Looking for the outcome? Ask AI

Yes, I use Earthlink - started with Mindspring. Why? I have noticed Spybot stopping the doubleclick somethingorother from their main site but I didn't think that was a big thing. Just say no, and go!

Ran stinger in safe mode - found nothing.

HJT log follows. What are you looking for? Could the search function file just be corrupted?

As always, awaiting your reply

Ok for the secong log please scan with hijackthis and put a chek beside these lines and choose FIX.. R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = file://C:/HP/REGION/start.html R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = file://C:/HP/REGION/start.html Also, I would advise that anyone that uses the system be set up under a limited account. No onhe should use admin account unless they are loading some software from a know site. Post a new log please. How is it running?
Greetings -

Still can't log into this forum on infected computer. Still cant' run search all files function.

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

Above line is still in hjt log. I can delete it but it keeps returning after boot.

Used explorer to search folders where previously deleted "bad" files were found and spent time looking up each .exe on web. Looked at files created within 4 minutes of when I first got on web when things were flashing and popping up sooooooooooooooooo fast.

Here's what I found.

c:\windows\system32\
activeds.exe - an opaserv virus
wintsvsu.exe —- assoc with PurityScan mess
atkctrs8.exe - some kind of bad guy don;t know what
a bunch of .dll and .dat files

c:\windows\temp\
addit.exe
all_files9.exe
buddy.exe - a known part of peper virus

c:\documents and settings\owner\application data\tvmcwrd.dll - no idea what this is

c:\documents and settings\owner\local settings\temp\
!update.exe - no idea what is
f.dll - ditto
~df9d09.tmp
readme.txt
where the readme file when edited with Notepad says
sucess=1

So, here is the hjt log from main acct first followed by 2nd acct. I will use your recomendations re limited accts and will forward info to friend. What exactly will this do to prevent this kind of mess?

Can I delete ANYTHING in the temp folder w/o hard to system?

Well, you must have gone somewhere for Thanksgiving, hope it was a good one. I have forged on. The short story is that I fixed everything then it all came back again. Here's the long story. (#1)Refering to the forum entry before this one and the files I found manually (and the folders they are in), I created my own quarentine area and moved into it these files: addit.exe all_files9.exe buddy.exe - a known part of peper virus Ran hjt, deleted the R3 key and rebooted. R3 key did not return, all other problems remained the same. (#2)Next, moved these files to quarentine. !update.exe - no idea what is f.dll - ditto ~df9d09.tmp readme.txt Again, ran htj - R3 key still not back in registry. Rebooted, etc. Now, when trying to use system search, all files and folders option, it still locks up but will close using the red x in upper right corner rather than having to ctrl-alt-del out of it. System is running, starting and shutting down much faster. Also, could log into this forum. We are on a roll! (#3)Feeling real good about things so moved the next batch. activeds.exe - an opaserv virus wintsvsu.exe —- assoc with PurityScan mess atkctrs8.exe - some kind of bad guy don;t know what along with atkcfrs8.exe cic90811.exe from same folder, created same time Ran hjt, r3 entry still not in so rebooted. Everything worked! Still could log into this forum, and look at other forums. System search let me look for ANYTHING! Didn't hang up. Worked just fine. Looked for everything else that was created at the same time. Found these: c:\windows\woinstall.exe c:\windows\system32\exzopstub.exe (#4)and after researching them on internet, decided they were part spyware so I moved them too. Checked hjt, R3 entry still not there. Rebooted and noticed that could not get into any forum from a google search so then tried to do system search all files and it locked up, just like before. Bummer! Downloaded swatit and ran it. It found something in the other account about hP games do I deleted it also. Did not change any of the regular problems. So, moved last 2 files back where they were, check hjt, R3 still not there, rebooted. System reverted back to where we were after step 2. At this point, I am giving up and must wait it out until you return. Is there anyone else that can continue this? Whatever is still left in there must be very well buried or could it be in a .dll? Please return and help. I am stuck!
Sorry been gone for a few days.

Please do a virus scan under each user

Panda http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co…n_principal.htm

Bitdefender http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/Msie/index.php

Then check your add/remove programs and look for Bargain Buddys and other odd programs and remove.

Then scan with Adaware and post a new log.

If any of your anti spyware programs ask you if they should allow a change through the process click on yes.
Glad to hear from you. My all day assignment yielded results. I ran the pandascan then bit scan under the main account. Bit scan found things but said disinfection failed.

Switched accounts. This was the first time to go in the internet via this account and it is hijacked. It wouldn't go to panda and instead sent me to some game site. Ran bit scan and got the results that follow. It found the same bad guys and had a few more lines in it. I edited out the TONS of references to what AdAware and Spybot had quarrentined. The hjt log for the main account follows. As I'm thinking about this, I think you will want a hjt for the second account so I will post that as another entry.

In case the cleanup of this is not as simple as just deleting the bad files, I won't do anything till you look at this.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!

Reread previous message. Panda didn't find a thing, neither did AdAware.

Log file from bit scan from both account almost equal. I sent the one from the second acct since it had more than that from the first.

HJT log from second acct follows. I noticed that the R3 line is back in both!

1. Please download Stinger and save it to your desktop

2. Double-click on the stinger.exe file and open the tool

3. Choose your entire hard drive to scan.

4. Choose Scan Now

5. Stinger will fix anything that it finds

6. Click the File menu and select Save report to file

7. Post the log file results here in this thread.
I had already run Stinger on 11-23 but I downloaded it again, in case it had been updated. Ran it again and it found nothing, just like before. I am just fine with manually deleting these targeted files and doing a hjt fix if that would clean this up. I have located the file called "O", the one that has the backdoor thing in it. There is a file "o" and an "o.bat". "o" is labeled "file" and is 1kb big. "o.bat is an ms-dos batch file 1kb big. All the other files I can find. Next?
Well, I have deleted all suspect files and cleaned up things. I can use system search for all files and folders and things appear to be going well. At this point, I am ready for SP2 upgrade then to return this beast to its rightfull owner. I thank you for your help - greatly!
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
