My computer is screwy. Something is wrong. I have Windows XP Pro, and this thing should be moving much faster than it does. I only surf the web, I don't chat, game, or anything like that. I've looked at lots of porn sites, though, so that's prob what f'ed up the system. I have 256MB RAM, AMD Athlon 1800+ (1.53GHz) Processor DDR memory.

Let's see if you have a hidden hijacker. Do this for me.

Click here to download DllCompare. Start the Program with and click the Run Locate.com - be sure the \Windows\System32 directory is in the box and wait until the the blue text says it has 'completed the scan'.

Click the Compare button to start the next process. The results appear in two panes - files in the upper pane have been verified to 'exist', files in the lower pane were 'not able to be accessed'. Very few files should be listed in the lower pane when the Compare scan is complete. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower pane to select them. Right-click on the file and use the option Rescan. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then if so it will be removed from the list to reduce the number of identified files.

Click the Make a Log of what was found button and post the log here in this thread and wait for further instructions.
Hey Daemon…here's the results… * DLLCompare Log version(1.0.0.125) Files Found that Windows does not See or cannot Access *Not everything listed here means you are infected! ________________________________________________ O^E says: "There were no files found :)" ________________________________________________ Administrator Account = True AppInit_DLLs value = NVDESK32.DLL (not hidden) ——————–End log——————— There were files listed in the top pane, but THIS is all it printed out in the log. I tried a couple times to see if I did it wrong. Thanks!
Could you click here to download CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom and run it, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. If you already have CWShredder, click 'Check for update' and make sure you are running version 1.59.1 Reboot when done.

Click here to download Ad-Aware and install. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Then click the gear wheel at the top and check these options:

General> activate these: "Automatically save log-file" and "Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"

Scanning > activate these: "Scan within archives", "Scan active processes", "Scan registry", "Deep scan registry", "Scan my IE Favorites for banned sites" and "Scan my Hosts file"

Tweaks > Scanning Engine> activate this: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

Tweaks > Cleaning Engine: activate these: "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Click "Proceed" to save your settings, then click "Start", make sure "Activate in-depth scan" is ticked green then scan your system. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".

Reboot when done. Rescan with HJT and post a new log here for a final check over.
Hey Daemon! Here's the latest HJT log: The Verizon stuff is my DSL hookup software. Of the results HJT found here, I haven't deleted anything as yet. I'll wait for your word. Thanks in advance!!!

Daemon is not available so I will be taking over for him to help you. There are a few things to do.

Step#1

Please download and open the following zip file. Double-click on the file inside the zip and when it asks you if you would like to merge the file into your registry, please answer yes. This will make sure all files are visible on your computer.
http://www.davehigham.zen.co.uk/downloads/xphidden.zip

Step#2

Since you downloaded your copy of HijackThis a new version has been released.

1. Please delete the copy of HijacKThis that you have.

2. Download the new version of Hijackthis from this website: http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showtopic=41

3. Double Click on 'HijackThis.zip' to extract and install HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

4. Close ALL windows except HJT

5. SCAN with the new version of HJT and put a check mark beside the following entries:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [winudll.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\winudll.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ssgrate.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\irun4.exe

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: NVDESK32.DLL

6. REBOOT into Safe Mode by tapping F8 repeatedly while booting up

7. In Safe Mode Find and Delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\winudll.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\irun4.exe
C:\??\NVDESK32.DLL <– Find and delete this file

8. Scan again with HijackThis

6. POST the log in this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')
hey gosling… When I DL'ed the "xphidden" program, I get the file extracted. Then, when I click 'merge'…the window that it supposed to ask me if "I am sure I want to add (merge?) the file(s)?" only blinks REAL fast. What am I to do from this point? TIA Paws
ok sometimes it does that. What we do is go and check to see if it did it's job as this can also be done manually.

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Folder Options. On the View tab. Scroll down until you find a folder that says Hidden Files and Folders and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is selected. Then scroll down a little more and make sure there is no check mark beside Hide extensions for known file types and Hide Protected Operating System Files (Recommended) so that all files and extensions will be visible in Windows Explorer. Close Folder Options

Now go to Start > Search . In the search window select All Files and Folders. WHen the next little windows comes up where you enter the file name, scroll down the left hand side of the page until you reach More Advanced Options. Choose More advanced options and then when the left pane changes again make sure that search system folders, search hidden files and folders, search subfolders are all selected with a check mark. Close Search

Once you have completed this, you can proceed to delete and replace your copy of HijackThis so that you will have the advantage of finding many more of the infected files than you would with the version of HijackThis you are using.

Good Luck!
Hey Gosling,

Here's the latest log. Just wondering, why can't I 'delete' the 'compressed old files' when I run a 'disk cleanup'? And, for some reason, I don't have a 'scandisk' option AT ALL in my system tools section. Is something wrong? Thanks a lot, in advance :)

Log is clean congratulations!

As it indicates in disk cleanup it compresses your old files and no files are deleted.
