I hope I am doing this right. I have windows XP and somehow went to a website that said they had a birthday card for my son (it actually was his birthday this week, which is the only reason I went there). Ever since then my home page is wacky "cool web site" and I have a whole bunch of junk I can't get rid of. Browser is wierd. Porn. etc… I am a very casual (amateur) internet user and found this web site via Kim Komando. I would appreciate ANY help anyone can give with this problem. Thanks in advance!!

Please download and run CWShredder. Make sure that all browser windows are closed with the exception of Cwshredder and choose FIX.

Then scan agfain with hijackthjis and put a check beside these lines and choose FIX.

You can also put a check beside all of the 016 lines.

Then while still in safe mode please delete these files.

Please do an online scan,

Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Reboot and post a new HiJackThis log.

Hi!

Thanks for replying so fast. In the meantime I had downloaded spybot and fixed a bunch of stuff that they recommended in the scan. I think I checked everything that you recommended. I also ran the CSWShredder you recommended. I also rebooted after the fix.

They only thing I'm not sure about is "SAFE MODE" and how to delete the files you recommended.

After checking everything you told me to I still have the wierdo stuff going on: wrong homepage CWC. etc

I'll check back in a little while after I put the kids to bed. Is there anyway my computer will be normal again?

I had another chance to run hijack this and make sure I checked everything you selected. This is my new log. I no longer go to the CW web site but now it says about:com or something like that. Still have the wierdo spy ware screensave that i HATE! It just freaks me out. Here's the posting and THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Your doing a good job :thumbup:

Please boot to safe mode (tap f8 while bios loads) the scan again with hijackthis and put a check beside these lines and choose FIX

Siggyx, This is my latest log. I'm not sure if I know how to get in SAFE mode. When does the BIOS load on re-boot? I hit F8 at the very start of reboot when all this writing goes flying by and I got a screen asking me what I wanted to boot off of (floppy, cd-rom, etc.) If this is the place to hit F8 what do I want to boot off of? Or is BIOS loading in a different place? Also, how can I be SURE I am in SAFE mode? Sorry to be a pain, but I just want to make sure before I delete those last 2 folders/files (WIN COMM.exe and WEB_REBATES). I tried deleted WEB_Rebates and it was "copy-protected or in use" Thanks again for all your help! You guys are really great!!! Siggyx, I figured out how to get in SAFE mode! I did everything you recommended and this is my lates log file. The only thing wierd now is I have no "home page" When I launch internet explorer it gives me http:/// I think I am close to being back to normal! Can you give me any ideas on spam filters, and/or other protections I may need. Right now I only have this computer with XP on a dial-up connection. I've ordered the new MAC-G5 and will have that on a hi-speed DSL. Are Macs as susceptible to virus/spyware attacks. Last but not least. Do you have a paypal account? I would like to send you a little something as a small token of my appreciation for your help with this! I am going to go back and paypal the spybot & hijack this guys. I was afraid to go anyware with a password until I got this problem fixed. Just some minor cleaning left.

Please scan with hijackthis and put a check beside these lines and choose fix.

You should be able to set your home page by follwong the directions below.

Click on Tools>Internet Options> a box wil open. Then make sure the general tab is clicked. The you can click on Use current if you want the current page you are viewing to be your home page.

TIPS ON STAYING CLEAN.

  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
