Hi,

Up until about a week ago I had a copy of Norton System 2005 running, regularly ran Adaware and Spybot - then I started bulk mailing!!!

Now, my machine starts with Norton autoprotect disabled, and the my Norton can't be reactivated - just locks up trying to activate.

If I connect to the internet for any length of time, bulk emails start getting sent out…

Adaware and Spybot reporting nothing…

Please help.

Leg below…

Hello demoneye and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [.mssecure] C:\WINDOWS\System\mssecure.exe

The following have randomly named file names, and as such are normally malware, UNLESS you know what they are, and they are from a safe source, please check for removal.

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Please set your computer to show all files.

* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Step 3
Please delete the following file:

C:\WINDOWS\System\mssecure.exe

Step 4
Click Start < Control Panel < Internet Options < and on the Security tab click < Default Level

Step 5
Run at least two of the following online virus scans making sure to reboot in between each one. Allow them to fix anything they find.
You need to use Internet Explorer or Netscape browsers.
Bitdefender
Pandasoftware
Trend Micro << Click Auto Clean
Symantec Security Check << click scan for viruses
RAV Online Virus Scanner << Enter your e-mail address and click on To continue without subscribing
McAfee

Write down anything that can not be fixed.

Step 6
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread. Include anything that can not be fixed by the online scans.
Please let us know how the computer is behaving.
Hi Alan, Thanks for taking the time to reply. Because of the problems I was having, bulk emailing out when online, and my ISP "jumping up a down" over the number of emails I was sending, I had to take the drastic step of reinstalling Windows from scratch. Again, thanks for the time, but you can consider this case closed. DeMoNeye
I'm sorry for not being able to respond to you quicker. :(

It's a shame that one lousy file caused you all of this trouble. :rant2:
