I have been having BIG problems with my computer.

First off I,ve got Elitebar. Even after I remove it it eventually comes back.

Second I have Trojan.StartPage virus. Norton finds it and it is back immediately! Here is the Norton message:

Scan type: Realtime Protection Scan
Event: Virus Found!
Virus name: Trojan.StartPage
File: C:\WINDOWS\System32\bkmsf32.dat
Location: C:\WINDOWS\System32
Computer: JOE-XP
User: JoeDorn
Action taken: Clean failed : Delete succeeded : Access denied
Date found: Thu Sep 02 07:54:58 2004

I run Adware SE (always check for updates) and it gets rid of stuff and soon all of it is back. I have even had a computer guy come to my house and remove this stuff and it comes back. In particular he tells me the processes are the biggest problem. Adware removes two or more instances of a process name Vx2 but it always comes back.

Here is my HJT log:

If anyone can help me get this fixed I sure would appreciate it. What else can I say!

Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

Here's my spiel for Adaware and Spybot. If Adaware SE has similar settings, please use them and try it again.

I do NOT expect you to have ADAWARE and ADAWARE SE BOTH on your machine. :)

Please download and run Spybot-Search&Destroy and Ad-Aware; they are the standard programs for finding and cleaning malware off your system.  Here are links to both programs, and instructions for their use.

Get Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de  (This is the NEW Version 1.3)
Get AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

Download and install these programs in their own PERMANENT folders if you don't already have them. If you do have them, make sure they are UPDATED AND CONFIGURED AS DESCRIBED.

To run Spybot S&D:

After installing first press "Online", click on "Search for Updates", then select all updates.  Beside the download button is a little down-pointed arrow, which gives you a choice of several download sites; select one of the servers listed (the Australian server usually works well).  Now, press "Download Updates." If that site doesn't work or you get an error message, try a different server.

When the updates are finished, close your browser and ALL WINDOWS EXCEPT THE ONE SPYBOT IS RUNNING IN, then press 'Check for Problems'; THE SCAN WILL TAKE SEVERAL MINUTES.  Have SpyBot remove all it finds THAT ARE MARKED IN RED.  When it's finished, REBOOT your system.

Get AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

Then, Run ADAWARE:

Before you scan with AdAware, ALWAYS check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate" button at the lower right of the panel. Updates for this program come out frequently to keep up with new malware.  THIS IS CRITICAL; updating is as important as installing these programs.

Then ……..
Make sure the following settings are made and on ——-"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

then……
click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options ON: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

then………
go to settings(the gear icon on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and click "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ………..then…….."Cleaning engine" and  "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then…… click "proceed" to save your settings.
To scan, click NEXT.  This scan will also take several minutes.

When the scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press "next" and then say YES to the prompt, "do you want to remove all these entries?"  Reboot again.

I see a Peper trojan on your machine. Sometimes the "off the shelf" programs will take it out, sometimes not. If they don't, I have other methods at our disposal we can bring into play.

Adaware and Spybot probably will NOT get rid of everything, so when you're finished reboot and post a new log file in this thread, and we'll deal with the malware that's left. :)
Hi Micah and thanks for the welcome. Before we go any furthur trying to solve my problem please accept my thanks in advance. It is truly remarkable to be able to get this kind of quality assistance sight unseen so to speak! Thanks!

I ran spybot and Adaware SE. I was under the impression that adaware se was a later version so I kept it. My registry looks like this now:

I used Norton to get rid of the TrojanStartPage virus and when I rebooted it was back in the System volume Information folder (which was a hidden file). I haven'tbeen getting any more Norton warnings since the initial one.

thanks again for the help!
You still have the Peper Trojan.

I was unable to locate some of the items on your list. 3, 5, 7, 8, and 9
I did locate: 1, 2, 3, and 6 on your list.

This would be fun if it wasn't for all the hassle these guys have caused me!

I have also installed service pack 2.

Joe

Hi Micah,

Here is the new log. My computer seems to be working great by the way. At first I couldn't find the web offer folder. Guess where it was? In the recyling bin!

While I was in safe mode I happened to see a hidden folder called "recycler" that had a couple of files with stange names (S-1-5-21-583907252-117609710-682003330-500) & (S-1-5-21-1940920577-1133185969-1423778804-1004). Is this anything to be concerned about?

Anyway here is the log:

Thanks!

That hidden folder called "recycler" IS your recycle bin, so leave it alone.

The log is clean now!!!

GOD bless!!!

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?" here:

http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957

Download IE-Spyad here:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings here:

http://browsercheck.qualys.com/index.php

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.

Thanks thanks and double thanks. I will be reading your advice on how to avoid this sort of "problem" twice a day for the next month just to keep myself safer. This is a great website. Just what the internet is supposed to be. It has been a real pleasure working with (for) you. Joe
Micah, A question. Now that I have a clean registry I thought I would run adaware se to feel good. Instead I had 13 new critical objects. Ezula seems to be particularly active. Should I be concerned about this? Of the 13 items 9 of them are EzuLa related. The other 4 are cookies. Joe
Ezula is "adware".

Read about it here.

Tracking cookies aren't "malicious".

Personally, I use CookieWall, and I also have a lot of cookies "blocked" in my IE settings.

Most of the sites that I block cookies at were put in there when I installed IE-Spyad (See my suggestions on preventing infection for a link to their site).

When I run Spybot and Adaware, I never get anything that needs fixed or considered "malware".

I "run a pretty tight ship". ;)
