/settings.html

About the only time IE and Active X is really necessary, is to get MS updates, which would be a good idea to do, as soon as we have finished here. MS is about to stop supporting SP1, so having SP2 is becoming very critical.

Here's a link to order the CD for SP2. It was free in the USA, including shipping, when last I checked. Outside the USA, shipping charges may apply.
Getting SP2 downloaded from the update site can sometimes be a problem, not always. But I do recommend getting the CD from Microsoft. It is a very simple and quick process to install from the CD. Shipping usually is less than one week, inside the USA.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa…us/default.mspx

Those two 016 entries for Java do seem to be the only necessary removals.

Close all windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check beside each of these entries listed below, if still present.

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0000-0003-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Runtime Environment 1.4.0_03) -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0001-0001-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Runtime Environment 1.4.1_01) -

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

If there are no continuing problems, I recommend the following.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

    * Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
    Click the "Delete Cookies" button
Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK

    * Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):

    Go to Tools > Options.
Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
    * Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin

Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
    Press OK to remove them.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
    http://castlecops.com/postlite7736-.html
So how did I get infected in the first place?

    Safe surfing. :wavey:
