Can't Get Rid Of Pop-ups On Ie, Windows Xp

I'm running Windows XP and having trouble w/ multiple pop up ads, spyware and/or Trojan(s) on Internet Explorer. I scanned w/ Spybot, Ad-Aware SE and CW Shredder on many occasions and can't seem to clear it up–seems like it's reinstalling itself on reboot?.

Ad-Aware SE scan resulted in a message saying "cannot remove the following b/c in use" (this is not an exhaustive list, just a few of the items):

C:\Program Files\cxtpls\cxtpls.dll
C:\Program Files\cxtpls\Proxystub.dll
C:\Program Files\cxtpls\ace.dll
C:\Program Files\cxtpls\atl.dll
C:\Program Files\cxtpls\AI-28-11-2004.log
C:\Program Files\cxtpls\libexpat.dll

Here is my hijackthis log (run after Spybot, Ad-Aware SE scans and then reboot):

Could someone please take a look and recommend a fix if needed? Thank you!

Hello TDR, welcome to the TC Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT). You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT. The reason we do this is Hijackthis creates backup files just in case you'd need to restore one and we'll be cleaning out the temp files. Do the above before doing this: Oepn HiJackThis Click Config> Click Misc Tools> Click Delete a File on reboot Go to where these are listed: C:\Program Files\cxtpls\cxtpls.dll C:\Program Files\cxtpls\Proxystub.dll C:\Program Files\cxtpls\ace.dll C:\Program Files\cxtpls\atl.dll C:\Program Files\cxtpls\AI-28-11-2004.log C:\Program Files\cxtpls\libexpat.dll Reboot and post a new HijackThis log
Hi LDTate,

Thanks very much for your prompt response and helpful advice. I followed your instructions and as far as I can tell, the problem is solved. After the fix, I scanned with AdAware with no problems.

Again, thank you very much and have a great holiday season.

Here is my new Hijack This log, let me know if I should remove anything else:

This is what I suggest you do.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run online scans (all), allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and Rescan with HJT and post a new log here.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi LDTate, thanks for the previous reply. I followed the steps you recommended and here are the results:

HouseClean Scan:

resulted in the following "non-cleanable" items (which I deleted):

Troj Apropo.C located in: C:\Documents and Settings\TD\local settings\temp\~apropos)\ph.exe

Troj Apropo.C–same as above but in \Jen\local settings

Troj Agent.AMO located in: C:\System Volume Information\-restore{B37680B2-BA0A-4E5D-BF30-83E44C5878624}\RP400\A0012567.exe

Troj Apropo.C —same as above but RP451\A0021281.exe

Troj Apropo.C —same as above but RP456\A0021482.exe

Troj Apropo.C —same as above but RP460\A0021558.exe

Troj Apropo.C —same as above but RP463\A0021558.exe

Troj Small.FY located in: C:\Windows\System 32\julie.exe

BAT SMTPEXEC.A located in: C:\Windows\System 32\0

Troj Apropo.C located in C:\Windows\System 32\rtvo_update_uninstall.exe

CA E-Trust Scan:

Resulted in the following "cannot cure" but I deleted:

track[1].htm HTML.MHTML.REDIR.exploit located in: C:\Documents and Settings\TD\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\6CL70x8JA\

IFO1.exe Win32.startpage.36! downloader located in: C:\Windows System 32\

Panda Active Scan: was clean

I then rebooted and performed another HouseClean Scan, which resulted in the following "non-cleanable"

Troj Apropo.C located in same as above… RP463\A0023709.exe

Troj Small.Fy located in same as above…RP463\A0023710.exe

I then scanned with Spybot and removed the selected RED entries.

I then scanned with AD-Aware and upon full scan got the message, the following cannot be removed:

C:\Program Files\Cxtpls\ace.dll

C:\Program Files\Cxtpls\ace.dll

C:\Program Files\cxtpls\AI-05-12-2004.log

C:\Program Files\Cxtpls\atl.dll

C:\Program Files\Cxtpls\cxtpls.exe

C:\Program Files\Cxtpls\libexpat.dll

I then emptied my recycle bin, rebooted and rescanned with HJT and here is the new log. Please advise, it seems as if I can't get rid of this crap!!

Thanks a lot, TD

Thanks LDTate, Here's what it found: The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file
An instructor hipped me to the fact these things sometimes hide in the system restore, and somehow come back from the dead when you reboot after deleting them. I was able to get rid of some problems by deleting system restores, removing the offenders via spyware, creating a new system restore, and then rebooting. DO NOT do this unless you get confirmation from others who are far more experienced than I, to insure it is appropriate. I did it out of desperation and it worked…for me. Please check with others, I am less than skilled. Also, I have found several things here and there that could not be removed because they were "in use by the system" and the like. To ditch them, including a pernicious popup program called Attune from Aveo,.com (that had an annoying bellhop character and I hate bellhops), I had to locate all the instances of Attune (and it scattered them to the tune of about a dozen, open and zipped, all through the system), boot to a command line in safe mode, and employ 15 year old DOS skills to remove them. AS ABOVE, get several other confirmations prior to doing this. It worked for me but I may have just as likely blundered into doing something right as consciously doing the right steps.

LDTate is assisting you - please ignor ALL posters that are not part of our team.
I suggest you do this:

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ntlsapi] C:\WINDOWS\System32\ntlsapi.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Open C:\WINDOWS\System32\ntlsapi.exe <–Delete File

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
LDTate,

Thanks again for your helpful advice. I wasn't able to find C:\WINDOWS\System32\ntlsapi.exe after HJT scan and reboot in Safe Mode (even after a search of all files and hidden files in "System 32")

However, I followed the rest of your instructions and here is my new log:

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
Thanks LDTate, Everything seems to running just fine. Again, I really appreciate your assistance. Have a happy and safe holiday season. I'll be sure to make a donation to this site. TDR
