Hi! I have pretty good computer skills and wish to learn more. Not dumb (pilot, diver r&d supervisor) use a computer everyday at work. Have dell at home with about:blank problem. Have been reading forms a lot. Questions: 1. is the help provided here fairly fast and easy to find? 2. would i be better off taking the pc to a store (best buy $49) to fix? I like the idea of solving this myself, but do not want to be a pain to anyone. I could run HJT tonight and post results tomorrow.
Go ahead and post a hijackthis log please. Make sure that it is the latest version 1.98.2 and when you download it extract it to its own folder C:/HJt for example. Then scan with all browser windows closed and post the log by clicking on "add reply" at the bottom right. I am at work at the present time but will track this thread for your response.
Here it is Siggyx, thank you in advance. Dumb question: Can the operating system be removed and re-installed to cure this problem? I know that all info would be lost, but there isn't a whole lot at this point that I want to save. Pretty frustrated.

Hello scottc

There is no need to reformat to remove these infections. There is a hidden dll which is invisible to windows at this time and is responsible for reinstalling the infection each time you reboot. Our approach is to unhide the hidden dll and delete it with several steps in between. It will take a bit of time, but will be fixed.

Step#1

You have the Peper Trojan. It is a very stubborn infection which requires a apecific tool to remove. Please follow these instructions in order:

1. Download Newuninst.exe.

2. Run it with an active internet connection.

3. Reboot to finish removing the entries it found.

4. Run the tool a second time (with an active internet connection).

5. Reboot to finish removing the entries it found.

Step#2

Please download and open the following zip file. Double-click on the file inside the zip and when it asks you if you would like to merge the file into your registry, please answer yes. This will make sure all files are visible on your computer.
http://www.davehigham.zen.co.uk/downloads/xphidden.zip

Step#3

Hello and Welcome to TomCoyote. You have one of the most severe types of infections we are seeing these days and it will take a bit of time to solve your problems. This infection continues to reinstall itself through a hidden dll which we have to find and remove.

1. Please download DllCompare
( The Screenshot will show you how the program will look when it starts.)

2. Start the Program with its default settings and put a check mark in the include subdirectories. Click the Run Locate.com and wait until the scan says complete.

3. Click the Compare button to start the next process.

4. Files in the upper portion have been verified to "exist", Files in the bottom section were not able to be accessed. Very few files should be listed in the bottom section when the Compare scan is complete.

5. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower section to select them. Right-click on the file and use the Option Rescan screenshot.

6. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then it will be removed from the list (to reduce the number of identified files) screenshot

7. Click the Make a Log of what was found button, and post the log here in this thread using Add Reply to receive further instructions.
dgosling, Thank you for the reply. By time time I got home from work on Fri. my wife had re-installed XP with Dells help. I finished installing the rest of the typical software ans SP 2. A few question if I may. 1.Will the re-install get rid of the virus? 2.My wife's business sells Big Planet firewall and scan under the name of Webroot. Are you familiar? I am also running Norton, Sywareblaster and Spywareguard. Will there be conflicts using these together? 3.Last, my daughter downloaded AOL Instant Messenger and later in the evening I clicked on something (I can't remember what) and 68 AOL windows poped up and froze up the pc. I couldn't even do ctrl alt del. I shutdown and restared and everything seems fine. I ran Ad Aware se and Swb, but nothing showed. Thanks for your time and sorry for the delay in responding.
1. I hate to say this but maybe, may be not. It depends on what they did. If they did a full format and reinstall, yes it should be gone. However, if they did a recovery, or restoration of their software which left some of your original files intact, then it will likely still be there. The best way to find out if it is still there is send me a new HijackThis log and download and run DllCompare as this will indicate if there is still a hidden file causing problems. Post both log files and be sure that you are clean 2. The firewall and AV program are legitimate software. I am not familiar with them so I can't comment on how effective they are. There should be no conflicts running both. 3. I have never heard of that happening with AOL instant messenger. It usually is a quite stable program. As I suggested above I think you should post the log files and I will review them to see if there is anything showing that shouldn't be on your pc. I would uninstall AOL instant messenger and have her download it,. (or you download it to make sure) directly from AOL. Good Luck!
dgosling, here is the HJT. I didn't have time to do the dllcompare, will do tonight. Thanks. Dell had wife put in resource cd and type various cmds then reintall op sys.

This log is clean! I suggest you do the DllCompare log too to make sure that all are gone, but it is optional. It appears that they did clean out before restoring the OS but there is one way to tell - do you have any personal files left on the hard drive?

You appear to be well protected but I suggest you clean our your System Restore to make sure any backed up information does not include the infected files. (this is unlikely after the procedure they did but doesn't hurt to be cautious)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Another cleanup that should be done is to go to Start>Programs>Acccessories>System Tools> Disk Cleanup and put a check mark beside all the entries in the disk cleanup window that ask you what you want to clean. Clean all hard drives and all files. This will get rid of any malware that is hiding in the temporary folders.

I think you may benefit from reading the article "How Did I Get Infected In The First Place" linked at the bottom of this post, for information on PC security.
