My computer had become almost inoperable with all the pop ups. I have been running Adaware and Spybot and Norton Antivirus. At some point this week, these programs detected the ImIServer IEPlugin (wupdt.exe, systb.dll), 2nd Thought, Winnet, Wild Tangent, Tyavul, Farmmext, ancompat.tlb, cxtpls_loader.exe, and BTGrab. I have worked through all the recommended fixes for these, but still detect and can't completely delete the cxtpls_loader.exe and BTGrab.dll.

The computer is working better, but pop ups are still occuring frequently. I see Weatherbug in the Hijack This log, which I also want to remove. Please help me.

Here is my Hijack This log:

Hello jabc ,welcome to the forum.

Important: Do this before any fix.

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

The reason we do this is Hijackthis creates backup files just in case you'd need to restore one and we'll be cleaning out the temp files.

After the above:

This is what I suggest you do.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run online scans (all), allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks for your quick reply. I have done some of the things you recommended, but the Trend Micro House Call, e-Trust Antivirus web scan, and the Panda scan all failed to download properly. I read their FAQs and disabled my Norton antivirus and Firewall, but still no luck. I even tried right clicking on the download to Save Target As, but I could only get inoperable htm files. Any ideas?

The CS Shredder downloaded and ran and found no infection.

I also found out that the Viewpoint toolbar, that is associated with SBC Yahoo! DSL, can be a problem, so I uninstalled that. I have deleted all Temporary Internet files (c:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files) and my recycle bin. (Do I need to delete the folders and files in c:\Windows\Temp, as well?) I ran the most current versions of Spybot and Adaware in both Safe Mode and in normal mode. Both found some problem items each time they ran.

I am running my system in Selective Start-up, and I unchecked some of the perpetrators that are listed there. I have disabled my System Restore. After the last Spybot and Adaware scans, I rebooted. I am still seeing error messges like:

Explorer has caused an error in WMPDXM.dll (I have run the regsvr 32 fixes for that, but it keeps coming up.)
Explorer has caused a General Protection Fault in module KRNL.385.exe
Errors mentioning wupdt

My computer is working faster, but I am still getting a lot of pop ups.

Here is the Hijack This log file (I see tyavul and Weatherbug in there):

Thanks,

jabc

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Search for and delete these files if listed:
c:\windows\system\tyavul.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\D3DMON13.EXE

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
OK, it's been awhile, because my system crashed or just got so log jammed that I could not operate anything. I reloaded Windows ME and had to uninstall my Norton antivirus and firewall, and they haven't been reloaded yet, as I am getting an error message that the antivirus can't complete installation. I am operating in Selective Start-up and my display has been grainy. I have tried to reset it in Control Panel, Display Properties, but it is out of whack.

Now that I am back in operation, at least for today, I tried to follow your last instructions for deletions, and after that, here is my most recent Hijack This log:

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\TD_0001.DIR\HIJACKTHIS.EXE

You have your HijackThis in a temp folder. If you don't move it, you'll lose it.

After the above;

I suggest you do this:

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these.

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

1. Open My Computer
2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files (If listed)
7. Click OK and windows will comply.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
OK, I had created the HiJack folder in Program files in my C Drive but was using the button on your site to run it. I think I did this correctly this time, as I opened the ".exe" file in my own folder this time. Thanks for your patience with this novice.

I followed your other instructions to open My Computer and ran the Disk Cleanup, and have run the HiJack This again and have the log for you. I am still running in Selective Startup. When I rebooted, I am still getting the message to select Normal or Safe Mode, etc. I am still getting an error message for my monitor's settings. Everything looks tall and thin. And, when I try to open the Norton antivirus, I am still getting a Symantec Integrator message saying "it could not initialilze the current frame class. Please make sure you did not directly run the integrator." I can only run Live Update a scan from my firewall, not my regular antivirus. AT least the computer is responding in some fashion!

I am not seeing many of the problematic files I had been seeing! Here is the log:

I am still getting the message to select Normal or Safe Mode, etc.

Reboot and select Normal.

"copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment
I rebooted and selected Normal. My computer is less gummed up, as I am getting quicker reaction time. But, when going on the internet, I still get pop ups that when I try to close them, several more pop up, which is annoying. I got my Display Properties set back to 1024 x 768, and it looks normal again.

Go to Google.com select More> move down to Google Toolbar. Agree to the Terms but, select Disable Advanced Features. Install Google Toolbar with popup stopper. See if this stops the pop-ups
I added the Google toolbar and the popups are about gone. I have had to reinstall all of my Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and Power Point) as they were not working. I am still having some problems with my Norton Antivirus, as it will only work through my Firewall, but I finally got the Live Update to complete. I ran Ad-Aware SE Personal and now it only finds a bunch of things called IECache. I quarantine and delete them, but they will be back everytime I run Ad-Aware. The graphics that load with that program looks very grainy, so I'm thinking about uninstalling it and reinstalling it. I got a clear Spybot scan.

I am still running in Selective Start-up. Do you recommending staying in that, or going back to the full start-up mode? Also, my Windows set-up did not complete, but I have tried it several times and get the same error message. I have tried the Windows Install Clean-up, as well, but get the same message.

Thanks for ALL your help so far. My computer is running better, but I still think it has some problems, just not sure what they are.

You need to update your version of HijackThis. Open HJT> Config> Misc Tools> Check for update online. If that doesn't work, download it from my signature and remove the hijackThis.exe you have now.

Also please keep your HijackThis in it's own folder like you have it now.

I would also like you to do this:
Start> Run> type in Msconfig tap enter and list everything in the Startup.
I updated my version of HJT to 1.99.1 Thanks for the tip. I had not noticed Config and Misc tools to get to the update area. The log is below.

I am assuming you meant to select Normal Start-up when you stated to "List everything in the startup (Start> Run> msconfig)." Then, I rebooted as directed by the computer message and I got an error message:

DdHelp has caused an error in GDI.EXE. Ddhelp will now close.

After closing that message, I was back to the black screen asking if I wanted Normal or Safe Mode, so I selected Normal.

Also, I received a message about my display settings, so now I am in 1024x768
AND "high color" and everything, including Ad-Aware graphics, looks normal again!

I just noticed that I am running Internet Explorer v5.50, even though I have tried to update to v6.0. I guess that is what the error message about that is telling me.

Here is the HJT log. Let me know if you see anything I need to remove.

Error:
Ddhelp has caused an error in GDI.EXE.

Translation:
Both programs referenced are graphics-related. Ddhelp.exe is a component of Microsoft’s DirectX multimedia technology, which is used by almost every aspect of Windows. GDI.exe is the Graphic Device Inter-face; it handles low-level graphics chores that are integral to Windows’ operation, such as moving windows to the foreground or background.

Solution:
Update your video card’s driver. Drivers let hardware communicate with Windows, and installing the latest one available from the manufacturer of your video card resolves compatibility problems. Because this error message references a DirectX component, installing the latest version of DirectX that’s compatible with the OS also might help. Find downloads and installation instructions at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx.

I suggest you do this:

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these.

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [MOSearch] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\SYSTEM\MOSEARCH\BIN\MOSEARCH.EXE

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment
I downloaded the Microsoft DirectX 9.0. It took two tries, but I got it installed.

I deleted the Mosearch.exe file with HJT and when I went to the Recycle Bin, there was nothing there to delete. The only problem is that I could not seem to use HJT version 1.99.1 unless it was located in a temporary file, even though for the last run I was able to do that. I tried upgrading HJT this again and saved it to my own file (not a temp file), but it wouldn't work. So the HJT that I used to delete the Mosearch.exe file was version 1.99.0 and the log is below. My computer is working much better now - much faster reaction time.
