Hello Ed. :wavey:

Download the free trojan scanner A2 Squared, update and run a scan with it. Fix anything found then reboot when completed.

Please download and install Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D according to the following instructions. If you already have these programs, please make sure they are the latest version (Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.05, Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3), than run scans as described below.

Scanning With Spybot S&D;:

1. Downloaded and Install Spybot S&D; then download and install the DSO Exploit Bug Fix, accepting the Default Settings.

2. In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'. Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.

3. Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D.

4. Click the button to ‘Search for Updates’ then download and install the Updates.

5. Next click the button ‘Check for Problems’

6. When Spybot is complete, it will be showing ‘RED’ entries bold 'Black' entries and ‘GREEN’ entries in the window.

7. Make certain there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.

8. Choose ‘Fix Selected Problems’ and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.

9.REBOOT to complete the scan and clear memory.

10. Do not enable Tea Timer until the log is clean as it will prevent the fix from working.

Scanning With Ad-Aware SE:

1. Download and Install Ad-Aware SE, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.

2.Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.

3. Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.

4. Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window.

1) In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
*Automatically save log-file
*Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
*Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

Under Definitions:
*Prompt to udate outdated definitions - set the number of days

2) Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green :

Under Driver, Folders & Files:
*Scan Within Archives

Under Select drives & folders to scan -
*choose all hard drives

Under Memory & Registry: all green
*Scan Active Processes
*Scan Registry
*Deep Scan Registry
*Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
*Scan my Hosts file

3) Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:

Under Shell Integration:
*Move deleted files to recycle bin

Under Logfile Detail Level: (all green)
*include addtional object information
*DESELECT - include negligible objects information
*include environment information

Under Alternate Data Streams:
*Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
*Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT

4) Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:

Under the ‘Scanning Engine’:
*Unload recognized processes during scanning
*Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Under the ‘Cleaning Engine’:
*Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

Under the Log Files:
*Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Please do not check or make green: Include Module list in logfile

5. Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.

6. Click ‘Start’

*Choose:'Perform Full System Scan'
*DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.

7. Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.

8. If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window.

9. Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘finish’.

10. REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found.

Run at least two of the following online virus scans making sure to reboot in between each one. Allow them to fix anything they find.
You need to use Internet Explorer or Netscape browsers.
Bitdefender
Pandasoftware
Trend Micro << Click Auto Clean
Symantec Security Check << click scan for viruses
RAV Online Virus Scanner << Enter your e-mail address and click on To continue without subscribing
McAfee

Write down anything that can not be fixed.

Please update to HijackThis 1.99.1. (Open HijackThis and click config.. < Misc. Tools and click Check for Update Online.)
Scan with HijackThis and post the new log as a reply to this thread. Include anything that can not be fixed by the online scans.
Thanks a lot for your help. I did what was asked to do. Here are the things that were not fixed by online scans and here is my new HJT log.

Pandasoftware found these and couldn't fix:

C:\windows\system32\e6f1873b.dll (and two more in different folders) BrowserAid
C:\windows\system32\dxplor~1.exe
C:\documents and settings\administrator\local settings\backup_20050219
Purity Scan
eZula registry entry

Symantec found the following which couldn't fix:

C:\windows\woinstall.exe is infected with Adware.eZula
C:\windows\system32\Clifford Uninstall.exe is infected with Chernobyl CIH_SpaceFiller_CIH
C:\windows\system32\D0CE0C16B1.DLL is infected with Adware.BrowserAid
C:\windows\system32\e6f1873b.DLL is infected with Adware.BrowserAid

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Step 7
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know how the computer is behaving.
Hi Alan. Thanks for prompt response. I would like to uncheck the startup of several programs that we don't need. I also think that at startup some of the spyware is restarted. Can I uncheck the startup items or should I wait until we've "cleaned" it all? Ed PS I should have known better than to use hjt from a temp folder! :weee:
Hi Alan. I did what was asked. However I could not find the files window.exe nor etas.exe although they still show in the startup menu. Computer seems to be working file. Also for your info the R1 R0 and R3 files did not appear in HJT in safe mode. I had to fix them in normal mode.

This is my log now. It looks fine to me. I will also disable some of the startup items we no longer want. :)

Thanks a lot for your help.

The computer seems to be running well. Only issue is an advertising popup when I first open IE to the Bloomberg home page. The popup reads about:blank momentarily and then becomes an advertisement. Seems harmless and may be part of bloomberg’s advertising.

Are we cured?
Thanks again for your help.

Your new log is clean. :)

I would like to uncheck the startup of several programs that we don't need. I also think that at startup some of the spyware is restarted. Can I uncheck the startup items or should I wait until we've "cleaned" it all?

Here are some optional items that you can remove.

WINDVDPatch is a background task that is a plug-in manager for Creative drivers.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WINDVDPatch] CTHELPER.EXE

Reminder to register Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live! cards
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\Updreg.exe

This is an application scheduler installed with RealOne Player. You can fix this with HJT, but you will also need to set it not to load in RealPlayer itself to keep it from resetting itself: (1) Start RealOne Player (2) Tools -> Preferences (3) Automatic services in the Categories pane (4) Uncheck all options and then OK
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

This installs the QuickTime System Tray icon. You can fix this with HJT, but you will also need to set it not to load in QuickTime itself to keep it from resetting itself: (1) Open Quick Time Player (2)Edit > Preferences > Quick Time Preferences (3)uncheck Quick Time System Tray icon on the Browser Plug-in Pane
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

For the other startup entries, you can check here or here to see if the items are needed.

MOST IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and IE to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet.
I recommend going to the following link and update to SP2. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer.
Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates

Here is a great link that explains the procedure for updating to SP2 with less complications.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the Performance tab, click File System, or press ALT+F.
3. On the Troubleshooting tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
4. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 3, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
Your welcome. Glad it's working better now.
