Hello!  Long time no see! :adios:

I have a Surface Pro 3 running Windows 8.1 running both 64 bit and 32 bit programs (old Photoshop mostly, which I do need).  My Epson XP-520 PSC has started having problems that look like software issues ( no 'preview' window, inability to change sizes, and cropping images), so I finally uninstalled it completely last night.  I plan to reinstall, but before that I did some checking of my system and HijackThis showed a whole bunch of 'missing file' and a whole bunch of other crap that did not look at all familiar, plus when I rebooted the Google Chrome 'use me please!!' popup showed itself.  I do have Chrome on my machine as a backup in case of Firefox trouble, but rarely use it.  Ran Spybot S&D; and got a few things but they're 'fixed', and Avast didn't report any problems when it scanned yesterday other than its usual 'some files could not be scanned' (I have a BitLocked external drive that normally causes that alert).  So I'm at the limit of what I can do without help.  Help?

Here are the logs asked for.  Let me know if you also want the HijackThis one, or other things.  These were run without the mentioned BitLocked drive unlocked, and without the PSC installed.

:welcome:

You have CCleaner installed, its an excellent program for cleaning out temp files , history and unwanted cookies from your browers, i use it myself…but it has an option to clean up your registry which can be a disaster if you remove the wrong entry or entries, lets hope you have not done this.

As far as Hijackthis, its an outdated program thats not used much anymore, those files are not missing its just that Hijackthis could not find them.

Your logs look pretty good, but lets do some general clean up and go from there

All our tools and scanners work more efficiently when run from the DESKTOP in lieu of being buried in some folder, so download and run these tools right from the DESKTOP

  •
  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Scan.
  • After the scan is complete click on "Clean"
  • Confirm each time with Ok.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the content of that logfile with your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

Regarding CCleaner:  I have used it for years, including the registry cleanup.  However, just in the last several months, it has been showing items in the registry, claiming to 'fix' them, but they show back up immediately.  So obviously something's changed.   Anyway…

It seems that Malwarebytes has been updated since the directions were written for it; I had to dig around to find everything instead of straight follow your directions.  Also, had to run it twice, as the first time it crashed upon hitting 'Scan'.

If I'm reading the entries correctly (don't worry, I didn't do anything you didn't ask me to), it looks like much of the trouble came in with Windows updates, like last time. :P

Sorry about the instructions for Malwarebytes, I just updated my version a few days ago and with the holidays I havent gotten around to updating the instructions.  Malwarebytes found Search Protect and Trovi , all those entries need to be quarantined. You may have to run the program again . When MBAM is open go into Setting and way on the bottom make sure Automatic Quarantine is ON

When your done removing those entries post the log and then Right Click on FRST64 and select RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR , checkmark Additions and leave everything else as is, click on SCAN and post both new logs please and lets see if there is anything else to remove

It WAS on by default, for the scan I did before posting the results here.  But it looks like there was an extra step after the scan was done that I didn't see until just now.

Is there any chance that the memory onboard my Epson PSC is also infected?  Currently it is not attached either wired or wirelessly to my computer, tho of course problems with it were the instigator of this investigation.  Also, can you tell me what programs might have installed Trovi and Search protect?

Hello Again

Thanks for the new logs.  I doubt that your Epson Printer is infected, you may want to uninstall it via Programs and Features in the Control Panel and then reinstall it and see if it makes it better

You have Spybot installed and now Malwarebytes, you should uninstall one, your call but I would keep Malwarebytes

As far as Trovi and SeachProtect, its hard to say how it got on your system. Most programs like those come bundled with other software you may have downloaded and installed, its always  best to read the (EULA) End User License Agreement prior to the installation. Sometimes way down on the very bottom it may say BY INSTALLING THIS SOFTWARE YOU GIVE US THE RIGHT TO INSTALL ADDITIONAL SOFTWARE . If you see this then you need to get out of the installation.

Your new FRST logs look fine, no malware that I can see. Are things any better ?

I found another malware in my locked drive and already quarantined it  I also am wondering what you would recommend as far as free protection software - should I keep up with Spybot?  I cannot afford paid programs unfortunately. :(

Also, Thunderbird reported an error when I clicked on a link in an email (known sender), but on the second and subsequent attempts it went through to Firefox just fine.  And it took a long time to get the PSC up and running, but it is functioning properly now!  Including access to the onboard memory, which my computer assigned a drive letter to.

Good Morning

That file that malwarebytes found and quarantined is considered a PUP  (Potentially Unwanted Program)  most of the reviews I have read seem pretty good, it may have been flagged because it has its own search toolbar. But its not a virus .

As far as Malwarebytes, to bad you cant afford it as its one of the better anti malware programs.

Like I said before , CCleaner is a great program as long as you dont fool around cleaning the registry.  If you continue to do that " You will cause damage to your system"  Cleaning the registry will not make your computer run any better, its best to just leave it alone.

FYI

https://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?30113-Registry-Cleaners-not-recommended

You have Avast Free Anti Virus installed, its a decent program so I would keep it.  Microsofts rule is to have just ONE Anti Virus installed, keep it updated and run regular scans, more than one installed is overkill and will hamper system performance.
