I am really baffled by this problem and could sure use some help. I am not a newbie when it comes to solving comp issues;but this problem has me going around in circles and I'm at my wits end. Microsoft .. as usual, was no help.

My comp is plagued by crashes .. several a day with no apparent reason. I run AVG 7.0 .. Pestpatrol .. Spybot .. Ad-Aware SE and Process Guard and they have all turned up nothing. I have run online virus checkers at Symantec and Trend Micro with no results. I am truly frustrated and never know when the next mouse click, letter on the keyboard or scroll to the bottom of the page will be the last. I came across an article in PC World, describing Hijack this and this site and I am hoping someone here can shed some light and sterr me in the right direction … TIA

Here's the log file generated by HJT …

Hello Onth3edge, welcome to the forum

It's not a good idea to run 2 anti-virus programs at the same time.
Grisoft and Norton

I suggest you do this:

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these.

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"
Don't worry about the 016's, they'll come back if needed.

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Open C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE <–Delete File

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Hello again LDTate .. did as you suggested, here's the new log file; Also, I don't run two AV's at the same time, Norton's was uninstalled ( system hog ) however I still use the Go Back and Systemworks Premiere w/o the anti-virus.

Thanks fort all of your help ..
After making the suggested changes posted above, I'm now plagued by a new problem. Whenever I use IE ( mostly use FireFox ) I get an error message that " module mshtml.dll has caused an unknown problem" and the browser closes … anyone have any ideas? This happens a couple of times a session.

mshtml.dll has caused an unknown problem

Try to visit windows updates. Let me know if that doesn't work. Maybe need to download mshtml.dll.

I suggest you do this:

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

Before restart, Empty Recycle Bin.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
First off want to thank you for your continued assistance .. much appreciated.

Once again ran Hijack This as per your instructions and removed the two items mentioned above.
Did as you suggested; however comp is up to date with Microsoft updates .. none available
I wasn't able to install mshtml.dll as I run SP2 and only downloads listed are for SP1 .. I uninstalled SP2 and thenattempted to install fix; but received the : You don't need this file" message

I attempted a couple other fixes .. I ran system file checker ( sfc /scannow ) all protected files were in place .. I also performed a check on the ie.inf file and re-installed … Still getting the occasional mshtml.dll error ..

Here's my latest log as per your request …

Here's a link to Microsoft about mshtml.dll. I don't have a answer for the error.

Log looks good :D

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
Thanks for all of your help LDTate, I will read the Microsoft article and I will also check out the proggies you mentioned .. I do use AV ( AVG Pro 7.0) and a firewall ( Sygate Pro 5.5 ) and run Ad-Aware SE & Spybot 1.3 religously. I have previously disabled System Restore and make disc backups. I also use a program called WinRescue XP to make back ups and keep things in order. In todays world you can never be too safe. Once again, thank you for all of your help .. I'll be signing up for those classes to learn more .. :) Onth3edge

I have previously disabled System Restore

It's not disabled now is it? I'd create a new restore point and enable it.

Once again, thank you for all of your help .. I'll be signing up for those classes to learn more ..

You're more then welcome. Looking forword to seeing you as part of the team :D
