Heya Folks, I've been having some difficulties in removing a nasty bit of spyware on my system and was hoping i could find a solution here. Two days ago i started recieving pop-ups like mad which is unusual for me considering i havnt had the problem for nearly a year. The pop-ups are opening in Internet Explorer windows which i no longer use in favor of Mozilla Firefox. Ive also been getting adds prompting me to download spyware removal tools. A few of the windows are labeled as "Internet Speed Monitor".
Ive been using Norton Anti-Virus 2005, Ad-aware SE, and Pop-up Stopper Free Edition to control any unwanted programs. Well obviously somthing got past so i upgraded Norton to the most recent 2008 edition, updated Ad-aware, and ran some scans in Safe-Mode to try and remove the malicious software to no avail. What it did remove included "Trojan.Vundo" and "Downloader" which Norton has continually been preventing from reinserting themselves since thier removal. I then ran windows update, downloaded Spybot Search and Destroy, and Windows Defender in an attempt to cover anything i may have been missing. I disabled my net connection and system restore, then tried to reboot in SafeMode again only to find that my desktop disappears after a few prompts asking me to continue in safemode or use system restore. So now i cant run any of my removal programs in Safemode. Ive always been able to handle everything thrown my way up until this point so im desperate for some help. Ill post my HiJackThis Log below and provide any and all information needed. Thank you in advance for any aid you can provide.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Sorry about the delay in responding :( If you still need help, Scan again with HijackThis, and copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi and thanks for the welcome. I really need your help. As im typing this my problems seem to have escalated. When I start up my computer Norton antivirus blocks "Downloader" and "Trojan Vundo" every time. I get the occasional popup but recently ive been getting Security alert bubbles on my taskbar warning of spyware and viruses found and they recommend downloading new removal tools. My computer downloaded "Live Safety Center" and "ONline Security Guide" without my prompting. Windows Defender has been coming up on occasion asking for more information on the same couple of files. The first time i attempted to reply to this post my screen went blue with white text saying i had to reboot my system due to some fatal error most likely caused by a virus. Here is my most recent Hijack this File.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Open the HijackThis Folder. Find the file HijackThis.exe, Right Click on the file and Select Rename. Rename Hijackthis.exe to Spyware.exe.

After the above:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.
OK, did all of the following instructions and here is the Vundo log

Ive downloaded Combofix and attempted to run it but as it prepares to run i get continual error report prompts saying "Freeware implementation of REG.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close." The program will then go no further.
Restart your computer in Safe Mode. Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen. Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter. This can take several miniutes to load. Now see if combofix will run
OK got it to work, here ye go

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Using IE-SPYAD to help block unwanted sites and activities

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.
