I am trying to clean up/debug my daughter's Toshiba laptop while she is home for the holidays. I have installed AVG, Cookiewall and Hijackthis. I found 6 trojans and took care of them. She also has AdAware, which is updated and has been run and I hope I've stopped the Messenger popups by changing those settings.

But….we still get Windows Media player launching at startup. In searching around, I have read that it may be connected to the error message that also comes up at startup that says it can't find "Windows/system32/bridge.dll".
Thanks for your assistance–Julie in Idaho

Below is a Hijackthis log that I hope someone can review and help me with:

Hello Julie and welcome to TomCoyote.

You have a peper infection that we need to remove

http://www.memorywatcher.com/uninst.exe

When you run the uninstaller, you MUST have an internet connection active for it to work

This Peper removal tool only works if run twice. To complete each stage of the Peper removal you need to REBOOT to clear the peper infection each time you run the tool, or the infection will remain.

Download CWShredder.exe to your desktop from one of these places:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3019
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshr…r_download.html

Double click on the file to clean up clicking FIX to have it remove all it finds.

Please run it in safe mode (F8 at boot/computer startup).

Please download and install Adaware SE and Spybot S&D according to the following instructions. If you already have these programs, please make sure they are the latest version (Adaware SE Personal 1.05, Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3), than run scans as described below.

Scanning With Spybot S&D:

1. Downloaded and Install Spybot S&D then download and install the DSO Exploit Bug Fix, accepting the Default Settings.

2. In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'. Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.

3. Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D.

4. Click the button to ‘Search for Updates’ then download and install the Updates.

5. Next click the button ‘Check for Problems’

6. When Spybot is complete, it will be showing ‘RED’ entries bold 'Black' entries and ‘GREEN’ entries in the window.

7. Make certain there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.

8. Choose ‘Fix Selected Problems’ and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.

9.REBOOT to complete the scan and clear memory.

10. Do not enable Tea Timer until the log is clean as it will prevent the fix from working.

Scanning With Ad-Aware SE :

1. Download and Install Ad-Aware SE, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.

2.Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.

3. Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.

4. Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window.

1) In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
*Automatically save log-file
*Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
*Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

Under Definitions:
*Prompt to udate outdated definitions - set the number of days

2) Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green :

Under Driver, Folders & Files:
*Scan Within Archives

Under Select drives & folders to scan -
*choose all hard drives

Under Memory & Registry: all green
*Scan Active Processes
*Scan Registry
*Deep Scan Registry
*Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
*Scan my Hosts file

3) Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:

Under Shell Integration:
*Move deleted files to recycle bin

Under Logfile Detail Level: (all green)
*include addtional object information
*DESELECT - include negligible objects information
*include environment information

Under Alternate Data Streams:
*Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
*Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT

4) Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:

Under the ‘Scanning Engine’:
*Unload recognized processes during scanning
*Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Under the ‘Cleaning Engine’:
*Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

Under the Log Files:
*Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Please do not check or make green: Include Module list in logfile

5. Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.

6. Click ‘Start’

*Choose:'Perform Full System Scan'
*DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.

7. Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.

8. If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window.

9. Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘finish’.

10. REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found.

Run at least two of the following online virus scans making sure to reboot in between each one. Allow them to fix anything they find.

bitdefender
pandasoftware
Symantec Security Check << click scan for viruses
RAV Online Virus Scanner << Enter your e-mail address and click on To continue without subscribing
McAfee

Write down anything that can not be fixed.

HijackThis needs to be placed into a permanent folder in order to save backups just in case something goes wrong. Go to Start > My Computer > and double click on C:. Now right click an open area and click New > folder and change the folder name to HJT. Move HijackThis from the desktop into this new folder.

Scan with HijackThis and post the new log as a reply to this thread. Include anything that can not be fixed by the online scans.

When I try to use the memorywatch uninstaller, I get a security warning that won't let me download it. I tried lowering the IE settings and it didn't help. Since I made the first post, she and I worked on the problems more. Maybe we messed something up? I'm going to make a new HJT log so you can operate with current data. She also said the Win MP isn't launching at start up anymore, but I'm almost certain she didn't go through your process to correct the problem. Anyway, here's a fresh log. Thanks–Julie

When I try to use the memorywatch uninstaller, I get a security warning that won't let me download it. I tried lowering the IE settings and it didn't help.

Not to worry you have removed the bad trojan along with many other items. Great job so far. :D

She also said the Win MP isn't launching at start up anymore, but I'm almost certain she didn't go through your process to correct the problem.

Is the MediaPlayer program working correctly?

Please set your computer to show all files.

* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Press Control-Alt-Del to enter the Task Manager.
Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:

?hkdsk.exe
rrup.exe

Exit the Task Manager when finished.

With all other programs and browsers closed, click Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: see here if you don't know how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\Documents and Settings\Catie Stokes\Application Data\rrup.exe

These 2 are tricky as the "?" can be any symbol or letter. Do not delete the valid chkdsk.exe or spoolsv.exe.
C:\WINDOWS\System32\?hkdsk.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\??oolsv.exe

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files (Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Delete Files), be sure to also select delete all offline content.
Empty the Recycle Bin.

Scan with HijackThis and post the new log as a reply to this thread.
?hkdsk.exe
rrup.exe

I couldn't find these. Or these:

C:\Documents and Settings\Catie Stokes\Application Data\rrup.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\?hkdsk.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\??oolsv.exe

Also, when I try to delete all the temp files, I get a message like this and can't delete this file:

"Cannot delete Perflib_Perfdata_4e4:…"

I did delete all the other temp files.

Here's the new HJT log.

alsocom– I just ran AA and SB S&D. AA found Blazefind which I deleted. SB found DSO Exploit, also deleted. Is that affiliated with Peper? I have to go to the airport to pick up another daughter, who, thankfully, doesn't have a computer! Will check in as soon as I return. Thanks so very much! I will definitely donate as soon as I get done with this debacle! Julie

hkdsk.exe
rrup.exe

I couldn't find these. Or these:

C:\Documents and Settings\Catie Stokes\Application Data\rrup.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\?hkdsk.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\??oolsv.exe

They are no longer in your log.

The new log is clean. :D Just a couple of optional items.

Scan with HijackThis and check the following:

You can fix this with HJT, but you will also need to set it not to load in RealPlayer itself to keep it from resetting itself: (1) Start RealOne Player (2) Tools -> Preferences (3) Automatic services in the Categories pane (4) Uncheck all options and then OK This is the item to fix in HJT:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

This one is optional but is not required at startup for the program to run.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

With all other programs and browsers closed, click Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

How is it running?
Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks many bad things from installing on your computer.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place"

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
I will update to SP 2 and download spyguard. I already got the others.

Should I worry about the temp file that wouldn't delete?

Here is my LAST log *hopefully*!

Log still looks good. :) Very nice job.

No need to worry about the temp. file.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the Performance tab, click File System, or press ALT+F.
3. On the Troubleshooting tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
4. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 3, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'
Alan– I have done everything you suggested and her little Toshiba is purring. Now I'll show her how to update programs and send her off protected. Thank you so much! I will donate tomorrow. Julie
