Help! My kids have downloaded tons of junk, and now the computer is overrun with popups and bogged down when you try to do anything. Here is the HiJackThis log:

My name is Vino Rosso - if it helps, you can call me Vino for short. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a little time to research and, while I complete my training, all my recommended fixes will be checked by an expert.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.

Hi bigredkid

OK, we've got a few things to do. Let's start with…

1 - Move HijackThis
Using Windows Explorer, create a folder called HJT on your C: drive, that is C:\HJT
Extract HijackThis.exe from the Zip file to this folder - information on how to do this is available >here<
Run HijackThis by double-clicking on C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe and select Do a scan and save a log file
Post the log with your next reply
Note Do not run HijackThis.exe directly from within the Zip file

Do not try to fix anything yet! HijackThis shows lots of good files as well as bad.

2 - Uninstall List
If HijackThis is still open, click on Config > Misc Tools otherwise
Run HijackThis then click on Open the Misc Tools section
Click on Open Uninstall Manager…
Click on Save list…
Leave the default filename as uninstall_list.txt and save the file, noting where it has been saved
Close HijackThis.

3 - Check on status
After you have completed the above, please reboot and provide:
  • a new HijackThis log
  • the uninstall list

Hi bigredkid

A few things to do so please read through carefully and ask any questions before proceding. Remember, if you can, it's worth printing these instructions out before you start.

Just before we start, I'd like to draw your attention to a program on your PC called CyberDefender. This product has previously been listed as rogue anti-spyware however recent tests have seen it removed from the suspect list. You can read more about CyberDefender >here<. Please let me know in your next reply whether you wish to keep or remove this product.

1 - Show hidden files
We need to show hidden files and folders.
In Windows Explorer, select Tools > Folder Options > View
Set 'Hidden files and folders' to Show hidden files and folders
Untick Hide protected operating system files.
OK
Instructions can also be found >here<.

2 - Stop processes
Using Task Manager, stop the following processes
Press the Ctrl, Alt, and Delete keys together to open Task Manager
Click the 'Processes' tab
Click on 'Image Name' to sort the processes alphabetically
Scroll down, right-click and select 'End Process' on the following entries if they exist
OK any warnings.
APCMain.exe
IMGrabber2.exe
SpywareStriker.exe
Close Task Manager

3 - Remove Programs
Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
If present, remove the following programs:
** Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.
Enhanced Browser Overlay
Performance Center
Spyware Striker
Web Savings From Ebates
WebDP 2.07
WildTangent

Also search in Add/Remove Programs for ALL previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment…. )
(It should have this icon next to it: [external image: Posted Image])
Click that entry and then click on the Change/Remove button and follow the instructions to remove Java.
Repeat to remove all versions of Java.

4 - Run HJT Scan
Run a scan with HijackThis and tick the following entries, if present:

Close all windows except HijackThis
Select Fix Checked in HijackThis.

5 - Delete suspect files/folders
Using Windows Explorer, browse for the following files/folders and delete as instructed
NB Some files may have already been deleted by earlier actions so don't worry if you do not see them:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\IMGrabber2.exe <=== This file only
C:\WINDOWS\System32\nsf2B6.dll <=== This file only
C:\WINDOWS\System32\nsp148.dll <=== This file only

C:\Program Files\Ascentive <=== This folder only

Using Start > Search > All Files and Folders
Enter drkly16j.dll in the 'All or part of file name' box
Select C: in the 'Look in' dropdown box
Click Search Now
When the search is complete, right-click on every file with that name and select delete.
Repeat the above search but this time for ALCXMNTR.EXE
Again, when the search is complete, right-click on every file with that name and select delete.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

6 - Update Java
Download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), update 9, from >here<

7 - Kaspersky Online Scan
Please do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    + Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    o Scan Options:
    + Scan Archives
    + Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
8 - Check on status
After you have completed the above, please reboot and provide:
  • the Kaspersky report
  • a new HijackThis log
  • and a description of how your PC is behaving

Hi Vino,

Attached are the Kaspersky report and the most recent HJT log.

Two other items… I can still get a refund for Cyber Defender…would you suggest a better alternative? Also, I could not delete the program Web Savings From Ebate from the Add/Remove screen. I get a message titled Java Virtual Machine Launcher with the text "Could not find the main class. Program will exit"

Otherwise, things are looking better. I see that kaspersky still found a number of viruses.

I will look forward to your next post.

I'll provide some information to help you stay clear of malware once we've got your PC cleaned up.

No problems, let's crack on.

Note: You will not be able to access the internet during this fix so please copy the instructions into a document or print them out.

1 - Clean Temporary Files
Please download to your Desktop ATF Cleaner by Atribune from >here<. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only. It does not require any installation and uses minimal system resources. It is set up to clean IE, FireFox and Opera, and detects the browsers you have and greys out the other(s).

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Recommend UNCHECKING COOKIES if you rely on system remembered passwords.
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT FIREFOX SAVED PASSWORDS
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT COOKIES AND SAVED PASSWORDS
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your cookies and saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

2 - Run HJT Scan
Run a scan with HijackThis and tick the following entries, if present:

Close all windows except HijackThis
Select Fix Checked in HijackThis.

3 - Boot Into Safe Mode
Boot your PC into Safe Mode by restarting your computer and keep tapping F8 until the menu appears.
Use your up and down arrow keys to select Safe Mode.
We will continue your fix in Safe Mode.

4 - Delete suspect files/folders
Using Windows Explorer, browse for the following files/folders and delete as instructed
NB Some files may have already been deleted by earlier actions so don't worry if you do not see them:

C:\WINDOWS\sskb5.exe <=== This file only
C:\WINDOWS\userint32.exe <=== This file only

C:\WINDOWS\System32\in10b6.dll <=== This file only

Click Start > Control Panel > double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files… button.
There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 ticked
  • Downloaded Applets
  • Downloaded Applications
  • Other Files
Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

Re-boot your PC normally

5 - Kaspersky Online Scan
Please do another online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    + Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    o Scan Options:
    + Scan Archives
    + Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
6 - Check on status
After you have completed the above, please reboot and provide:
  • the Kaspersky Scan report
  • a new HijackThis log
  • and a description of how your PC is behaving
