My Windows XP computer started giving trouble yesterday. I believe I've been hijacked. Weird messages pop up, and Windows Media Player opened by itself, playing an advertisement for porn. Pop-up bars popped up, prompting me to download "Antivirus scan" things, but I'm betting they're fake. A pop-up in Spanish came on and it looked malicious (an evil smiley face was in it). My Windows Firewall was suddenly turned *off* by itself, even though I didn't do that.

Today things have gotten worse. The screen keeps freezing any time I attempt to do anything: I tried to boot in Safe Mode and the screen froze, I tried to do System Restore in Normal mode but the screen froze when I clicked on the System Restore tab thingy in All Programs > Accessories > System Tools. Now when I turn the computer on, the screen freezes almost instantly.

Everything is also loading slower than it usually does. I can't run SpybotS&D without the screen freezing before I can click on the Scan button.

I'm stuck. Help!

Update: The computer was finally stable enough for me to run a System Restore, so I selected one from two months ago. Things are running OK now. I'm aware spyware can be deep-rooted, though, so I'd still appreciate any assistance. Here's a recent HijackThis log:

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I performed all steps smoothly and successfully.

As for the computer's behavior, I haven't been assaulted with any more pop-ups, WMP ads, or other strange things. The computer actually seems to be running faster than it initially was. :o

Thanks for your help!
1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:
Viewpoint <–All Viewpoint programs listed

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - (no file)

O4 - .DEFAULT User Startup: AutoPlay.exe (User 'Default user')
O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Only one Viewpoint program was in Add/Remove: Viewpoint Media Player. And after I removed it, the entry for "O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe" disappeared from Hijack This, so I didn't have a box to put a checkmark next to.

I notice "O4 - .DEFAULT User Startup: AutoPlay.exe (User 'Default user')" reappeared in the Hijack This log . . . as well as some new O4 entries. Should I be worried about those?

It's a new day and the computer still hasn't given the problems it did in my original post–except for one. This morning when I turned it on, Windows Firewall again mysteriously disabled itself. (this was before i performed the steps you instructed me to do. upon rebooting, i didn't have that problem again)
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [Msn] c:\eq1BA.exe (User 'SYSTEM')

I have no idea where those came from nor what they are.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Note: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
"copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread as well.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
ComboFix was surprisingly fast; took less than 10 minutes. I've included the log as an attachment.

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:
1.Click File;
2.Click Save As… Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save …

[external image: Posted Image]

Drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

Then post the results log and a new HijackThis log.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Er, before I do that, I just realized something. I had undid the part of your first reply to my post, in which you instructed to

"Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK."

Was I supposed to have run ComboFix showing those hidden files and folders? Somehow I got a feeling I should have. Anyway I began running a new ComboFix before I saw this reply, and it's understandably slower than the first time I ran it. Still running. As soon as it finishes, I'll do the steps you instructed in this reply. Or should I post that ComboFix log first?
Got'cha. I'm running into difficulties now. When ComboFix runs, the screen keeps freezing at the part where it says "Preparing Log Report. Do not run any programs until ComboFix has finished" It has frozen twice so far. It's getting late over here, so I'll try again in the morning.
Update: success.
