My IE (version 6.0.2800.1106CO) browser seems to be influenced by one or more hijackers. One symptom is suspicious additional hits in the results of my Google searches. Another symptom is when I enter a URL I get diverted to a webpage which looks like a search directory. Please help. Here's the log produced by a HijackThis scan of my PC.

If an Administrator has not set a policy restricting access to Internet Explorer settings and you have not configured any software such as Spybot SD to prevent changing Internet Explorer settings, then you can also check these two 06 entries:

Remain in Safe Mode. Now, search for, and delete if found, (some files may not be present after previous steps) the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wcfgea.exe

C:\WINDOWS\realtime.exe

C:\WINDOWS\khwzer.exe

c:\windows\temp\msbb.exe

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example:

C:\WINDOWS\Temp\

C:\Temp\

Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select "delete all offline content."

Empty your Recycle Bin.

Reboot into normal mode.

Proceed to the Windows Update site (see link below) download and install ALL critical updates.

Reboot when finished.

If you are not running version 1.3 of Spybot S & D, click here to download Spybot Search & Destroy v1.3 - install, update, reboot into Safe Mode, scan and fix all RED checked items it finds. Reboot into normal mode when done.

Perform a custom Ad-aware scan in Safe Mode……..

If you do not have the latest version of Ad-aware SE Personal, Build 1.03, click here to download Ad-Aware and install. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Then boot into Safe Mode, start the program, and click the gear wheel at the top and check these options to configure Ad-aware for a customized scan:

Under "General Settings" all available options should be selected.

Click the "Scanning" button.
Under "Drives, Folders and Files," select "Scan within Archives".
Click "Drives and folders to scan" and select your installed hard drives.
Under "Memory & Registry," select all options.

Click the "Advanced" button.
Under "Logfile detail level," select all options.

Click the "Tweak" button.
Under "Scanning Engine," select the following:
"Unload recognized processes during scanning."
Under "Cleaning Engine," select the following:
"Always try to unload modules before deletion."
"During removal unload Explorer and IE if necessary."
"Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."
Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.

Run the Ad-Aware scan, making sure that the mode selected is "Use custom scanning options."

When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next." The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?" Reboot into normal mode when finished.

Next, perform online virus and Trojan scans, using the links in my signature below. Allow the programs to delete all that they may find. Reboot after each scan.

Scan with HijackThis and post a fresh log into this same thread.
Thanks very much for helping me. I did all that you suggested. Quite a few evildoers were found and destroyed. Here's the current HijackThis log:

Hello,

You're very welcome. :)

Your log looks clean now except for one minor thing. Fix the following entry with HijackTHis by placing a check mark next to the entry then, with all other windows closed, select "fix checked."

Here's a few tips to help you keep your system clean in the future….

Download IE-SPYAD here: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

It will place over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so that you don't accidentally visit innocent appearing sites that aren't really innocent.

There's also a small program, called RegistryProt that will warn you when a program attempts to make changes to your registry and will ask you if you want to allow the change. You'll find it here, under "freeware": http://www.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=products

Make sure you keep your system updated by frequent visits to the Windows Update site (see link below). Always install ALL critical updates.

Please take a minute or two to read the short article, "How did I get infected in the first place?" (See link in my signature below). You will find good information on keeping your system clean in the future, as well as links for excellent free anti-spyware tools.
More thanks. I will do everything you suggested. I am very impressed by your competence in this and the clear and concise manner in which you instruct sinners like myself on how to cleanse our PCs.
