Dear All,

I'm hoping you can help. A new dialler has appeared called "Happy" and also an icon on my desktop called "CLICK ME". I have also just received a phone bill with overseas calls to a country (Chilie) where I have never called so can only think that someone has infected my machine. I enclose the log in the hope that someone can help me.

Many thanks:

Hi Nick,

1. Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis". Now you have C:\HJT\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there, and run it from there in the future ;)

2. Go to Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs and uninstall SpyKiller. (It's a bad program, see this page: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm )

3. Now check these in HijackThis:

O16 - DPF: {1C78AB3F-A857-482E-80C0-3A1E5238A565} - file://C:\install.cab

4. Close all other windows and browsers, and hit Fix Checked.

5. Reboot, make a new HijackThis log, and post it here.
Dear Hans,

Thank you so much. I can't thank you enough! That has solved the problem straight away. I have enclosed the hijack this log as requested though. I'm not sure what the dialler/icon actually did - maybe it made me dial a different number without me knowing it? Anyway, problem sorted now thank goodness because I was really getting frustrated with it all.

Kind regards,
Nick.

Well done, that's a clean log now :)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers real-time protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free Google toolbar to help stop pop up windows. NOTE: If you’re already using the popupblocker which is integrated with ServicePack 2, you don’t need to get the Google Toolbar, the popupblocker from IE is very good!
I also suggest that you delete your Temp folders regularly. Use CleanUp! to do this automatically for you!
