Click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Now follow these steps to reboot into Safe Mode and delete the offending files/folders:

Restart your computer in Safe Mode by following these directions:

How to Start To Safe Mode Using the F8 method in Windows 98/98SE/ME

To start your computer in Safe Mode:
*turn the computer on
*as the computer restarts, press and hold down the Ctrl key until the Windows 98 startup menu
appears. (This also works with the F8 key following the same steps)
*Choose Safe mode from the startup menu,
*press Enter
*Windows starts in Safe mode.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Open My Computer.
* Select the View menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* In the Hidden files section select Show all files.
* Click OK.

Find the following files/directories and delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\IAU.EXE
C:\PROGRAM FILES\WEBSX\ <==directory
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WINTOOLS\ <–directory
C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

While still in Safe mode follow these steps to clean out your temporary files:]/b]

This process will clean out your Temp files and your Temporary Internet Files. Please do both steps:

Step 1:Delete Temp Files
To clean out your temp files, click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there. If you get an error when deleting a file, skip that file and delete all the others. If you had trouble deleting a file, reboot into Safe Mode and follow this step again. You should now be able to delete all the files.

Do this same process for %windir%\temp.

Step 2: Delete Temporary Internet Files
Now I want you to open up Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the Delete Files button and put a checkmark in Delete offline content. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Post your new log file back here as a relpy to this topic and I will review it.

Here's the topic: http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?showtopic=27025

Hey bigspazz. Although things are looking better there are still a couple of items to fix. I see that the IAU.exe file is back. This is and adware app purporting to be an internet acccelerator which actually is part of the EasySearch adware app. We will delete this again.

Also, I do not see any anti-virus running on your computer. In today's internet world it is important to propect your computer against virus threats. Here are a couple of links to free anti-virus programs that we highly recommend:

Grisoft AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition and
Avast Anti-Virus Home Edition.

Please choose one of them and install it on your computer at this time and follow the directions to perform an update and a complete scan.

Next, start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following entries and click in the checkbox in front of each one to select it:

O2 - BHO: F1 Organizer Class - {00000EF1-0786-4633-87C6-1AA7A44296DA} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ATPART~1.DLL
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Internet Acceleration Utility] C:\WINDOWS\IAU.EXE

Now, click on the Fix Checked button to finish the repair and then close HijackThis.

Next, follow these steps to reboot into Safe Mode and delete the offending files/folders:

Restart your computer in Safe Mode by following these directions:

How to Start To Safe Mode Using the F8 method in Windows 98/98SE/ME

To start your computer in Safe Mode:
*turn the computer on
*as the computer restarts, press and hold down the Ctrl key until the Windows 98 startup menu

*Choose Safe mode from the startup menu,
*press Enter
*Windows starts in Safe mode.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Open My Computer.
* Select the View menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* In the Hidden files section select Show all files.
* Click OK.

Find the following files/directories and delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\IAU.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ATPART~1.DLL (will probably be ATPartners.dll)
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\im64.dll

While still in Safe mode follow these steps to clean out your temporary files:

When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

ta!
A big hiya bigspazz. Your log looks great! Congratulations! You now appear to be virus and malware free. That's OK that you didn't find the files to delete in the previous post. They were probably removed by the anti-virus scan you did but we like to verify to make sure. There are still a couple of orphaned entries to remove so start HijackThis and perform a scan.

Look for the following 2 items and place a checkmark in front of them:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
O3 - Toolbar: MSN - {BDAD1DAD-C946-4A17-ADC1-64B5B4FF55D0} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\MSN APPS\MSN TOOLBAR\01.02.3000.1001\EN-GB\MSNTB.DLL (file missing)

Click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair and then close HijackThis.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

    See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

    Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

    For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

    Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

    Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

    Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
