Welcome to the forum.

The key to fixing this hijacker is posting a fresh HJT log and not turning off or rebooting the computer until we are finished with procedure.

I need you to download and install these programs: (don't run or use them yet!!)

Download AboutBuster

Please download and install AD-Aware.
Check Here on how setup and use it - please make sure you update it first.

Click here http://www.davehigham.zen.co.uk/downloads/cwsuninst.zip to download cwsuninst.zip.
Extract cwsuninst.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop.

Download the Hoster from here http://members.aol.com/toadbee/hoster.zip.

Download CW-Shredder

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

For anyone using Windows XP, 'Search' will not automatically show hidden files even if your folder options settings are set to do that. Do this so you can see hidden files and folders - click here http://www.davehigham.zen.co.uk/downloads/xphidden.zip to download xphidden.zip. Extract xphidden.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double-click the xphidden.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

If you can do those for me including posting a fresh HJT log, I'll get back to you ASAP with the procedure to fix this hijacker. MrC
Hello adamsgillian,

I will be taking over for MrCharlie to help you out. This is one of the most severe infections to remove that we see these days. It runs from an added service and often a hidden dll. It will reinstall itself if Internet Explorer is opened and with each reboot it adds more infected files. Please do the following steps in order.:

Step#1

The first thing I need you to do is download the file from here:

Getservice.zip

Extract the file to the c:\ drive. Then navigate to the c:\getservices and double-click on the getservices.bat file. A notepad will open up. Please paste the contents of that notepad as a reply to this post.

Step#2

This infection continues to reinstall itself through a hidden dll which we have to find and remove.

1. Please download DllCompare
( The Screenshot will show you how the program will look when it starts.)

2. Start the Program with its default settings and put a check mark in the include subdirectories. Click the Run Locate.com and wait until the scan says complete.

3. Click the Compare button to start the next process.

4. Files in the upper portion have been verified to "exist", Files in the bottom section were not able to be accessed. Very few files should be listed in the bottom section when the Compare scan is complete.

5. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower section to select them. Right-click on the file and use the Option Rescan screenshot.

6. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then it will be removed from the list (to reduce the number of identified files) screenshot

7. Click the Make a Log of what was found button, and post the log here in this thread using Add Reply to receive further instructions.

Step#3

Please post those two log files in this thread using Add Reply and I will give you further instructions.
Thanks for all your advice. I won't be at this infected computer until Monday or Tuesday but I will follow your instructions and post logs as soon as I get them. Should I just follow your instructions only and not any of MrCharlie's ? Thanks a lot again. Gillian
Hello adamsgillian Yes please just follow my advice. I will be following your posts and it will be easier for you to follow my instructions in the order I give them after these two logs. Cheers
Sorry it's taken me so long to get these logs to you. Here they are. Please let me know what the next step is. Thanks so much for your help and time! This is one that I need a little more information from the computer before giving removal instructions.

Please go to Start > Run and type services.msc into the Run box. The services management console will open. In the left pane are the list of services that are running on the computer. In that list please look for one of the following services:
Workstation NetLogon Service
Network Security Service (NSS)
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper
Remote Access Service

I suspect it will be the Network Security Service (NSS) but I am not certain. When you find one of the four services listed please right click on it and choose Properties. When the property window opens, at the top of the window beside Service Name you should see O?’ŽrtñåȲ$Ó. If it is not there in any of the above listed services, please go through each service until you find the one that has that entry beside Service Name. Once you locate the correct service please note the following:
1) The Display name of the service
2) The Path to Executable
3) On the LogOn tab is it Local System or other.

Please post all of that information back here into this thread.
I checked the 4 services you asked me to and didn't find the service name you posted in your instructions. I went through each service and didn't find it in any other service either. However, when I clicked on the Network Security Service I get a message that reads: "Configuation Manager: A required entry in registry is missing or an attempt to wrtie to registry failed." What's next? Gillian
Question: Are you saying that you HAVE a service called Network Security Service? If so that is bad - there is no such service in XP - it is added by the malware. So the information that you find in its properties window, such as the Path To Executable is the information we need to delete the service and therefore the malware. I need as much information as you can find on the tabs in the properties of that service
thanks
This computer has a service named network security service (NSS) When I click on properties I get "Configuration Manger: A required entry in registry is missing or an attempt to write to registry failed." Then I close that and get "System cannot find the file specified." There is nothing in the description, startup or startup type colums. Under Log on As it says Local System. I do have a service called Remote Procedure Call (RPC) but it doesn't have the word helper at the end. An I have a service Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator. I did write down the service names and path if you need them. Let me know what to do next or what info I can get to you to assist. Thank you so much again! Gillian
Hi Gillian

The Remote Procedure Call services are proper windows services. In fact if you want to know what services there should be on an XP machine you can go to Black Viper's Services
The one that is bad is the Network Security Services.

Please copy and save these instructions in Wordpad. You may also want to print out these directions as the Internet will not be available. You must disconnect from the internet totally, as staying connected while fixing will prevent the fix from working. Also please keep Internet Explorer closed throughout as opening it will reinstall the infection. Read through all the instructions so that you can ask any questions now, before you disconnect from the Internet.

Please continue with the next step and if you run into any problems with the current one, just keep going through the list step by step. Just be sure to let us know what the problem was when you finally reply.

Step#1:

Please go to Start>Control Panel>Add Remove Programs and uninstall:

C:\PROGRA~1\Web Offer\wo.exe

Step#2:

1. Please download About:Buster from here: http://tools.zerosrealm.com/AboutBuster.zip.

2. Once it is downloaded extract it to c:\aboutbuster. Do NOT use it yet

Step#3:

Another program to download is Registrar Lite for use later: Please download Registrar Lite and install it to C:\Program Files\RegLite\ . This is a registry editor that is very easy to use.

Step#4:

Please disconnect from the Internet and unplug your modem for the duration of this fix

1. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping F8 while booting up and continue for the rest of the fix in SAFE MODE

2. Click on start > control panel > administrative programs > services. Look for a service called . Double click on that service and click stop and then set the startup to disabled. Also write down the name and path of the file listed in the Path to executable field. This filename must be deleted below. On the LogOn tab there should be an entry at the bottom allowing you to disable it. However, given that it is malware it may not be there.

Step#5:

Press control-alt-delete to get into the task manager and end the follow processes if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\dasetup.log:vixat
C:\WINDOWS\addhv32.exe

Step#6:

I now need you to delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\dasetup.log:vixat
C:\WINDOWS\addhv32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\grhet.dll
C:\WINDOWS\sdkve.dll
C:\PROGRA~1\Web Offer\wo.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\w?nlogon.exe

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

Step#7:

Then close all programs and windows and run hijackthis. Put a checkmark next to each of these entries and click 'fix checked' button when ready (some may be gone after uninstalling some programs):

Step#8:

In the next step we are going to remove a service that gets installed by this malware.

1. Open Registrar Lite and run it.

2. Copy and paste the bold text below into the address bar of Registrar Lite:(this is making a Registry backup for safety in case of error)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\

Go to File> Export and and save as (in the C:\Program Files\Registrar Lite (Reglite) folder):

1.) Winkey.reg (Save as type: regedit4 .reg type)
2.) Winkey.hiv (Save as type: Scroll to select-regetd32/WinAPI *hiv *dat files)

3. Copy and paste the bold text below into the address bar of Reglite:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\O?’ŽrtñåȲ$Ó

3. Click Go

4. If O?’ŽrtñåȲ$Ó exists it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

5. Copy and Paste the bold text below into the address bar of Registrar Lite:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_O?’ŽrtñåȲ$Ó

6. Click Go

7. If LEGACY_O?’ŽrtñåȲ$Ó exists then right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

8. If you have trouble deleting a key. Then click once on the key name to highlight it and on the top menu choose Security, then Edit Permissions. Then make sure you are an Administrator and give yourself Full Control of that key. Then click on everyone and put a checkmark in "full control". Then press apply and ok and attempt to delete the key again.

9. If you have had to change the permissions on the keys in Registrar Lite then they will have to be returned to the way they were . To do this please navigate to C:\ProgramFiles\Registrar Lite (Reglite) and double-click on Winkey.reg. It will ask if you want to merge this file with the registry, say Yes. Then double-click on Winkey.hiv and merge this file with the Registry. You have now returned the permissions to the way they were.

Step#9:

This is the step where we will use About:Buster that you had downloaded previously.

Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on aboutbuster.exe When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so. Post the log file in your next reply

When it has completed move on to step 10.

Step#10:

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
Name the file as fix.reg
Change the Save as Type to All Files
and Save it on the desktop

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\HSA]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SE]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SW]

Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes, and this will clear some registry entries left behind by the process.

Step#11:

1.Reboot your computer back to normal mode and Scan again with HijackThis. We still have a few steps to complete but a log file at this time would be helpful.

2. Post both your log from About Buster and your HijackThis log here in this thread with any questions or problems that you have run into. There are still some steps that are necessary to clear out all of the malware. There will be necessary files that it has deleted that will need to be replaced.

Good Luck!
