Hi,
I was surfing suprnova.org and bit torrent website when my laptop suffered a browser hijack. I have spyware guard installed, and on one prompt in the dialogue box to keep new value or restore old value, i clicked keep new value. After which, there is a toolbar installed on the top of the IE. there is also one at the bottom on every new IE i open and an advert popping out. Moreover, in the favourite listing, there have been alot of new additions of folders. Below is the log i obtained from the spyware guard:

BROWSER HIJACK ALERT - BROWSER PAGE CHANGED
On 07:26:19 09/30/2004 a browser page change was detected.
Registry Location: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\
Value Name: Search Bar
Old Value: http://ecmh.com/searchbar.html

Hi jean, Thank you for posting to Tom Coyote. I will be assisting you in getting your system back up and running like it should. If you have any questions about any of my instructions, please post them here.

First I need you to download the Current version of HiJack This from here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/Merijn/HijackThis.zip
when you install it, it must be in it's own folder.

To make a new folder, Open Windows Explorer
A shortcut is to hold down the 'windows key' on your keyboard, and tap 'E'
locate your root drive (usually C:) on the left pane.
left click it once to make it active in the right pane.
right click in the right pane, highlight new in the menu that pops up, then select New Folder from the pop out menu.
type HJT, and press enter.
This will make a new folder Named HJT

The Reason behind requiring it to be in it's own folder is that if it runs from the Zip, it will not be able to create backups. And also, so that if there is a problem after the fix, the backups are easy to find.

Once this is done, run hijackthis, click Scan.
when it has finished, the button you clicked that said Scan will now say Save Log
click Save Log
it will open a notepad file with the log in it.
Please post the entire contents of that file in this post as your reply.
This is the logfile:

Thank you for posting your log, this allows us to get a better look as to what is going on.

You have a Lop.com infection. To remove it follow the instructions below.

Step #1
For Windows 2000/XP users

Click Start Select Control Panel
double click Add/Remove Programs
look for any of the following, and uninstall them:
Window Search
Window Searching
Lop.com
LOP SEARCH
Browser Enhancer
Ultimate Browser Enhancer
SearchAssistant

IMPORTANT!!!
you may find entries similair to the above but with Weird spacing in the names.

They are Lop.com, uninstall them.

You may be given a code to insert, do so and reboot when done.

If it is not listed in Add/Remove Programs, or if the uninstall does not seem to work go here:

http://lop.com/new_uninstall.exe

download and run this uninstaller. Reboot when done.

Step #2
You have Spywareguard running on your machine and that is good.

But prior to doing the fix below with hijackthis it needs to be turned off.
Please do the following.

Right click the running icon of Spywareguard, it will open the program, Menu,
file, exit, and confirm the programs close.

Unless it is turned off it could interfere with the fix by hijackthis.

Step #3
Run hijackthis and click Scan
when that has finished, put a check next to the following entries, and with ALL WINDOWS CLOSED (even this one), click Fix Selected. Some of the lines may be gone as a result of a previous fix.

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://ecmh.com/searchbar.html

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.wiyuueaoeojha.com/2BThFvmTCVkBn…eaSmzKHN_U.html

The following have randomly named file names, and as such are normally malware, UNLESS you know what they are, and they are from a safe source, please check for removal.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mathjugs] C:\PROGRA~1\SAVEDA~1\bookfast.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dart way shim mapi] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\activebirddartway\RULE INTERNET.exe

When that is finished, Reboot and post a new log.

Here are some programs to help boost your machines immune system

Lavasoft Ad-Aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
Spybot S&D http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
AVG Free http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
Spyware Blaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

These are all programs that can be used by the average computer user without difficulty, and without undesired results.

Lavasoft Ad-Aware will clean up alot of spyware infections.
Spybot S&D will clean up alot of spyware infections.
between these two programs, most of the nasties can be safely removed.

AVG Free Antivirus is an Excellent Antivirus, especially since it is free.

Spyware Blaster is a program that you only have to run weekly, the settings and changes it makes are static, and you don't need to keep it running for it's protection to work.
It has a large database of Identified, and known spyware/malware/activeX controls. It instructs windows and IE, Firefox, and mozilla browsers not to install or run any of these nasties.

lastly, make sure you do not run TWO antivirus programs at the same time. it can result in conflicts, and leaving your system wide open to attack and infection. (Spyware Guard is not an Anti-Virus and can be run side by side with anti-virus without conflicts)

also in Spybot S&D there is a resident program called tea-timer. it monitors your registry entries and notifies you of changes made to your registry.
