I know I have a problem because Ad-Aware and SpyBot are telling me so. My dad told me to get HijackThis and he told me not to try to remove things until i know what im doing. Please help! Thank you!

Here is my log:

I just started getting pop ups all of a sudden. I bought my computer in February. I didnt have any protection on it besides what came with it until too late. I procrastinated and waited until i saw symptoms to get the computer protected. Now i get pop ups every once in a while and then i just run ad aware and spybot and it takes care of it for a while but it doesnt really get rid of anything. Im confused…
You have no visible antivirus nor firewall.

Both are necessary.

The firewall that is supplied with Windows XP SP2 isn't enough. It is "uni-directional", meaning it can keep some things from getting "in".

But if something is already "in" it doesn't stop it from getting "out".

Let's start here:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

Don't run it yet.

Please download, install, and update the NEW free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Close Ewido.
  • Boot in "safe" mode
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program. Under Main choose: Select All. Click the Empty Selected button. Close the program.
  • Run Ewido. Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. Select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  • When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.
Boot in normal mode.

[external image: Posted Image]Please post the results from ewido and a new hijackthis log.

There are free antivirus products and firewalls available here:

Securing Your PC After An Attack

Please decide whether you want to use a free antivirus and firewall from the above link, or get them elsewhere.

Please do not install any antivirus yet.

Let's be sure your system is "clean" before installing any new items.

I'd just like you to choose some now (and even download them if you want), but don't install them just yet.
:)
Thank you so much for your help, by the way! I appreciate it. I Followed your instructions but i think i lost the way somewhere in safemode because i dont remember getting a chance to save the report from ewido. The only two threats it came up with were Adware.DM and Adware.SpyHeal. There was something like 30 cases of them total. I quarentined both of them. After rebooting i ran Hijackthis and here is my log.

Thank you for your advice and the link for the free anti-virus software. I am ashamed to admit it but i dont really know the difference between viruses, spyware, or firewalls so alot of what you are saying to me is going over my head. Could you dumb it down for me and tell me what programs i need and why. Thanks so much again.
Meagan
The two you really should go ahead and install would be AVG Free antivirus, and Zone Alarm Free firewall. I see that combination a lot. You need them because an antivirus and firewall are just "basic protection". Your log still looks good.
I have Ad Aware, CWShredder, Spybot, hijackthis, and now ATF Cleaner and ewido. If i download the AVG and ZoneAlarm do i still need all these others? Can I get rid of some? Thanks so much for your help! Meagan
Out of the one's you've mentioned, you can uninstall Ewido. It's only a trial version anyway.

Keep AdAware and Spybot. Keep them updated, and run them at least once a week.

Make sure they are UPDATED AND CONFIGURED AS DESCRIBED here:

Configure Adaware

Configure Spybot

You could also uninstall HijackThis! if you want. It's a very small program. I'd leave it unless you think someone else using the system may "abuse or misuse" it.

You could also delete CWShredder and ATF Cleaner if you wish. There again, I'd leave them because they are such small files (they can't be "abused" like HijackThis! can).
