I let my brother use my laptop for like an hour or two and when I got it back and done a few scans to make sure my computer was free of stuff. there was some items found. I done a scan with Norton and it was clean. Done a scan with Spybot - Search & Destroy and it found some stuff and it said it removed it. After that I ran and scan with AdWare and it found and removed some more and look like the same thing that Spybot - Search & Destroy removed. When I was finshed scanning and removing I scan CleanUp and then restarted my computer and ran AdWare again and it found and remove the same things that it removed the first time. I'm loat

Hello and welcome to the TomCoyote Forums Jeremy!

It appears as though you have been infected by a variant of SDBot as seen by the following lines in your HijackThis log.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [{381A0199-07CA-1033-0428-050826040001}] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\{381A0199-07CA-1033-0428-050826040001}\Update.exe" mc-110-12-0001032

O23 - Service: COM+ Messages - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchosts.exe" -e mc-110-12-0001032 (file missing)
<– do not let the (file missing) entry fool you. It is there… as seen in your running processes…

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchosts.exe

Download this tool and save it somewhere handy but do not run it yet.
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.zip

You will need to extract the contents of the file using an unzipping utility like winzip.
Once extracted, you will see a file named SDFix.exe. (it is a self extracting exe) just double click it to extract it. You should get a notepad window open up upon doing that with the following text:

The SDFix Folder has been extracted to %systemdrive% - Please run from that location.

(%systemdrive% = drive that contains the Windows directory - typically 'C:\SDFix')

Open the SDFix folder in Safe Mode then double click the RunThis.bat file to
start the fixtool. If run in Normal Mode, options to download and run Anti-Virus
command line scanners are displayed.

Once you have done that, restart the computer in safe mode. To get in safe mode, while the computer is restarting, just after the lights flash on the keyboard and beeping but before the windows loading screen appears tap the F8 key on your keyboard. You should get a menu. Choose to start in safe mode (no networking).

Once the computer has fully booted up, navigate to the SDFix folder that was created by the self-extracting exe as noted above. Typically, this will be C:\SDFix\ and run the "RunThis.bat" file by double clicking it.
Follow the prompts and let it finish. You should get a message to restart the computer.
It may seem slower than normal to restart, this is normal.
Once the script has finished your desktop will finish loading. Once that is done, go in C:\SDFix\ and find the file "Report.txt".

Paste the contents of this file along with a new Hijack This log in a reply here.

Good luck
SDBot is a family of trojans that have been circulating for quite some time. There are many variants of this trojan. Most have backdoors that allow the computer to be remotely accessed. The distribution methods vary wildly from one variant to the next so I can't really tell you how it got in. Most likely from an email attachment or from a vulnerability in Windows. Those would be my guess. It is a wise and safe measure to refrain from clicking on links of unknown origin. I will point you to some good advice and good reading once you are cleaned. :) Good luck

Well I called my brother and ask him what he was doing on my computer and he said he was looking for roms for his xbox. He said he download some rom downloader call Zango or something like that. I use Zone alarm for my firewall and I seen that Update.exe Program trying to get on the internet and I blocked it do made it done some good I don't know.

Thanks Jeremy
Hi Jeremy,

Sorry for the delay in my response. Been a long day…

That's looking much better! Seems like the fix removed the service and its associated file.

Just to be sure, you should check and see if this folder exists still. If found, delete it.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\{381A0199-07CA-1033-0428-050826040001}\

Also you can remove the sdfix folder and its backups.

The rest of the log looks good. You did well in blocking the update.exe from accessing the network.

You should tell your brother, the next time he downloads something, he ought to scan it with a good up-to-date anti-virus program. ;)
When in doubt, don't run the file. You can always use http://www.kaspersky.com/remoteviruschk.html to upload and test one file.

Norton is far from being 100% accurate. If your subscription is going to expire soon, you might want to consider a different AV.
I recommend AVG Free. http://free.grisoft.com/

Are Ad-Aware and Spybot still reporting the same items? And if so, what are they?

You also might want to flush your system restore points as they will not be clean. You can do this by turning it off, rebooting and turning it back on, creating a new restore point after that.

To turn it off and on, right-click on "My Computer" - select "Properties". Click the System Restore Tab. Put a check in the "Turn off System Restore on all drives" checkbox and hit apply. Restart the computer. Then go back to the System Restore tab and uncheck it, hit apply. Then go to the System Restore function by going to Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore and follow the prompts to create a new restore point.

And last but not least…

So how did I get infected in the first place?
Some good reading there…

Let me know how you're getting along. :)
Well that folder wasn't there. So SDFix done it's job. I remove the SDFix folder and it's backups. I do tell my brother to scan everyday he downloads, but guess he don't listen, and guess who won't be using my computer again. Ad-Aware and Spybot report clean scans and Norton is running out soon. I was using AVG but someone told me Norton was better so I switch to back to it. I always though that it picked up download virus fast then Norton. So when use avg and a p2p program how do you get avg to auto scan everything you download?? As soon as I get done writing this post I'll dump the restore points. Many Thanks Jeremy Jeremy
I don't think there is a way to automatically scan downloads with AVG. Perhaps in the P2P software you're using, there might be an option. But AVG does have a very good shell integration scan. Right click the file and choose to scan with AVG. Works pretty good. And the AVG resident will alert even if you just open a folder that contains a virus. I've used AVG free for years and it hasn't let me down. :)

I'm glad your scans are now coming up clean. Good job!
Right click and scanning isn't a problem for me but my brother isn't good at remember to do that, norton suto scan p2p program i use has an option to have a anti-vrus software scan when files are downloaded, do you know the file I should choose? Jeremy
That's a good question… I'm trying to find it (if it is possible with the free version) and so far, all I can see would be the command line scanner (avgscan.exe) but I'm not sure how that would work… (what switches you'd need to set if any) I just tried the context menu scan and had a look at task manager… It seems as though avgw.exe is used. Not sure if that would work. Guess you could try it. I had a look at the help file and I can't find no info regarding this. Maybe someone will come up with the answer…
