The problems with my PC include: pop-up windows coming up all with CiD: at top of window tab, redirecting to different websites when clicking on links or directly typing in addresses, pages not loading, advertisement audio coming through speakers when no apparent window is open, CPU usage bouncing from 5% to 99% when no programs are open, computer completely freezing so I have to manually shut down. I have both Ad-Aware and EZ Trust Anti-virus and Pest Patrol running, but they don't seem to be stopping these problems. Can someone help? Here is my Hijack This log:

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!
Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

PLEASE PRINT THESE INSTRUCTIONS OUT OR SAVE/COPY THEM TO YOUR DESKTOP
since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Although NewDotNet does not claim to be spyware, it has been associated with computer instability in certain situations. Both SaveNow and NewDotNet have been linked for computer instability according to the MS Knowledge Base Article 302463.

For more information, please see the following:

What is SaveNow and/or New.Net?
Foistware: New Net, Inc. (NewDotNet) DLL

I recommend that you remove NewDotNet .
=======================================================================

To uninstall the New.Net or NewDotNet:
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight New.Net or NewDotNet, click Remove.
  • Close the Add or Remove Programs and the Control Panel windows.
If it is not listed, follow these instructions:
  • From a computer that has Internet access, click on
    NewDotNet Removal
  • If you get "the page cannot be displayed" when clicking on the removal link, you may have winhelp's mvps hosts file installed, as www.newdotnet.com <http://www.newdotnet.com> is a blocked site
  • Download and save uninstall6_90.exe (New.Net/Support/Uninstall exe file) to the Desktop.
  • Go to the Desktop and double-click on uninstall6_90.exe
  • Click on the OK button.
  • After removal, reboot.

___________________________________________

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.sub.../Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingc.../Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Next:
Click Start> Run> type in CMD tap enter key
Copy/Paste: ipconfig /flushdns

Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.

If you have internet connection problems do this:

Please go to Start -> Control Panel, and choose Network Connections.
Then right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and left click on properties.
Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically. Click OK twice, and restart your computer.

Jotti could not even scan, giving the message, "The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file". Same for Virus Total. HJT did not list the line you wanted checked, so nothing was fixed there. And, I didn't have to reboot after NO LOP because it said there were no infected files found. Hopefully this is all good news...

Did you happen to find any of the programs to remove that I mentioned ? Or any others you didn't recognize ?

Such as :
CiD Help
CiD Manager
Messenger plus or messenger plus and client
Download Plugin for Internet Explorer
Bitdownload
Zone Media
WinZix
Search Plugin
Bitgrabber
BitRol
Netpumper

You need to update SunJava for security reasons.
Updating Java:
Download the latest version of
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1... allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the Posted Image icon next to it.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Let's get one more quick scan to be sure.

1. Download Combo fix from one of these locations.
http://www.techsuppo...Bs/ComboFix.exe
http://download.blee...Bs/ComboFix.exe

combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

The only programs I found to remove were CiD Help and WinZix. The rest looked ok. I have had problems downloading some of the programs, but finally got them and ran them. FixWareout reuns everytime I reboot - should this be happening? EZ Firewall Alert tells me that "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services is trying to act as a server" and "CA Antivirus System Tray Application is trying to access the internet". Do you know if I should be allowing or denying these? My CPU Usage still jumps from 2% to 85% within seconds, but not sure if that is an issue or not. The internet is working great, though! No pop-up windows or redirecting and the PC hasn't frozen since. Here are the logs:

Also, I heard that if you use any Peer to Peer file sharing program, Peer Guardian is a great way to protect your PC. Is this true and would it help prevent these problems from arising again?

Lets try and fix a few things you don't need running at start up . These programs will still run when you need or ask them to. This may help with cPU spiking to 85%.

____________________________
You have QuickTime running at Startup. This is QuickTime's system tray icon and not necessary for the program to function properly. It is considered to be a resource hog.
You will still be able to start it manually if you need it. You can fix this with HijackThis, but you will need to change the setting in QuickTime
Player itself to keep it from resetting itself.. This is the item to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\\..\\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\\Program Files\\QuickTime\\qttask.exe" -atboottime

______________________________
You have iTunesHelper.exe running at Startup. iTunesHelper.exe is a process belonging to Itunes MP3 streaming tool
by Apple which allows you to play MP3's. This process speeds up iTunes when it starts, and the program also monitors
for connected iPod devices. This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it.
It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis.
This is the item to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\\..\\Run: [iTunesHelper] C:\\Program Files\\iTunes\\iTunesHelper.exe
______________________________
You have RealPlayer running at Startup. This is RealPlayer's autoupdate program and is not necessary for the program to function properly.
It is considered to be a resource hog. You will still be able to start it manually if you need it. You can fix this with HijackThis, but you will
need to change the setting in RealPlayer itself to keep it from resetting itself.. This is the item to fix in HijackThis:

O4 = HKLM\\..\\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Real\\Update_OB\\realsched.exe" = osboot
_____________________________

You may also have HJT fix this line.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
You can go to HP.com and check for any updates you may need manually if you like.

Lets get another scan to be sure nothing is hiding.

Download and install CCleaner from here

If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for Cookies is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Set Cookie Retention.
Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
  • Reset Temp File Removal for Regular Use.
Click on the Options block on the left. Select the Advanced button.
Check "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".

Now run the program and click on Run Cleaner
( Do not use the Issues block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky).

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner
Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner
You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK

Now under select a target to scan select My Computer

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.

Now click on the Save as Text button:

Save the file to your desktop.

Copy and paste that information in your next post.

In your next reply I would like to see:
  • A new HJT log
  • The report from Kasperskys
  • Let me know if Fixwareout continues to run @ startup

The help you receive here is free. If you wish to show your appreciation, then you may donate to help keep us online.

Again, thanks so much for your help and advice. I actually have to leave for work, so I won't be back on my PC until after 5:00. I'll work through everything then and get back to you.

Yup - Fixwareout doesn't run at startup anymore - thanks. The Kaspersky's log, however, doesn't look too promising. Sorry about the delay in response - we had a wicked storm that shut down my power for a while. Here's the latest:

Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\music\winzix-2.0-setup-0210.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\uninstall6_90.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\gsda.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\kdcfk.ren
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\ZLT00029.TMP

  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
*If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately, you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine, choose Yes.
  • Close OTMoveIt
**If a reboot was necessary or you needed to Exit before posting the log, you will find a copy of the log at the root of the drive where OTMoveIt is installed, usually at :
C:\\_OTMoveIt\\MovedFiles\\********_******.log
(where "********_******" is the "date_time")

Looks as if your version of winzix was infected from the get go. Did you install this program ?
If so I would consider removing it through add remove programs and use something like win zip or winrars. Paid version.

I didn't install WinZix, but my boyfriend may have since we both use the computer. I'll let him know about win zip and winrars. I already removed it from add/remove programs because it was on the list you originally had me look for. Thanks for the advice! CPU Usage is much better - now it only jumps from 2% to 19% while idle. Everything seems to be running smooth. Here goes:
