Hi,

Did a virus scan using Norton Antivirus but was unable to delete the "Adware Bargain Buddy".

Fyi, I have scanned the PC with the "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and also the "SpyBot - Search & Destroy". Deleted whatever that came up.

Please see if there are any harmful spyware or hijacker in the system. So far, no major problems faced though I would really appreciate ifanyone could assist me in making my systems free of any malware.

Thanks in advance.

Here's the logfile.

Hi Sharul, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. If you are still looking for help I will see what I can do. First we need to fix your HijackThis.exe. It needs a folder to store backups and logs in. Here is what it looks like now:
C:\Program Files\HijackThis.exe. Go to C:\Program Files and right click on a blank spot. Choose NEW then FOLDER. Call it HJT, then move the HijackThis.exe into that folder. Move any logs you see there into the folder also. Then it will look like this: C:\Program Files\HJT\HijackThis.exe. Thanks.

Now I need to say that while I see adware in your log, I do not see Bargain Buddy. Here is a little information about the item: http://www.pchell.com/support/bargainbuddy.shtml, you can look in Add Remove programs and uninstall it if there, it is not running or it would show in the log. You can also use Start, Search, Files and Folders, then search for Bargain Buddy to see if anything is still there.
Here is some information about SP2 you may need in the future. You should not consider this download before reviewing this information.
SP2 CD
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa…us/default.mspx
What you should know
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx

Ok, now I will address the adware I do see in the log. I see SpywareGuard running and it is a very good program and if properly configured it will stop us from making the changes with HJT. You will have to turn it off until you are done, the restart will return it to your System Tray. Right click and open the program, click on File then Exit.

Scan with HijackThis and put a check in the box in front of each of these lines:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…rch/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.yahoo.com.sg/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…rch/search.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows then click on "Fix Checked"
Run your cleanmgr and allow it to remove anything it locates, empty the recycle bin and restart the computer. Surf a bit to see how it's running, then post a new log along with any comments you have. Use the following two links to stay in this thread.

Hello Sharul, Just a couple of items, I see this in the log: C:\Program Files\Album Galaxy\AlbumGalaxy.exe. Seems that this may have been downloaded since the last log. I do not see msconfig running on auto indicating Selective Startup? If this is the case I want to point out for future reference that you should not add software when troubleshooting is in progress. Thanks.
I can find little information about the product, but here is a list of unsafe and safe files sharing programs: http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/ That being said, your log is clean. Here is some information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay that way:

Hello pskelley, Thanks a mill for the assurance. Appreciate it. Yes, was actually downloading songs via an MP3 search engine songs when scanning the PC with Hijackthis. Didn't realize that it could have affected the scan. Sorry. Anyway, thanks again, soldier. :)
Hi,

Scanned the PC again with Norton Antivirus and failed to delete the following item:

"The file C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\YPSR\Quarantine\ppq1E.tmp is a Adware threat."

Any idea what to do?

Here's the latest logfile. Thanks

Hello Sharul,

The file C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\YPSR\Quarantine\ppq1E.tmp is a Adware threat

The key word here is Quarantine. It is unlikely that Norton is seeing something in it's own quarantine files, but delete them anyway. It is also very possible that something is quarantined in Spybot, so delete the quarantine area of Spybot. If you are running Ad-aware (and you should be) it also has an area where it stores quarantined item, empty it also. Leave those items you deleted in the recycle bin for a couple of days to make sure everything is functioning correctly, then dump the trash too. I would also make sure all Temp files are deleted including the Prefetch folder. These links will explain how to do this:
http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-6270-5165773.html
http://www.personal-computer-tutor.com/deletingtempfiles.htm

Once you are sure everything is running ok, then I would like you to purge the System Restore so we have a new fresh restore point. Here are manual instruction and a link if it is needed:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…src=sec_doc_nam

MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Last but not least, since your log is clean, here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
