I'm trying to help a relative with problems he has been having with his computer.

We have installed and run ad-aware which found around 200 objects it wanted quarantined. This has been done, and the computer rebooted.

One problem that remains is a hijacked browser. The home page is reset to onlygoodsearch.com. My relative also tells me that his internet connection drops out unexpectedly.

A lot of the objects found by ad-aware were coolwebsearch, so I thought it would be wise to ask for advice in this forum. The hjt log is attached. I'd be grateful for any assistance.

Happy Christmas.

Thankyou very much for the very quick reply. I have done as you requested, and a new hjt log is attached. Two points: 1. I'm afraid I don't know how to determine my IP address, so I can't answer that question. 2. On my first attempt to run in safe mod, I must have mistimed my pressing of F8 because Windows started normally. On the second attempt safemode ran fine. Many thanks again for your help. LDTate, Thankyou again for the reply. Despite tyhe referenve to winlogon.exe in the 04 line of hjt, no such process was running when I looked for it in the hjt open process manager. Further, it did not exist in the windows\inetem subdirectory. I checked the entry in hjt, and rebooted. The latest log is attached below. The offending entry appears to have gone. Good job distraught,

Log looks good :D  How is it running any issues?

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
All seems to be OK :) I will take your advice on preventative measures. Thankyou very much for your kind assistance. May Santa be generous to you. (No longer) distraught.
