OK here's what's happening: I saw HuntBar show up on a Spybot S&D scan. Although I would select it and do "Fix Selected," it would reappear when I scanned again after rebooting. In Spybot S&D's scans, it shows this registry location under HuntBar:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\code store database\distribution
units\{87067f04-de4c-4688-bc3c-4fcf39d609e7}

I have gone to this location in the registry and tried to delete this key, but again, it reappears after rebooting.
I've gone to www.pestscan.com and tried their suggestions for removal. I've also done Hijack This scans; the same numerical code also shows up as an O16 - DPF (Downloaded Program File). Again, selecting this entry and doing "Fix Selected" doesn't work; it reappears after rebooting as well.

Here is my Hijack This log, if anyone knows what to do to get rid of this pain in the @#% please let me know what to do. I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks to anyone who can help me out!!!!!!!
Hi Yummers, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. If you still need some help, I will see what I can do.

I don't see a firewall running on your system, you may be running the SP2 firewall, if you want something free that will give you better protection, here are two to choose from. I suggest Zone Alarm, please wait until you are clean to try it out.
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/comp…reeDownload.jsp
http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm

I see TeaTimer.exe on board and a great program it is, but it will not let you make the changes we need to make. When you use HJT you will need to turn TT off. You can try by the clock, if the TT icon is there right click it and exit. If it is not that simple, then here are instructions for disabling it: http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

I am uncomfortable with where you have the HJT.exe: C:\Documents and Settings\User1\Start Menu\Programs\HijackThis.exe. Would you go to Docs and Settings, right click on a blank spot and make a NEW then FOLDER and move the HJT.exe into that folder. Thanks.

I would also like to say that I see nothing of Huntbar which is a nasty item. Look in Add Remove programs and if it should be there, uninstall it, and you can do a search of Files and Folders, if it locates any HuntBar items, delete them or go to where search says they are located and delete them there. If they resist, you may have to delete them in safe mode: http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml
I will say again it is not evident in the log and may be remnants left from the removal.

Scan with HijackThis and check the box in front of thee line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows then click on "Fix Checked" Clean Like this: Start, Run type "cleanmgr" without the quotes then ok. Check and remove anything windows locates. Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer. Post a new log along with your comments. Use the following two links to stay in this thread, and I love your avatar.

Thanks, pskelley. I really appreciate your help! :) Sorry it took so long to reply, I went to Las Vegas for a week!

Just so you know:
(with regard to your comments):

1) I am running the Windows firewall (SP2). I also have a hardware firewall through my Linksys router.

2) Before I posted this log, I did search Files and Folders and Add/Remove Programs for any HuntBar stuff, but came up with nothing. The only place I see any reference to the name HuntBar is in the results of Spybot S&D scans - with the {87067f04-de4c-4688-bc3c-4fcf39d609e7} registry key I put in the beginning of my first post.

3) Don't know if this has anything to do with it, but my computer has been signaling me of a Windows Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB886903) - and the installation keeps failing. Is the spybug keeping it from installing? If this has nothing to do with the spybugger, I can ask in another post.

I did everything that you told me to do, exactly as you said. However it appears that those 016-DPF items "came back" from what I see in the HJT log…

RRGH! :rant2:

Now what? When I restarted, TeaTimer came back on. Should I disable it so that it stays off when I'm fixing and restarting?

Thanks again, I hope we can figure something out. My latest HJT log is below.

p.s. Thanks also about the avatar. I love it too. B) It was a cool find.

Hi Yummers, No problem, they keep me plenty busy. I hope you did well. Something went wrong with the removal, even this orphan BHO:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {08E74C67-99A6-45C7-94DA-A397A8FD8082} - (no file) was not removed. If TT was off then one of your other programs, perhaps BHODemon 2 is preventing changes. We will start in Safe Mode this time.

I am running the Windows firewall (SP2). I also have a hardware firewall through my Linksys router.

I also use a Linksys hardwired router but I also run a third party firewall (ZoneAlarm Free) as I do not trust the SP2 firewall, Your call.

The only place I see any reference to the name HuntBar is in the results of Spybot S&D scans

This may be something quarantined in Spybot, try purging the quarantine files.

I realize some of the 016 - DPF (Downloaded Program Files) are safe, I see PCPitStop and others that are safe. There are two very bad ones in there:
O16 - DPF: {87067F04-DE4C-4688-BC3C-4FCF39D609E7} -
-WebSearch Toolbar
O16 - DPF: {FE1A240F-B247-4E06-A600-30E28F5AF3A0} -

I will remove them all, and when you visit the site again you will be prompted to download the cab file once more. I hope you do not go back to the above sites that infected you.

Use the instructions for your Operating System in to following link to enter safe mode.

Thanks again for all your help!
Yummers, are you sure you are following the directions to start your computer in safe mode before using HJT to remove the items? I can see no reason why these items will not delete with HJT as TeaTimer and other programs that may try to stop the fix are not running in safe mode. Would you make one more attempt to do this in SAFE MODE. I will give you other sites to make sure you enter the safe mode.

pskelley… I have been doing what you've told me to do in Safe Mode. I've tried it twice now. I do Start, Run, "msconfig", go to BOOT.INI, check SAFEBOOT, click OK, and then restart when prompted - and the computer boots up in Safe Mode. Believe me, I don't understand EITHER why these spybugs are hanging on so tight after all our attempts to rid them. What now??? Thanks,
OK, I appreciate that information. One of our Administrators is taking a look at the log and I am waiting for her advice. I will post for you as soon as I have some information. Thanks for your patience. pskelley
Ok Yummers, It is possible that you have one of the new infections that do not show up in the HijackThis log, so we will be doing detailed cleanup. As we move through these steps it is important that you give me feedback, do them in the order requested and keep a record about any results as we move through these steps. Post the information when you post a log. Thanks

1) Let's clean first to make sure nothing is hiding in temp folders. We will clean the contents of the temporary internet folders and all temp folders including the Prefetch folder. It is important that you remove the contents of the folders NOT THE FOLDERS. Make a note of any temp information that can't be cleaned because a program is using it and go back to that folder while in safe mode later and delete it.
Clean Like this: Start, Run type "cleanmgr" without the quotes then ok. Check and remove anything windows locates. Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.
Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.
Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.
Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Locate the C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch and delete the CONTENTS…NOT THE FOLDER. The first time you reboot will be slow as windows repopulates this folder with the legitimate files needed to make the bootup quicker.

2) Download and run this tool, let me know if it locates anything in your next post:
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

3) We want to disable TeaTimer, use these instructions. http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm Once your log is clean you can enable it again. I also want you to disable BHODaemon. If you have to, uninstall it and reinstall it after you are clean. http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm

4) Download Getservices.zip from here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/getservices.php follow the instructions in the tutorial to produce a log, post that log when requested.

5) Download Dllcompare from here: http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showtopic=1725 Follow the instruction to create a log, post that log when requested.

6) Use Regedit to search the Registry for that specific string in the code store - let us know if the entry is still there:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\code store database\distribution
units\{87067f04-de4c-4688-bc3c-4fcf39d609e7}

7) Boot into safe mode: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…src=sec_doc_nam While in safe mode, scan with HijackThis and check these items, then click on fix checked:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {08E74C67-99A6-45C7-94DA-A397A8FD8082} - (no file)

O16 - DPF: {FE1A240F-B247-4E06-A600-30E28F5AF3A0} -

Now scan again with HJT and create a new log, while still in safe mode. Empty the recycle bin and restart to normal mode. Post the log that was created in safe mode.

8) Now while in normal mode, scan with HJT and create a logfile, post that logfile, also post the Dllcompare and Getservices log along with it.

Thanks…pskelley

pskelley,

From the latest HJT log, it looks like the problem may be solved! Yay!
I won't get my hopes up, though.

One note from following your steps: When trying to delete the contents of temp files in C/Documents and Settings, under my own personal User login, the folder Local Settings was there in Normal Mode, but wasn't there in Safe Mode - so I couldn't delete the contents of that file. The files I wanted to delete were named ~DF4DDC.tmp and ~DF652F.tmp.

Here are the logs you requested:
