Hello,

When I restart my computer,

1. I am unable to open applications quickly. I click on the icons in quick launch toolbar and nothing happens.
2. Norton Antivirus is stopped.

Also, if I wait long enough, say 30min - 1hr, everything seems to be OK. I used Ewido, Adaware, Spybot, Windows defender and Norton Antivirus to clean up

1. Ewido and Norton do not come up with anything.
2. Adaware and Spybot came up with some critical stuff which I deleted
3. Windows defender simply stops while scanning.

My Hijackthis.log is posted below. Please help me.

Welcome to the forum :wavey:

Do you recognize this application:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Blocker] "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Iereg.exe"

If not, please do this:

Please go to these free online file checkers:

Kaspersky Online File Scanner

Jotti Online File Scanner

VirusTotal Online File Scanner

And submit this file for a virus scan:

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Iereg.exe

Let me know the results.

You don't have to try all three scans.

If one scan says it's "infected", you can stop there.
:)
Hello Micah_6:8,

No, I do not recognize the application. I ran the scanners and none came up with any problem.

Some other symptoms of the problem are after restart -

1. The symantec antivirus realtime protection does not start.
2. When I click on the networking tab of task manager, it just hangs there.
3. When I double click on "my computer", I get the searching "torch light" icon and it continues searching.
4. When I right click on "my computer" and then properties, I do not get the properties windows and it just freezes there
5. When I click on my VPN, it just hangs there.
6. I can run adaware, spybot, etc. Other, probably non-network related, applications have no problem.

After about 30-32 minutes (yes alway this is the time range of time) everything starts working again.

Current hijackthis log attached. I stopped several startup items and took the log after the symantec antivirus realtime protection started.

Thanks

I don't see anything bad in the log now.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Blocker] "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Iereg.exe"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSBios] C:\WINDOWS\msup.exe -send

These were the only two items in the first log that I found "questionable".

The second item is definitely "bad".
Hello,

The problem has not gone away. The reason for the processes msup.exe and iereg.exe not appearing in the hijackthis log is because I explicitly turned them off using msconfig (startup tab).

I took two logs now with normal startup (set using msconfig). One log is immediately after restart. The second one is after 30 minutes when all the network related services seem to be restored i.e symantec antivirus runs, vpn run, networking tab in task manager runs, etc.,

Can someone please compare these logs and tell me why some my services take 30 minutes to function. Thanks in advance.

Hi, No. The symptoms persist. The problem is always at restart. For about half an hour after restart I cannot access some of the applications. After half an hour everything seems normal. Also, if I am at office and restart the computer with the ethernet cable connected to the computer, I do not see this problem. It is only when I restart the computer without network connection, do I see this problem. It looks as though the comp is repeatedly trying to do something and when it is unable to do it for half an hour, it just gives up. When restarted with network connection, it looks like the comp is able to do whatever it wants to at the beginning and so there is no problem with this kind of restart. Thanks, Raja
This is soemthing new in the list:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\SearchIndexer.exe

Do you know what it does?

Please try this online virus scan:

Panda Activescan
Accept default settings.

When finished, save the report, and post it in this thread.

Do you have Windows CD's available for this machine?

Navigate to this file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\SearchIndexer.exe

Put your cursor on it.

Read what pops up in the bubble.

If it says it's from Microsoft, we'll leave it alone.

If it doesn't say who made the program do this:

Please go to these free online file checkers:

Kaspersky Online File Scanner

Jotti Online File Scanner

VirusTotal Online File Scanner

And submit this file for a virus scan:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\SearchIndexer.exe

Let me know the results.

If it comes back "infected" on one scan, you can stop and skip the remaining scans.
