Good afternoon all -

I came across this website in the hope that someone could help my mum. I have looked at her pc and she has the following problems: (btw currently running win Xp). Will click on a web page, only it re-directs to somewhere else, but only sometimes,. Comes up with a pop up saying " your registry has been infected please go to registrycleanerxp.com. (it says somehting like this anyway and yes…..my mum did download it so lord only knows whats been loaded onto the pc). Also, she actually can't access some websites for some really weird reason. So pleeeasseee, someone help so at least I can get some peace.! (love my mum really :-)

Below is a copy of the hijack log as per the instructions - Eternally greatful - Bells xx

Hello bells and welcome to the What the Tech Forums

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

Your system has been infected by several different infections. One of these monitors your browsing habits and distributes the data back to the author's servers for analysis. This also prompts advertising popups. This is the one we will eliminate to start.

Please download FixWareout from the following site:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.
Hi there!! And oh my thankyou ever so much being so quick - you're a diamond :-)

Anyway as promised her is the fix it log and then below the hijack log:

The only infected item resides in your System Restore Cache which we will be cleaning out as part as the following final cleanup procedures:

Congratulations, your logs look CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you system is completely clean:

Time for some housekeeping
  • Please delete all traces of the FixWareout tool.
  • Then, as part of the next step, click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

    • [external image: Posted Image]
  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"
The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

1. Make sure you keep your Windows OS currentby visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

2. I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Regards,

Trevuren

First download AVG AntiSpyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG AntiSpyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete, run AVG AntiSpyware and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG AntiSpyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
  • Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG AntiSpyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Launch AVG AntiSpyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG AntiSpyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your DESKTOP(This is important).
  • Close AVG AntiSpyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the report scan along with a fresh HJT log for review.
Hello there again Please don't think I am ignoring you, but work commitments have unfortunately kept me away from the family. Adn the sister in law has been rather unwell. (it all happens at once here). So I have been unable to complete the instructions you have sent. I have spoken to another member of the family and they have said they will try and get round mums this weekend to finish of the tasks. I'll let you know how we get on Thanks as always for your patience. Kindest regards BEx
