SpybotS&D 1.4 used to take 10 minutes to scan my system. It now takes about three hours for the same number of objects. Safer Networking have yet to come up with an answer. My Hijack This! log reveals the following suspicious looking registry setting:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll.

SDHelper.dll. is an application extension that works with SpybotS&D. Despite uninstalling/reinstalling Spybot three times ‘(no name)’ still persists and Spybot continues to run like the proverbial dog.

I suspect this may be caused by another rogue registry setting I have been unable to spot.

Here is the complete Hijack This! log. Grateful thanks in advance for any ideas.

Hello and welcome to Tomcoyote forum. You said this:

Safer Networking have yet to come up with an answer. My Hijack This! log reveals the following suspicious looking registry setting:

Who did you deal with at Safer? I help there myself and those folks know a Wareout hijacking when they see one? Some nice folks in the Ukraine decided you needed hacked, look here and the link is safe to click on: http://www.whois.sc/85.255.114.14

This: O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll. is normal for HJT in the log. A quick Google of the CLSID number would have shown you that: http://castlecops.co...helper_dll.html

Instructions start here:

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.sub.../Fixwareout.exe
http://swandog46.gee.../Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log in the forum please.

Post the two logs bolded above and we will see if there is anything else to do.

Thanks...pskelley

Hi pskelley

Many thanks for your help on this one. Sorry for not replying sooner but have just returned from my travels. Fixwareout.exe worked like the proverbial magic and Spybot now runs at its normal pace. Here are the logs you requested. Please let me know if anything else needs to be fixed.

Thanks again

OK, thanks for returning this information, let's clean a little as we finish up.

1) HJT needs it own folder, please return to C:\ and make a new one called HJT. Move HJT.exe and any logs there into it, backups will store there also. I fear My Download Files will be used for other stuff.

2) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

3) I suggest you update McAfee and run a complete system scan also, if there is andthing McAfee can delete or quarantine, post the complete name and pathway for me.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [jbfgh.exe] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\jbfgh.exe
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\VxD\MSTCP: NameServer = 85.255.114.14,85.255.112.88

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.
http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\jbfgh.exe >>> file

If you don't have a good cleaner, use this one with these instuctions:
Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log, which should be clean. Let me know how you are running.

Thanks..Phil

Hi Phil

Followed your instructions with the following results: -

1. HJT now has its own folder in C:\ root directory

2. AdAware 1.06 found and fixed four tracking cookies

Spybot 1.4 found and fixed Avenue A, Inc and MediaPlex tracking cookies plus the following registry key: -

Pipas.A: Settings (Registry key, fixed)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ruins

3. McAfee antivirus scan completely negative. Nothing to post.

4. HJT scanned and fixed:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [jbfgh.exe] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\jbfgh.exe
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\VxD\MSTCP: NameServer = 85.255.114.14,85.255.112.88

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Jbfgh.exe defied deletion then transmuted into jbdut.exe and jbwuc.exe. These also refused to delete until I resorted to Safe Mode. I then purged them from my startup list via Spybot/Advanced Mode/Tools/System Startup

CCleaner found and fixed 112 registry issues.

For some time now my system has been taking almost 10 minutes to complete system bootup. The desktop appears in just over a minute. The remainder is the time taken before I have full control of the mouse pointer. This remains the case even despite the cleanup we have just done. Do you have any ideas?

See new HJT log below.

Thanks
David

Hi David, In reference to your question about boot time, I have a Compaq with Win98 and two Dells, one WinXP Pro one XP Home. That would be my best suggestion, Windows XP :) Let me look at the log, if we are clean, I'll have some suggestions for staying that way, then I'll take a look at the log and I may have some suggestions.

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 22:51:44, on 01/03/06
This log is clean of malware, Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

You just do not have a lot showing that is not needed. I use McAfee VSO and you must have a hugh Security Suite, it will no doubt, take some time to boot up. How is your RAM? I would put all you can afford in the computer. Here are some suggestion, but sure they are for your OS.

Hi Phil Many thanks for all your help. The links you gave me certainly look useful and I'll be trying out a few things over the next week or two. I’m sure you’re right about biting the XP bullet. I came to that conclusion some months ago. But, for those of us who haven’t jumped yet, wouldn’t it now be worth hanging on for Vista? Yes, I do have a huge security suite – McAfee Internet Security Suite 7.0, which includes Antivirus, Firewall, Spamkiller and Privacy Service (I’m almost convinced the last two bring very little to my party for the overheads they impose). I also now have HJT, Spybot, AdAware and CCleaner but, since none of these are among my startup programs, I’m assuming they have no significant effect on boot times or speed of applications. Last year I upgraded my system RAM from 128Mb to 384Mb but this has produced no noticeable performance gain. Therefore, I’m somewhat reluctant to invest in any more RAM (the max. is 768Mb). I can find nothing in Windows Help, or in anything else I’ve read, regarding the need to reconfigure Win98 to optimise the use of any added RAM. At least it’s good to know my system is clean and that the long boot time is attributable to the amount of stuff on my system rather than any remaining viruses/malware or registry problems as I suspected. One thought does occur: my ‘Favourites’ folder has grown very large over time. What effect would this have on boot time? Seems it may be time for a ‘Spring clean’. Thanks again. Take care David

Hi David, You are probably right, but it may be a while before Vista is out there and then the bugs are worked out of it., It sounds like ram is not your problem, but I have heard it to be an old wives tale that there is a maximum you can use on Win98. Let face facts, the Operating System never did handle resources well and that is not going to change. I personally don't believe the favorites would effect it, if anything it would be the overall condition of the hard drive and how much space you use. The more you have on the hard drive, the more often you should defrag and run scan disk. Most knowledgeable folks say this should also be done in safe mode. HJT, Spybot, AdAware and CCleaner, right none of these are running so unless you have a space problem on the drives...not to worry about those. Search Googe for Operating System specific ideas to improve the performance of your system. I do have a good free registry cleaner, and instructions for using it if you want to do a better cleaning than CCleaner did? Let me know and I would be glad to post it for you. I'll give you a couple of days before I close the thread. Stay safe, it's a cyber jungle out there. Thanks...Phil

Hi Phil I don’t think there’s any problem with my hard drive. I’ve just run Scandisk, which gives it a clean bill of health. It’s a 20Gb drive, less than 24% full and I defrag every 60-90 days. First, I close down all TSR programs except Explorer and Systray. In spite of this, defrag restarts several times before it completes and I’ve no idea what’s causing it. Sometimes, on bootup, I get error messages that McAfee application components are missing and telling me to reinstall. Rebooting usually makes the problem disappear and it doesn’t happen again for a while. I didn’t mention this issue before because I was hoping CCleaner had cured it, but it has just reared its ugly head again. I suspect remnants of previous versions of McAfee still lurking in the registry (not spotted by CCleaner) to be the cause. A few weeks ago, a friend gave me a copy of Registry Mechanic 5.1 on CD-Rom. But when I installed and ran it, my registry became corrupted. Fortunately, I was able to restore it from a previous backup. So, yes, if you can recommend another, more thorough, free registry cleaner, I’d certainly like to give it a try. Keep up the good work. Best wishes David

As I mentioned in the last post, I had problems trying to run maintenance programs also until I realized every time any program made any change, defrag started over. I started doing my maintenance in safe mode and never had another problem. As far as McAfee, that would be a hard one to troubleshoot with all of the McAfee on this computer. Since you pay them for their software, I would write down these problems you are having and contact McAfee for help resolving them.

This Registry Cleaner is a good one, but I can not remember if it runs on Windows 98 or not. You can give it a try. Just keep an eye open for any clue it might not run on Win98.

Backup Registry:
Backup your Registry...
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run...)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

RegSeeker canned:
I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder,
open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program.
Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK.
When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked
and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within
the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything
it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly,
control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything).
In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click
any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen.
Reboot When done.

Thanks...Phil
