To Whom It May Concern & Interest! I am new to this site and not really sure about how it operates. A very good friend of mine put me onto this webpage. Have tried the following to get rid of the desktop pop-up " am I exe or html" which when I exit I get a another box saying; IE Exploit by Cyber_flash (aka vengy!); attempted to remove via : Spybot, Spyblaster,Ad-Aware Professional SE, which did not eliminate it;and have in place zonelab zonealarm firewall and Norton Anti-virus with host OS W2k. Would appreciate help in getting rid of it…Ghostingeagle1
Hello ghostingeagle1, Welcome to TomCoyote Forum. Start you off with a question. Do you know what this is?
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\funny joke.exe
O4 - Global Startup: funny joke.exe
If not, it could be someones idea of a joke on you, and we will remove it. Please note it looks to be set to run at every start up.

This Process will remove that item, first open your Task Manager, look in Processes. If you see funny joke.exe, end process on it.

Scan with HijackThis and check each of these lines:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…/search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com
O4 - Global Startup: funny joke.exe

Close all browser windows and programs and choose "Fix Checked"

Open Windows Explorer (Windows key+e), drill down and delete the following file:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\
funny joke.exe >>> file only

Clean like this: Start, Run then type "cleanmgr" without the quotes, allow windows to remove anything it locates. Empty the recycle bin and reboot the computer. Post a new log using Add Reply to stay in this same thread. We will see what good that did.

Thanks…pskelley

Certainly appreciate quick turn around with a solution. Prior to your email with solutions,I identified 2 users with similar problems to mine. Made HardCopies of their logs as well as mine ,then found funnyjoke.exe;well,I reran Ad-Aware and it finally found it;also installed SpySweeper which identified it. So followed what those programs said to do. Recieved email with solutions and directives which were carried out to be certain that funny.exe was nuked and as such it is gone. Merry Christmas to The Tom Coyote Forum and the rest of your mob! A deep heartfelt thanks to PSKelly. Here is the new log !

Hi hostingeagle1, That sounds great, won't have to use HJT to remove them. You did miss one of the "RedSwoosh" lines, an R1, there were three lines, and the middle one is still there.

Scan with HijackThis and check this line item:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

Close all browser windows and click on "Fix Checked"

Notice I left the Yahoo home page, nothing wrong with that if you use it.

Once this is done, you are clean, here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss and ChrisRLG to help you stay that way:

http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=3051
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://www.cjwd.demon.co.uk/compsafetyonline.html

Here are tutorials, you will see both programs mentioned again and again in the above links. It is important that these programs are configured and updated as in the instructions for maximum efficiency:
Ad-aware:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind…showtutorial=48
Spybot:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind…showtutorial=43

I also believe SpywareBlaster, SpywardGuard and IE-Spyad are a must with the dangers online now.

Thanks…pskelley
