Hello ihateABOUT:BLANK,

You have a number of different malware infections the worst of which is about:blank. You are running several different programs which are not recommended as they come with adware installed and install all sorts of other things as well. I will suggest you uninstall them, but first we need to deal with about blank.

This particular variant installs an extra service in your services.msc and also deletes several legitimate files. We need to find the service first and then we can proceed with the fix.

The first thing I need you to do is download the file which will identify the service that has been installed from here:

Getservice.zip

Extract the file to the c:\ drive. Then navigate to the c:\getservices and double-click on the getservices.bat file. A notepad will open up. Please paste the contents of that notepad as a reply to this post.

Good Luck!
Thanks for helping me out! I followed your instructions and here is the results. 5. WildTangent <— this is strictly optional as there are some issues with the information it gathers from your computer but not serious issues.

Step#3:

1. Please download About:Buster from here: http://tools.zerosrealm.com/AboutBuster.zip.

2. Once it is downloaded extract it to c:\aboutbuster. Do NOT use it yet

3. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping F8 while booting up and continue for the rest of the fix in SAFE MODE

Step#4:

Another program to download and use later: Please download Registrar Lite and install it to C:\Program Files\RegLite\ . This is a registry editor that is very easy to use.

Step#5:

Please disconnect from the Internet and unplug your modem for the duration of this fix

1. Click on start > control panel > administrative programs > services. Look for a service called . Double click on that service and click stop and then set the startup to disabled. Also write down the name and path of the file listed in the Path to executable field. This filename must be deleted below.

Step#6:

Press control-alt-delete to get into the task manager and end the follow processes if they exist:

netgk.exe>
netig32.exe>
winamp.exe> <– check the spelling this is not the correct winamp file

Step#7:

I now need you to delete the following files:

netgk.exe>
netig32.exe>

.
qmlgi.dll>
d3kx32.dll>
< C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdkyn.exe>
apiuh32.exe>
msco32.exe>
msuf.exe>
javats32.exe>
ipoe32.exe>
d3sg32.exe>
apinl.exe>
apiqc32.exe>
atlon.exe>
ievt.exe>
ipml.exe>

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

Step#8:

Then close all programs and windows and run hijackthis. Put a checkmark next to each of these entries and click 'fix checked' button when ready (some may be gone after uninstalling some programs):

Step#9:

In the next step we are going to remove a service that gets installed by this malware.

1. Open Registrar Lite and run it.

2. Copy and paste the bold text below into the address bar of Registrar Lite:(this is for safety in case of error)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\

Go to File> Export and and save as (in the C:\Program Files\Registrar Lite (Reglite) folder):

1.) Winkey.reg (Save as type: regedit4 .reg type)
2.) Winkey.hiv (Save as type: Scroll to select-regetd32/WinAPI *hiv *dat files)

3. Copy and paste the bold text below into the address bar of Reglite:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\O?’ŽrtñåȲ$Ó

3. Click Go

4. If O?’ŽrtñåȲ$Ó exists it will be highlighter in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

5. Copy and Paste the bold text below into the address bar of Registrar Lite:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_O?’ŽrtñåȲ$Ó

6. Click Go

7. If LEGACY_ O?’ŽrtñåȲ$Ó exists then right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

8. If you have trouble deleting a key. Then click once on the key name to highlight it and on the top menu choose Security, then Edit Permissions. Then make sure you are an Administrator and give yourself Full Control of that key. Then click on everyone and put a checkmark in "full control". Then press apply and ok and attempt to delete the key again.

9. If you have had to change the permissions on the keys in Registrar Lite then you will have to return them to the way they were. To do this please navigate to C:\ProgramFiles\Registrar Lite (Reglite) and double-click on Winkey.reg. It will ask if you want to merge this file with the registry, say Yes. Then double-click on Winkey.hiv and merge this file with the Registry. You have now returned the permissions to the way they were.

Step#10:

This is the step where we will use About:Buster that you had downloaded previously.

Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on aboutbuster.exe When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so. Post the log file in your next reply

When it has completed move on to step 11.

Step#11:

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
Name the file as fix.reg
Change the Save as Type to All Files
and Save it on the desktop

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\HSA]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SE]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SW]

Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes, and this will clear some registry entries left behind by the process.

[b]Step#12:

1. [b]Reboot your computer back to normal mode
and Scan again with HijackThis. We still have a few steps to complete but a log file at this time would be helpful.

2. Post both your log from About Buster and your HijackThis log here in this thread with any questions or problems that you have run into. There are still some steps that are necessary to clear out all of the malware. There will be necessary files that it has deleted that will need to be replaced.

Good Luck!
Followed the instructions, here are my new logs…

Thanks again for your help.
Also, if Internet Explorer is doing all of this, what is the best alternative.

Look forward to your next reply.
It appears we are in the home stretch

Step#1:

Now we need to see if we need to restore some deleted files:
  • Download the Hoster from here. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program. This will restore the original deleted Hosts file.
  • This infection often deletes some system files that need to be replaced. The most frequent one it deletes is shell.dll in Win2K or XP. In XP there are two copies of this file, one is Windows (WINNT) and one in Windows\System32. It does not delete the ones in Windows\System so it does not affect Win9x/ME. If you find it missing please copy the shell.dll from c:\windows\system32\dllcache into both \Windows (WINNT) and Windows\System32 .
  • The other system file which is most frequently deleted is control.exe. Please check to make sure that you have this file and if not Please check for the existence of this file by going to to Merijn's Files (sdhelper) and examine where the file should be for your operating system. If the file is missing then download the appropriate file and place it in the proper place according to this information. The control.exe is more often deleted in Win9x/ME.
  • If you have Spybot S&D installed you will also need to replace one file. Go here: Merijn's Files (sdhelper) and download SDHelper.dll. Copy the file to the folder containing you Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy). Then click Start > Run > regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll" and press the OK button
Step#2:

Run an online antivirus scan at:

http://housecall.antivirus.com/]Trend Micro Online AV

Reboot

Step#3:

1. Scan again with HijackThis

2. POST your log file to see if there is anything left to fix
I started to follow these instructions but did not find any Shell.dll file anywhere, not even in the DLLcache folder, what should i do?
Hi most of the windows files that this infection deletes, including shell.dll are at this Windows Files

I would check your hard drive to make sure that you have the following files and that they haven't been deleted:
* control.exe
* rundll32.exe
* wmplayer.exe
* msconfig.exe
* notepad.exe
* shell.dll
* SDHelper.dll

The instructions for installation in your OS, for each file are below on that web page that has the files on it.

Hope this Helps
Ok, i found all of the files and replaced any of the ones that were not there, here is my last HiJack This log…..

Hi ihateABOUT:BLANK,

It looks like we just have a bit of cleanup to do and things should be back to normal. How is your computer behaving?

Step#1
You have Limeshop on your computer which is another adware variant. I suggest you go to Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs . Uninstall Limeshop/Limewire. You can find alternative programs here: Safe Programs

Step#2

1. Please Download the most recent version of CWShredder, from CWShredder.exe Download into it's own folder.

2. Check for Updates

3. CLOSE ALL WINDOWS except CWShredder

4. Run the program by clicking 'fix' and letting it fix all CWS remnants.

5. REBOOT to finish the removal and clear memory.

Step#3

1. Scan again with HijackThis (ALL WINDOWS CLOSED EXCEPT HJT)

2. Put a check mark beside each of the following entries in the HJT window

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LimeShop] C:\Program Files\LimeShop\LimeShoprun.exe /cp:p "C:\Program Files\LimeShop\System\Code" Main lp: "C:\Program Files\LimeShop"

3. Click 'fix checked'

4. REBOOT to finish removing the entries into SAFE MODE by tapping F8 repeatedly while booting up

5. DELETE the following files:

C:\Program Files\LimeShop\LimeShoprun.exe
C:\Program Files\LimeShop\System\Code

6. DELETE the following folder:

C:\Program Files\LimeShop

7. REBOOT into normal mode

8. please SCAN again with HJT and

9. POST a new log file here in this thread using 'Add Reply' to see if there is anything left to clean.

Hope This Helps
Sorry it took so long to get back to you…

My computer is running a lot better, i am now using Opera instead of Microsoft Internet Explorer.

I know i put a program on my computer that shows all files, i am going to be getting rid of that?

Here is my latest Hijack This Log….

Hi
You will be unable to remove the xphidden file as it was merged into the system registry. If you want to hide you files again then go to Start > Control Panel > Folder Options > View Tab and put a check mark in do not show hidden files and folders, hide protected operating system files and hide extensions for known files types

It is quite possible that you have the Blaster, Nachi or Welchia trojan. To remove this and several other trojans there is a tool which needs to be downloaded and run.

1. Please download Stinger and save it to your desktop

2. Double-click on the stinger.exe file and open the tool

3. Choose your entire hard drive to scan.

4. Choose Scan Now

5. Stinger will fix anything that it finds

6. Click the File menu and select Save report to file

Your HijackThis log appears to be clean, Congratulations!

There are a few things you should do now that you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:
1) Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2) Reboot.

3) Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.

2. Another cleanup that will help is to go to Start>Programs>Acccessories>System Tools> Disk Cleanup and put a check mark beside all the entries in the disk cleanup window that ask you what you want to clean. Clean all hard drives and all files. This will get rid of any malware that is hiding in the temporary folders.

3. Make sure that all are gone, by checking the folders that the Temporary Internet Files and Temp files are stored in. To do so use Control Panel > Internet Options(or right click the IE icon on the desktop and choose Properties). Click Delete Files on the General Tab - place a check in the Delete all offline content box, then 'Clear History' and then press OK

4. Empty your Recycle Bin

5. You do not appear to have a firewall running and there are a few available for free that have excellent reputations:

Zone ALarm Free Firewall

Kerio Free Firewall

6. Microsoft has recently released SP2 which contains new critical updates for both Windows and Internet Explorer, last week. Please go to Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the cirtical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update
