Help!

My brother built me this computer…. and then died 2 weeks later!
He taught me a bit about it - but I am past my expertise in these areas!

I have been slowing down lately and have tried all I know….
Done Virus Scans ( had a torjan or two – think I ridded myself of that)
and Spyware check, malware checks, etc.

Latest BitDefender online scan showed a virus in System Volume Information/restore…but it did not remove it.

I checked into that file (by unchecking the box " Hide Protected Operating Sytems" that kept it hidden) and found it had listed ( in the properties):

2.92 GB SIZE
1.53 GB SIZE ON DISK
5,504 FILES
301 FOLDERS

I closed it back up – did a search on how to clean up the System Volume Information.. and found you great folks!

I downloaded latest version of Hijack This – ran it and here is the log.

I trust that you know more than I do … and am willing to dump some of the programs and virus scans I have on the computer – as I think that is screwing me up, also.

Any help you can give me is much appreciiated.. like I said, my brother was "my expert" in areas like this for so long … his sudden death has left me at a loss – in more ways than one!

:)

Thanks!~
Mountain Momma

Hello Mountain Momma and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

I couldn't find any information on this file. Do you know what it is? Right click on the file and choose 'properties', than on the 'version' tab note what the "Company" and "Version" are.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\traywc.exe

If you still are unsure what this file is, please submit it to the following links for a scan.
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Step 1
You have Spybot S&D's Teatimer running which is good, but we need you to disable it for the remainder of the fix as it will interfere with the registry changes being made.
Open Spybot S&D in advanced mode, click Tools > Resident, and remove the check from "Resident Tea-Timer". Reboot after unchecking the entry.

Be sure to re-enable this option again once the computer is clean.

Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank

Optional items to check with HijackThis for improved performance.
You have SpyKiller on your computer. This program is on the "rogue/suspect list" because it uses false positives as goad to purchase. You can read about it here.
This is optional but I strongly recommend checking this entry than removing this program with Add/Remove Programs.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpyKiller] C:\Program Files\SpyKiller\spykiller.exe /startup

The following activeX controls will reinstall when(and if) you revisit that website, UNLESS you know they are from a safe source, check to remove.
O16 - DPF: RaptisoftGameLoader - http://www.miniclip.com/hamsterball/raptisoftgameloader.cab
O16 - DPF: {17D72920-7A15-11D4-921E-0080C8DA7A5E} (AimSp32 Class) - http://66.48.68.135/save/makeover.cab

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 3
Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove the following items (if found):

SpyKiller << Optional item explained above.

Step 4
Please set your computer to show all files.

* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Step 5
Please delete the following folder:

C:\Program Files\SpyKiller<< Only if fixed above.

Step 6
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications and how the computer is behaving.
Dear Alan–
Thanks for your swift reply! :) Your "the man"!

I have done as you suggested (and even removed a few more items that I knew were installed when the kids played some on-line games.)

The item in question TRAYWE.EXE is actually a program designed to chart one's diet and exercise efforts… so it wil stay!

You didn't mention to reverse your Step # 4 below – but I assume that I need to
(and go and re-check to "Hide Operating Systems", etc.)

I had a couple of questions of what these items are below - as SOME ARE SHOWN DOUBLE in the log ?

C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\csrss.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe

And whether I need these ( or what some are) ?

C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuauclt.exe
C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe ( I don't have an iPod!)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpztsb04.exe
Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_01\bin\npjpi150_01.dll
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_01\bin\npjpi150_01.dll
O23 - Service: NVIDIA Driver Helper Service (NVSvc) - NVIDIA Corporation -
C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exe

Won't know how it is responding as yet… will wait a few days to see (and kick kids off these free on-line games!)

Thanks again!
Holly

Your new log is clean. :)

I see that you are not using a Firewall on your computer. I recommend downloading ZoneAlarm and installing it. This can help prevent bad items from entering your computer.

MOST IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and IE to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet.
I recommend going to the following link and update to SP2. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer.
Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates

You didn't mention to reverse your Step # 4 below – but I assume that I need to
(and go and re-check to "Hide Operating Systems", etc.)

You are correct.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\csrss.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe

These are all legitimate system processes and need to be left alone.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuauclt.exe
C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe ( I don't have an iPod!)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpztsb04.exe
Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_01\bin\npjpi150_01.dll
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_01\bin\npjpi150_01.dll
O23 - Service: NVIDIA Driver Helper Service (NVSvc) - NVIDIA Corporation -
C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exe

wuauclt.exe - checks for windows updates
hpztsb04.exe - printer software driver
npjpi150_01.dll - extra button in Internet Explorer 'Tools' Menu for SunJava
Service: NVIDIA Driver Helper Service (NVSvc) - Video card software driver

iPodService.exe - You can remove this with Add/Remove Programs if not needed

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
Almost forgot the information for removing the virus from your first post.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the Performance tab, click File System, or press ALT+F.
3. On the Troubleshooting tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
4. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 3, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

Your online virus scans should now come up clean.
