please help me with this as I will need baby steps,

Hello again pennypark.

I have moved this topic to the Windows forum, as at the moment there is no reason to treat this as a malware issue.

Someone there will be able to help.and if they suspect malware will point you back again.

Hello pennypark and welcome to our forums,

:welcome:

Sorry to hear of the log in problem with your computer, It can seem very daunting when you see that sort of error message, but usually the fix is easy and simply to perform, in fact the problem is so common that Microsoft have provided detailed instructions on how to fix it.

Before I give you the link to the fix I will take the opportunity to give you some general pieces of advice.

1 Check your back ups before you do anything else, make sure they include everything that is important to you on your computer (stuff you don't want to lose) and that you have at least one copy of your back up ( including system images and a full back up of your Registry) validated and kept safe on removable media offsite.

2 The fix involves editing the Registry, this is easy to do, but does need great care and attention and accuracy….. whilst editing the Registry you will be operating outside of the familiar friendly and somewhat protected environment usually provided by Windows……. so if you make a mistake and delete or type something in error then you will NOT get a friendly warning from Windows saying "do you really wish to do this?" instead the command will execute…  and if this involves great troubles for your computer, then this is just what will happen!

3 You mentioned that you sometimes find it hard to follow instructions, so if this is the case then read carefully the instructions provided in this link:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/947215/you-receive-a-the-user-profile-service-failed-the-logon-error-message

make notes as appropriate, but before you start to apply the fix, decide if you can follow all the instructions carefully and accurately and that you are confident that you will be able to complete them all properly.

4 If you are not confident then it would be wise to ask a reliable and experienced user (perhaps your son? to assist you)

5 In my workshops when we come accross this issue we usually  take 5 or 10 minutes to fix it, so it is covered by our minimum charge…. I cannot speak for Australian workshops ( I am in the UK) but it should not cost very much to take it in and get it fixed by a competent technician, but if you do decide on this then remember to get a firm quote for the work before you let them proceed ( just to be on the safe side)

6 Just in case you are running Win 10 rather than Win7 here's another link for the fix:

If you need further information or clarification on any of this just let us know
