Cool Web Search & Systime.exe

Hello,

Cool Web Search decided to become our home page for a couple of days ago. After 2 days of trying to fix this myself with the help of Spybot Search & Destroy, Spyware Blaster, and CoolWebSearch Shredder (all of which say that my system is clean after scanning) I still have Cool Web Search as my home page. With the help of Merijn's website I scanned with Hijack This and discovered that I had Systime.exe which was a problem, I asked Hijack This to delete it and at last I was able to reset my homepage. I also got rid of a handful of "trusted sites" which weren't.

I have just rebooted after a few hours of offline smugness and to my dismay Cool Web Search is back as my default homepage and won't shift, and after running Hijack This I noticed that systime.exe is back too, although it only shows up in the log file and not in the scan results (unless my eyes have finally given up)?

This is my first attempt at anything like this so please be gentle with my poor post-Christmas mind :D

PS I am really impressed with the number of people that seem to be out there giving up their time to solving these issues (flattery, but sincere!) Thanks in anticipation.

Here's the log.

Hello Neffti , welcome to the TC.

This is what I suggest you do.

Go here and run online scans (all), allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks LDTate.

I ran the online scans TrendMicro HouseCall, Panda ActiveScan, and then eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner in that order (not the order you suggested hope that's okay).

They all picked up and cured a variety of things, and at the end I was just left with something uncurable called "load.exe" which eTrust was unable to cure, but did delete.

There were 5 instances of this, the path was C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files and then:
\load.exe
\CONFLICT.1\load.exe
\CONFLICT.2\load.exe
\CONFLICT.3\load.exe
\CONFLICT.4\load.exe

I then used Spybot as per instructions (having checked for updates) which fixed some red problems (I had to checkmark them individually for them to be solved and couldn't "select all")

I then used Ad-Aware as per instructions which identified and deleted LOTS. I then rebooted and got a new log. To my novice eyes it looks a lot better on the homepage front, but I confess I haven't tried opening my homepage yet for fear of letting the blasted thing in again.

Here's the new log, thank you very much indeed LDTate for all your help.

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D

Happy New Year to you, I will be including you in my "please give this person a good 2005" list!
