Sitting here at my Dad's relatively new Dell PC and it is running ridiculously slow. Loading Web pages is a five minute plus job at times and multi-tasking is not even worth trying. I know he looks at sites I would have been grounded for looking at when I was living here, this may be a contributor, as he may have picked up something dodgy along the way.

Here is the log.

Thanks,

Hello and welcome to TomCoyote! My name is silver and I'm currently looking over your log. Please hold on while I research a fix for you.
Hi Hoogie,

Please print/save a copy of these instructions as we will be using Safe Mode during which time you won't have access to the internet.

First we need to temporarily disable Spyware Guard because it may prevent us making changes to your system:

Temporarily disable Spyware Guard
  • Right click the running icon of Spywareguard in the system tray to open the program.
  • Then go to Menu->File, and choose Exit.
  • It will automatically restart at next boot.
Now open HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [License Manager] "C:\Program Files\License_Manager\license_manager.exe " /silent

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked and close HijackThis.

Next, reboot your computer in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8
A menu should appear, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode and press enter

Then please use Windows Explorer to locate and delete this folder:
C:\Program Files\License_Manager

Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Now reboot your computer normally

Once back in normal mode, please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Now open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager… button, then press Save list…
Save the Uninstall log to your deskop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky log, the uninstall log and a new HijackThis log.
Silver, thanks for that. I am currently loading Kaspersky and it is taking an eternity. I did the first part, however, C:\Program Files\Licence_Manager was not there. As it is Easter and I am going away, I will probably not get back in touch until Tuesday April 10 at the earliest. Hope you have a good Easter. Regards, Hoogie
Hello again Silver,

Sorry about the delay. I have done all of the above and here are the logs.

Regards,

Hoogie

Hi Hoogie,

OK next we have some programs to uninstall, so please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs

First look for eMusic - 50 Free MP3 offer and uninstall this item.

You have a program called MCU installed - do you know what this is and did you intentionally install it?

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using alternatives such as VLC Player or Media Player Classic.
To remove, find Viewpoint Media Player and select Uninstall

You have My Way Search Assistant installed on your system. This program is not malware, but it does report on your surfing behavior and is considered very undesirable. If you actually use this program, consider a safe alternative such as Google toolbar. I recommend you remove this program, to do so, find My Way Search Assistant and select Uninstall

You have Logitech Desktop Messenger installed on your system. This is a background process which can access the internet without your knowledge or consent. Although it can assist in providing software updates for your Logitech hardware, it uses resources on your machine and the fact that it accesses the internet without your approval is potentially dangerous. I recommend you remove this program, to do so, open find Logitech Desktop Messenger and select Uninstall

Your Java is outdated and is now a security risk
Go to Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs
Look for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment…. )
(It should have this icon next to it: [external image: Posted Image])
Click that entry and then click on the Change/Remove button and follow the instructions to remove Java.
Repeat to remove all versions of Java.
Download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), from here:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

You have LimeWire, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but P2P file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove it, but of course the choice is yours, if you wish to remove it, find LimeWire 4.12.6 on the list and select uninstall.

Next, assuming your system is still running slowly, we'll have a closer look to see if there is anything hiding from us:

Please download F-Secure Blacklight (blbeta.exe):
https://europe.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
  • Click I ACCEPT and download the graphical user interface version to your Desktop
  • Double click the file to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" on your desktop.
  • The log will have a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.
Download WinPFind3U.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind3u on your desktop.
  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  • Open the WinPFind3u folder and double-click on WinPFind3U.exe to start the program.
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Post the log file in your next response.
It can be quite long, so please check once you have posted, and if the last line is not < End of Report > then the log is too big to fit into a single post and you will need to split it into multiple posts.

Once complete, please post the Blacklight log, the WinPFind3u log and a new HijackThis log. Also please confirm which programs you uninstalled and if the computer is still running slowly.
Hello Silver,

Thanks for that. I have no idea what MCU is, and it was not intentionally installed by Dad. I deleted everything except for LimeWire, Dad wants to keep that, despite my warning.

The computer is running better now.

F-Secure backlight did not find anything and did not create a log. I have included below the WinPFind3U log and a new HiJack this log.

Regards,

Hoogie
What is the best way to populate the restricted sites area of IE to help Dad stay away from sites that could be harmful to his PC? Hoogie
Hi Hoogie,

Great that your machine is running better now, the scans are fine and it looks like your machine is clean :)

I have a program for you which will populate the Restricted Zone of Internet Explorer, putting a site in the Restricted Zone doesn't stop you visiting it but it does restrict the ability of the sites to infect your computer:

IESPYADS helps protect you from malicious websites by placing a list of known bad websites in Internet Explorer's Restricted Zone. This Zone limits the capabilities of these websites including preventing them from installing software. This will compliment your security software and I recommend you install it:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm

Also, consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002

Consider installing a Personal Firewall program. Even if you are behind a NAT router, I recommend you install firewall software as it will improve the security of your computer by monitoring and controlling outbound connections to the internet as well as inbound. There are various free packages available, I recommend Sunbelt Software's Kerio available from here:
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio

Please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date in the future by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule
Also, check that your antivirus and antispyware programs also automatically update as often as practical.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Find out how to prevent infection in the future
