When I type in a URL the page will load but then automatically switch to some Search Engine page and I get a "Your System is Infected Click here for a Scan" pop-up.

I have run adware and spyware and made sure both were current in updates and no such luck. Please help! Here is my log.

You have the Peper Trojan. It is a very stubborn infection which requires a specific tool to remove. There are two tools available. Please follow these instructions in order:

1. Download Newuninst.exe.

2. Run it with an active internet connection.

3. Reboot to finish removing the entries it found.

4. Run the tool a second time (with an active internet connection).

5. Reboot to finish removing the entries it found.

The second tool which does not require Internet Access to Clean is:

1. Please Download PeperFix.exe,

2. Start the tool and click Find and Fix.

3. Reboot to finish removing what it found.

4. Run the tool a second time (again with an active internet connection).

5. Reboot to finish removing the entries.

Then Go here and run online scans (all), allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed.

Check your system for latest trojan definitions with an Online trojan scan

Here's how to post a Hijack This log

Download "HijackThis" here This is the new version.
When downloading, choose "save to disk" and NOT open!

Now create a new folder for it, C:\Hijackthis, for example.
After unzipping the file. to C:\Hijack This, you'll end up with the file itself, which is Hijackthis.exe, and that's the one you'll need to doubleclick.'

When HijackThis is on your Desktop it will save the backups as Icons and can be confused with your other programs. It is best to have it in it's own folder.

When you have done that, delete the copy of hijackthis that you have on your desktop.
Thanks for your response and help, but I am still having trouble

Ok step 1. New unist.exe: I did and all it said was "unistall memory watcher" and I did and reloaded and ran it again and it said the same thing.

Step 2. Peperfix.exe: I ran peper fixer and it said "No Pepers Found"

Step 3. Trend Micro Housecall: I got a page could not be displayed error

Step 4. I can't even get to Panda because when I hit "Scan my computer" the About: Search pops up.

I am sorry to take more of your time, but do you have any other suggestions, or can you please tell me what I am doing wrong, because being the computer dummy I am, I am sure there is something I am not doing correctly. Thanks.

Here is my most current log

Oh and here is the result of the etrust scan. But I can't find where it says anything about fixing or deleting them. And when I went to the paths, I could not find them and I even did a search for them by name and got no results? I have "Show Hidden Files" on. Help!! Scan Results: 70839 files scanned. 2 viruses were detected. Hi Octy

Don't get discouraged we are getting there.

Under "items to clear" click all. Then click "clear selected items"

Reboot and Rescan with HJT and post a new log here.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
You are great! I am going to do all of this now and will report back.

Oh another thing just in case this tells you more. Right now when I went and clicked the link to get the instructions on how to reboot in safe mode, it opened a new page, but it was not what you linked me to it was http://www.ads234.com This happens A LOT. Usually I just hit reload or back and click the link again, and it takes me to the correct page.

I'll let you know what happens after I follow the instructions. Thanks again.

Heather
Ok lets see here :)

Step 1 do the HJT and fix files. Did that but could not find the DBois file.

Step 2. Reboot in safe mode and delete files (made sure I went in and made all files visable first). I rebooted in safe mode, went into my System32 file and could not find any of the files you said to delete?? I rebooted in regular mode.

Step 3. Extract the thing and run and fix it, did that and restarted.

I opened IE upon restarting and it went right to the about:search page (which seems to be my home page and has been for a good while??)

Other than getting the www.ads234.com page when I click links, and the about:search page as a pop up or when I try to get to certain places, other than that my computer seems to be running fine (thankfully!) It is not running slow. OH there is one thing. I always used to use Netscape but now I can't even get it to open?? It is like something made it not work so I would have to use IE? Hmmm… ;)

Also, is there anything on here that you see that I can delete because I won't or don't need it? Stuff that may not be harmful but are just clogging up space?

Anyways, again thanks for the help. Here is the log I just ran before opening IE to post here.

Heather

Do this right!!!Print the instructions out.

  • Download reglite
  • install "Reglite" and run it, enter HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs into the address bar.
  • Double click on AppInit_DLLs to open a "Data Editor" properties window, if the bottom textfield named "Value" contains a .dll file; then this is the hidden file you need to get rid off.
  • You should not be able to delete this file if you try to clear the value field, IMPORTANT: take note of the path and name of the .dll file. Write it down so you do not forget it.
  • Rename the Folder "Windows" (This is a purple "highlighted" folder in the left hand window) to NOTWINDOWS. Simply click on the folder, click on "Edit" in the menu bar and select "Rename".
  • Click AppInit_DLLs again and clear the value containing the .dll and ok it. This should have removed the .dll
  • Rename the windows folder back to its original name "Windows".
  • Run SpyBot, Ad-Aware and CWShredder
  • Check the following three links for instructions on downloading and running the applications listed:
  • Next step will be to remove this dll file so make sure you have it noted down.
  • Step 1
  • Download KillBox
  • Unzip and start the application
  • Paste in the dir
  • Menu Select Action -> Delete on Reboot
  • Select File -> Add file
  • Select Action -> Process and Reboot
  • If Step 1 didn't work
  • Step 2
  • Click "Start" => "Run" and type in "cmd" (Without the quotations) and click on "Okay".
  • This will open a command window I will assume you have a basic knowledge of DOS if you have any problems at this point just write back I will outline the commands.
  • Type in dir
  • Go to the system32 folder (This is where the .dll file will typically reside) and type attrib -R "nameofdll".dll
  • Carry out Step 1 again
  • Restart your computer in safemode
  • Open cmd window again as before
  • Type dir
  • While in safe mode (How do I boot into "Safe" mode?), run the 3 ad-removal programs again, just to make sure all traces are gone.
  • Boot up pc as normal and you should be trouble free.
