hi lukelee

You are running hijackthis from a temporary directory which is not a good idea as backups may be lost on reboot.

Open 'My Computer', then double-click to open C:\ (or the drive letter that your Windows is installed)
In the menu bar, click File–>New–>Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis". Now you have C:\HJT\ or C:\HijackThis\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there.

Then do an online virus scan here

Then download CWShredder from here, run it and let it fix what it finds.

Run hijackthis again and make sure all browsers and windows are closed, including this one. Put a check against the following and click 'fix checked'

please note that some entries may be missing after running CWShredder and the scan

Hi lukelee

You now have two versions of hijackthis. You are running it from inside the zip file, extract it into a permanent folder which you can create as described in my first post.

Can you boot into safe mode and then bring up task manager Ctrl-Alt-Del. End this process if it is running

system.exe <– please note, system.exe NOT System

Then run hijackthis again and fix the following in the same way that you did before

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [System32] C:\WINDOWS\system.exe

Then find and delete this file

C:\WINDOWS\system.exe

Reboot and post a fresh hijack log for review
Hi
I did as you suggested. However, I couldnt find c:\windows\system.exe
Also system.exe wasnt running in the task manager.

Hi lukelee

Sorry it has been a couple of days, I've not been well, but all better now! ;) Your log looks fine…. happy surfing!

Here are some suggestions to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future. I strongly recommend installing the following :

Spyware Blaster - It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
Spyware Guard - It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
IE-Spyad - IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
I also recommend reading this article written by Tony Klein How did I get infected in the first place
