Possible Browser Hijack

I'm asking for help on behalf of my sister who has had a lot of computer problems recently such as freezing when either online or offline, frequent "page not found" errors (including when she is in our own ad-free family forum and trying to reply to a post), all of which has made computing a nightmare. And she told me she has been unable to get into her Hotmail Inbox. When she goes to Hotmail and logs in, she gets numerous pop-ups, and behind them is a full page of links that looks like some sort of search facilty and when she closes it she finds the Hotmail window has disappeared.

I went through her registry today and got rid of some stuff that was obviously nasty ….numerous entries containing words like WebCoolSearch or CoolWebSearch and anything else I could find that had "search" in the name along with words that were clearly to do with porn sites (she has an 18 yr old son) but I don't know if I got everything or not, mainly because there were a few things that looked suss that I wasn't game to delete in case they were legit.

However, since doing that, for the first time in weeks she was able to get into Hotmail today without any hitches and read her mail.

She runs Adaware and Spybot regularly and every time she has run Adaware lately it has said there was a possible browser hijack attampt. She also runs Norton AV.

I asked her if her homepage was different to usual but she said she never logs into it, just goes straight to whatever site she wants from a shortcut. I checked what it was set to and it said about.com so I changed it to Google and all the time I was online on her computer today I had no trouble with it getting changed to anything else, even after I had rebooted and relogged on. But I had installed Browser Hijacker Blaster before I rebooted so maybe that helped.

So today, I have downloaded and installed SpyBlaster, Browser Hijacker Blaster and IE SpyAd to try and protect her from further troubles but I'd be happier if someone could look at her log file from HiJack This and see what else needs to go.

Sorry this post is so long but I thought it best to tell you every detail I could think of.

Here's the log file. (By the way she updated both SpyBot and Adaware and ran them both before I ran Hijack This.)

Thanks in advance for your help ..and I just want to say I think you guys do a fantastic job on this site going by some of the posts I've read.
Download then unzip and run CWShredder to clean up clicking "FIX" to have it remove all it finds.

CWShredder available from these places :-

http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads.php
Or this as a full download without any unzipping required
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/CWShredder.exe

We have found that some of the CWS infections can be removed better from safe mode, rather than normal mode.
To get to safe mode use the F8 key while booting the machine. Detailed instructions from here :-
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…001052409420406

Then post another log.
Thanks, little eagle!

I've ran CWShredder and here's the new log:

Please read through the ideas and free software listed below that will help to keep your computer clean.
Some of these you may have install or may have done already.

Install a firewall.ZoneAlarm FREE

Ensure that an Antivirus is updated weekly and running. AVG antivirus from Grisoft is a very good FREE antivirus program.

Make sure you have the latest critical updates from windows update.
I would hold off on Service Pack 2

SpywareBlaster will prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.

IE-SPYAD puts over 4000 known 'bad' sites into your IE restricted zone so that they cannot install malware on your PC.

Google toolbar has a very good built in popup blocker with a nice search bar. To provide privacy, select disable advanced features when installing.

Check your system for latest virus definitions with an online virus scan.
TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan

Check your system for latest trojan definitions with an Online trojan scan

And also see this link for additional security information.
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Please consider using Firefox
