I am at my wits end here. I have tried AdAware, Spybot, Aluria, SpySweeper, TDS-3 and I still can't seem to isolate this infernal thing. I have rebooted to safe mode, and run each product twice, removing anything that looks suspicious, yet I just can't get away from this thing.

At any rate, here is the HijackThis log - 1.99 verision installed.

Help me…..

Hello lpcaz and welcome to TomCoyote.

You have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!
Here you go. You have no idea how grateful I am for this. Currently I'm without a contract (hence broke), but as soon as I get a few dimes to rub together, I'm donating! Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!
after the fix portion is done. please run the option to restore the winlogon defaults. Most of the notify key is missing. After you do that post a option 1 log again.
Wow. This looks promising. No popups as yet. Here's the log from the fix.

Many thanks again people. This is a bit beyond me :)
There is still some work to go but, I'm waiting to hear back from ShadowWar before continuing with the fix. He is the creator of this great tool. :) I'll be back with you soon.
Step 1
Open Task Manager (ctrl+alt+delete) and end task on the following:

TeaTimer.exe These are to make sure that these programs do not interfere with the fix.
gcasDtServ.exe

Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

If you or an administrator did not set these restrictions or they have not been set with a program such as Spybot S&D, check these also.

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Optional items to check with HijackThis for improved performance.
CTHELPER is a background task that is a plug-in manager for Creative drivers.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WINDVDPatch] CTHELPER.EXE

Resource hog that launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. Some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it isn't required anyway.
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 3
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread. Let us know how the computer is running.
Here ya go. I am a bit curious about the R0 entry. IS this a sign I have the dreaded about.blank malware?

Also, Im now wondering which anti-spyware program to run. I have SpySweeper, Aluria, Xsoft Spy, AdAware, SpyBot and Microsoft's new beta product, which used to be Giant. I have the feeling that running one should be sufficient, but which one? Any opinions?

The machine, however, is running great now. No popups at all (Yay!!). And as I said, as soon as I land a contract, I'm donating!

I am a bit curious about the R0 entry. IS this a sign I have the dreaded about.blank malware?

Nope not about:blank. Just a harmless entry that can be fixed.

Also, Im now wondering which anti-spyware program to run. I have SpySweeper, Aluria, Xsoft Spy, AdAware, SpyBot and Microsoft's new beta product, which used to be Giant. I have the feeling that running one should be sufficient, but which one?

This is up to user preference. You may want to read this about Aluria and decide if you want to keep it. Remember that the Microsoft product is still Beta and is prone to false positives.

Open Task Manager and end task on the following:

gcasServ.exe
TeaTimer.exe
gcasDtServ.exe

Open HijackThis, run a scan and check the following:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\winxp\system32\blank.htm

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place"

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
